SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Two former Cambodian refugees facing deportation for crimes committed as young adults were among seven people granted clemency Monday by California Gov. Gavin Newsom in his first pardons since taking office in January.Newsom pardoned Kang Hen, of San Jose, who pleaded guilty to being the getaway driver during an attempted armed robbery in 1994. Hen, who was brought to the U.S. when he was 9, surrendered to immigration authorities April 1 after he was notified he was wanted for deportation. The governor, a Democrat, also issued a pardon for Hay Hov, of Oakland, who was convicted of solicitation to commit murder and participation in a street gang in 2001.Hov, a naturalized citizen, was taken into custody by immigration officials in March. Both men immigrated to the U.S. lawfully as children. They petitioned Newsom for pardons, saying they have moved past their troubled youth to become respectable men with jobs and families.Pardons don't automatically halt deportation proceedings, but they eliminate the criminal conviction judges often base their decisions on, according to the governor's office. In Hen's case, a pardon may eventually allow him to stay in the U.S. Hov, whose green card was recently re-instated by a judge, is no longer at risk of deportation."Both men have young children, are the primary income provider for their families, and provide care to relatives living with chronic health conditions," the governor's office said in a statement. "Their deportation would be an unjust collateral consequence that would harm their families and communities."The pardons are a rebuke to President Donald Trump's administration, which has cracked down on immigrants who committed crimes. Since Trump took office, a large number of people have been detained and deported to Cambodia, according to advocates.Newsom's predecessor, Gov. Jerry Brown, pardoned five Cambodian refugees who faced deportation last year.Newsom on Monday also pardoned five other people who had convictions more than 15 years old — including business owners, students and at least one grandparent, the governor's office said. Their crimes ranged from forgery to drug-related offenses.None of those pardoned had multiple felonies and all had completed their sentences, Newsom's office said.Newsom's highest profile use of his clemency powers came in March, when he placed a moratorium on executions for the 737 people on California's death row. His action temporarily halted the death penalty in the state. 2528
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A spokesman says one of California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s children may have been exposed to the coronavirus at school and is in quarantine. Nathan Click says the child began a 14-day quarantine after the family was told a classmate at the private school in Sacramento had tested positive for COVID-19. He says the family is following state protocols, and the governor, his wife and four children have all tested negative for the virus. Newsom said last month that his children had returned to their school, sparking criticism even as millions of public schoolchildren continue to study through distance learning. 643

Right after the mass shooting at a Florida high school earlier this year, Dick's Sporting Goods decided to stop selling assault-style weapons at its stores. Now the nation's largest sporting goods retailer is going to destroy those guns."We are in the process of destroying all firearms and accessories that are no longer for sale as a result of our February 28th policy change," the company told CNN."We are destroying the firearms in accordance with federal guidelines and regulations."A company spokesman wouldn't say how the guns would be destroyed.Dick's was one of a number of retailers that made changes to their gun sales policy after the February 14 massacre at Marjory Stonemen High School that killed 17 students and staff.Around the same time, Walmart said it would also raise the age restriction for purchase of firearms and ammunition to 21. It also removed items from its website that resembled assault-style rifles, "including nonlethal airsoft guns and toys."L.L. Bean and Kroger (which sells guns through its Fred Meyer stores) both raised their minimum gun buying age to 21.Dick's CEO Edward Stack said he and other company executives were moved by the Parkland school shooting survivor's push for gun control measures. And he said the company was alarmed after learning that school shooter Nikolas Cruz had bought a gun at Dick's, although not the AR-15-style rifle used in the February 14 massacre."We don't want to be a part of this story any longer," he told CNN's New Day back in February. 1530
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California has elected its youngest state lawmaker in more than eight decades. It elevated a 25-year-old progressive Democrat who already has years of legislative experience to the state Assembly. Alex Lee survived a crowded nine-candidate primary election in March, then trounced his Republican rival in a San Francisco Bay Area district that includes part of Silicon Valley. He plans to keep living with his mom in San Jose for the time being and had to take a part-time gig economy delivery job to make ends meet during his campaign. Lee has worked for five different lawmakers either as a college intern or more recently a paid aide. 671
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Police say a man who was suspected of burglarizing a vehicle was fatally hit by another car as he fled the Southern California scene. The 35-year-old man allegedly stole property from a car in Riverside, California, around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. The man's name has not been released. Authorities say the vehicle’s owner confronted the man, who ran away while discarding the items from the car. As he fled, the man tripped and fell into the path of a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. Police say the Outlander struck the man, who later died at a hospital. The Outlander’s driver was not injured and is cooperating with police. 648
