WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — One year after killing 51 worshipers at two Christchurch mosques, an Australian white supremacist accused of the slaughter has changed his plea to guilty. Twenty-nine-year-old Brenton Harrison Tarrant on Thursday pleaded guilty to 51 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder and one count of terrorism. The killing spree was the deadliest in New Zealand's modern history and prompted the government to rush through new laws banning most semi-automatic weapons. Tarrant was scheduled to go to trial on the charges in June. His change in plea came as a surprise and relief to survivors and relatives. 648

Two uniformed police officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were denied service Thursday night at The Lodge at Cactus near Cactus Avenue and Southern Highlands Parkway.A post about the incident has received a lot of attention on social media. The graveyard police officers had gone into the restaurant for food and the bartender reportedly told them that the restaurant did not serve "you guys" anymore. The police union sent its membership a letter earlier today that called the incident disgusting and offensive. There was an incident and The Lodge has since apologized. The director of operations for The Lodge says they welcome all first responders and have been serving them for 30 years. The union says that it accepts the apology and believes it was an isolated incident involving one employee. LVMPD also sent the following statement to the media:An incident occurred on February 13, 2020 where two on-duty LVMPD officers were refused service at The Lodge bar/restaurant when they stopped for lunch. While we consider this behavior unacceptable, we firmly believe that the refusal was an employee acting solely on his own, and it does not represent the viewpoint of the establishment. According to management at The Lodge it welcomes law enforcement at its business. The involved employee has now been suspended from work. The LVMPD has worked hard establishing relationships with its’ business partners in the community and the presence of officers is welcomed by business owners.NEW: 1523

Two top Illinois GOP officials are condemning a meme recently posted to the Facebook page of the Illinois Republican County Chairmen's Association that depicted four minority congresswomen as being "THE JIHAD SQUAD."The image, which has since been taken down from the group's page, is modeled after an action movie poster and edited to include the four lawmakers' faces on the bodies of various characters. The women in the photo are Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. The image includes the words "THE JIHAD SQUAD" below the names along with the words "POLITICAL JIHAD IS THEIR GAME" and "IF YOU DON'T AGREE WITH THEIR SOCIALIST IDEOLOGY, YOU'RE RACIST."The meme also includes the association's logo. It's unclear who in the party posted the image, or if those responsible have been admonished.President Donald Trump has recently criticized the four women, known as "the Squad," in racist terms as part of an effort to define the Democratic Party as far-left. Omar and Tlaib are the first two Muslim women in Congress, and Ocasio-Cortez identifies as a Democratic socialist.CNN has reached out to the offices of the four lawmakers for comment.A 1267

U.S. gasoline prices are becoming a real pain for motorists, particularly in the west.A survey of more than 5,000 gas stations conducted by AAA shows that the average price for a gallon of regular gas is now .75, up 11% in the last month. And the average price is already above a gallon in six western states: California, Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Alaska.Four-dollar gas is the average in a couple of California counties. Many others are within a few cents of that mark, including San Francisco, where the average price is .98. The statewide average in California is up 20 cents a gallon, or 5%, to .83 in just the last week. The Midwest has also been hit by price spikes. The average price in Chicago has jumped 46 cents a gallon, or 16%, to .27 in the last month.Unplanned refinery maintenance at several locations is responsible for the sudden, and uneven, increases across the nation, said Tom Kloza, head of energy analysis for the Oil Price Information Service. Western states are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions because they have less refining capacity than other locations across the United States."The western half of the country hasn't added any refining capacity this century," said Kloza. "It's been a cluster of difficulties but not disasters hurting supplies, particularly out in the West."Kloza said -a-gallon gas will be common in California and perhaps in some other western states in the coming weeks. But most of the country could start to see some relief in gas prices soon as refineries along the Gulf Coast start to come back online from scheduled maintenance in the coming weeks. 1653
