They've been ignored for decades, but now, drive-in movie theaters are making a huge comeback. It's the only place where large crowds of people can see a movie together, and still maintain a social distance.Usually on vacant lots or in rural areas, the drive-in was hugely popular. Until it wasn't. Fancy theaters took over and many of those sites became a piece of history, the empty lots they sat on often doubling as a swap meet.“It’s been one of the most interesting stories of the pandemic, in terms of the movie business, is that drive-ins, which have been mostly ignored since the 70s and 80s, have become the focal point for theatrical movie going and for people who want to get out of the house and go to the movies, because those are the spaces that are open and I think it will have an impact going forward,” said Ross Melnick, professor of film and media studies at the University of California Santa Barbara.Melnick is also the man behind the website Cinema Treasures. The site provides research on more than 50,000 theaters around the world. “It features memories, comments, data, photographs; it’s a globally crowd-sourced information database in which people can talk about when they worked at theaters, the information they have on them. as well as remembering their history and contemporary function,” he explained. Now, it's a social site. People keeping in touch, remembering their favorite theaters, and their favorite memories. “When you’re home, you’re thinking about what you’re missing, what you used to do--used to go to the restaurant, coffee shop and one of the things they used to do is go to the movies,” Melnick said. The Memphis-based Malco Theatres has been a family business since 1915. There are 36 locations and one drive-in, which recently reopened. Malco called it a "socially distant cinematic success."“It’s selling out. It’s like the glory days,” said David Tashie, president of Malco Theatres. “Cars are piling in. The food is different, there’s walk-up tents and we’re bringing the food, so it’s definitely making a surge, and hopefully it continues when the indoor theaters open."The "glory days" as shown from this newspaper clipping on the cinema treasures site. Malco Theatres have been through a lot through the decades, having to adapt to every technological evolution. “We were the first to integrate theatres,” said Tashie. “We’ve survived Spanish flu, wars.”And now, they've survived a pandemic. “There’s a lot of history here we’re trying to protect and we’re on it, and Hollywood needs to keep delivering movies and we’ll have great places to show them,” he said. The Summer Drive-in is not alone. Melnick says there's been pop-up drive-ins all over the country and world. Some are so full they're turning people away. It's the one place where people can be together, even if they're not. "The longevity of the kind of business it creates a stake in the community there’s this continuum you have this place that and multiple generations have grown up in the area,” Melnick said. “The summer drive-in is this consistent location for rites of passage- childhood, teenage hood or parenthood. You have this consistency.” 3175

TIJUANA, Mexico. There's an unusually high volume of birds in the state right now, and the Department of Natural Resources says spring migration has come to a halt due to the snow. This stop has forced larger crowds to Wisconsin feeders. The DNR counted nearly 300 at bird feeders near La Crosse. Senior ecologist Don Quintenz at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center has seen a higher volume of birds are at the center. If the weather stays like this, he says, birds could be in trouble. "A lot of dead birds," says Quintenz, "Freezing temperatures for a couple days straight, that could be very hard on a population."Amateur Naturalist Judith Huf has studied ornithology for years and says some birds will make sacrifices while others will make due. But she does help them out by keeping her bird feeder full. "Some of them will do a little reverse migration...It's a little nicer in Illinois. It's not snowing down there and [the birds] can get food...Robins have been coming to eat bird seed out of the feeder. They don't normally eat bird seed, that's not normal behavior for a robin," said Huf. DNR says this weather creates a lose-lose situation for the birds. Since their food is either buried in the snow or frozen solid, especially tree sap or insects, scavenging is difficult.Additionally, the birds can't go elsewhere to find food because the frigid cold is blocking the warm northbound currents. Setting out raisins, shelled peanuts, and mealworms can go a long way.  1492

Those working from home could soon have the option of moving their home temporarily to the island nation of Barbados.According to the Barbados Government Information Service, the country is working on a 12-month “Welcome Stamp” that would allow “persons to come and work from here overseas, digitally so, so that persons don’t need to remain in the countries in which they are.” Prime Minister Mia Amor Mattley said the concept is being refined right now.Barbados is an island on the southeastern side of the Caribbean.“But in order for those things (long-term travel to and from Europe or the U.S.) to truly resonate, what does it mean? It means that what we offer has to be world-class and what we continue to offer is world-class,” Mottley said. The prime minister also called on those living in Barbados to help by doing their part during the pandemic. “If the first tourist is a Bajan, then they must equally, also be the first promoter and the first protector,” she is quoted as saying.Barbados has reported 103 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic started, and seven deaths from the virus. The island has a population of just under 300,000.Her comments came during a reopening of a restaurant in St. Lawrence Gap on the south side of Barbados.Curfew restrictions in Barbados were lifted in July, and beaches and parks do not have limited hours. Social gatherings are limited to 500 people and social distancing is required in public.According to the U.S. embassy in Barbados, flights to the island resume over the next few weeks depending on the airline. Health screening and wearing masks is required at the airport, and a COVID-19 test will be done upon entry with some travelers being monitored for symptoms for up to 14 days. 1743
