SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A sea lion pup in Encinitas was saved Tuesday from a diver's mask that was tightly wrapped around its neck.The year-old sea lion pup was found at Swami's Beach with a diver's mask wrapped around its neck. The sea lion, which only weighed about 32 pounds, appeared malnourished and dehydrated, according to SeaWorld rescue team members.The mask had been wrapped around the sea lion's neck for weeks, preventing the pup from foraging and eating.RELATED: Sea lion lies down in front of San Diego hotel's sign, refuses to budgeHad the mask remained on the pup, the animal would likely have eventually starved to death or been strangled by the mask, crews said.Rescue team members cut the mask off the sea lion, but found that a wound caused by the mask had become infected. Crews took the pup to SeaWorld’s Animal Health and Rescue Center, where officials treated the sea lion's wound.Officials say other than the wound and undernourishment, the sea lion was in good health. They hope to release the pup back into the wild in the next few months after rehabilitation. 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman's trip to Mission Bay ended with her, and her car, soaked.The woman, who identified herself as Candy, said she was next to her car on a boat ramp preparing to unload her kayak for a day of fishing and roaming around Mission Bay. Suddenly, her 2002 Audi convertible started rolling as she was unloading gear.Candy jumped into the car and road it into the bay as she tried to get her emergency brake to engage."It just wouldn't. It just kept on going," Candy told 10News. "I was standing straight up in it as it was going down ... quite a scene, I'm sure."The car started sinking into the bay with Candy still inside, before she jumped out to swim back to shore. Her lunch and kayak floated to the other side of the bay as her car became completely submerged, she told 10News."I'm going to have plenty of fish now," she joked. "It's not a big deal, things happen."Two tow trucks were able to fish Candy's vehicle out of the bay and San Diego Lifeguards retrieved her car and kayak, in which she had left her purse and lunch.Candy said she had just purchased the car in November.San Diego Lifeguards reminded locals to exercise caution while using boat ramps. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- About 500 people turned out for a school safety community forum for the Poway Unified School District Tuesday night. Poway Unified School District put on the event so parents could learn what the district is doing to address and school and student safety.  The district asked parents to send in questions ahead of the forum. The forum, held at the Mt. Carmel High School Performing Arts Center on Carmel Mountain Road (map below).“In recent past couple weeks, San Diego schools have been inundated with threats. huge waste- prevent learn- gotten discussion and discourse going where school safety is once again a priority in terms of discussion for this community,” Christine Park, with Poway Unified told 10News.The mayor and the San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore were also at the forum. Marly Franke sent in several questions about emergency protocols, security cameras on campuses as well as what training is available for teachers and students.“I think this is hopefully the beginning of a more open communication forum,” she said, “I think in the past schools make decisions more unilaterally, and we have to involve the community when it comes to children safety.”RELATED: Timeline shows threats made against San Diego County schoolsThe forum comes on the same day the district launched a hotline for to report school threats and the school district announced it earmarked -million in its new budget for school safety and security.Messages left on the Poway hotline will be monitored around the clock by the Poway Sheriff’s Station. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ahead of the Halloween weekend, San Diego State University is issuing a stay-at-home advisory for all students.The college said following the CDC's discouragement from participating in Halloween or social events where physical distancing cannot be done, as well as San Diego County's recommendation to avoid similar gatherings, a temporary advisory for students will go into effect from Friday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 2, at 6 a.m.Under the advisory, students are encouraged to stay home unless for an essential need.The university says it will continue to enforce the campus' COVID-19 policies against large gatherings off-campus, including recent reports of social events in the College Area that have drawn dozens of students together without physical distancing or mask wearing. Since Aug. 24, nearly 900 notices of alleged violations of the campus' COVID-19 policy have been issued."It takes only one person, even one who is asymptomatic, to create a public health risk. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man whose bike was stolen, decided to track the thief himself. But instead of turning him in, he turned the situation into something positive. Rob Greenfield never thought he'd see his bamboo bike again. “I didn’t lock it because I was sitting 20 feet from it and then I heard a noise and I looked back and saw the guy speeding off into the night with it.” When he found the thief, he didn't turn him in. He pulled him in for a hug, forgave him and took his bike back.  “It’s one of a kind bamboo bike but really what makes it special is that I’ve biked across the United States on it doing good deeds," he said. "So I’ve traveled thousands of miles across the country.” The theft made him want to do more good deeds, right here in San Diego. “I decided that rather than turning that into a really negative situation I would turn it into a positive situation," he said. "Knowing the feeling of having a bike stolen I decided I wanted to give bikes to kids who have had their bikes stolen and can’t afford a new one.” Greenfield started a GoFundMe to raise money for bikes. Bikes that he would then donate to the Boys and Girls Club - to kids whose bikes were stolen. He says it's a lesson in kindness that he hopes the thief who took his bike, and the kids who were given bikes, will pass on.“I can crowd out the bad with lots of good. So one bike stolen so I can give away 10 bikes, he said. "In that way it just wipes that bad deed out.”Rob gave away 10 bikes Tuesday and says that there is enough left for him to do it again.  1614
