Dozens of children in South Georgia were potentially exposed to COVID-19 at a Christmas celebration last week after it was later discovered that Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus had tested positive for the virus.Long County, Georgia — a county located about an hour west of Savannah — hosted its annual Christmas parade last Thursday which included a tree lighting and a photo opp with Santa. At the time, Santa and Mrs. Claus were not exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. However, two days later, both learned they had tested positive for the virus.Both WSAV-TV and WJCL-TV in Savannah both report that as many as 50 children took their photos with Santa last Thursday. It's unclear if either were wearing masks at the time of the photo op.Rob Parker, the Chairman of the Long County Board of Commissioners, says that while the event was not organized by the county, he does not regret that it took place.“While this event was not put on by the City of Ludowici or the Long County Board of Commissioners, it was well attended by our public officials and I believe I speak for the majority of them in saying that we still stand by the decision of the Chamber to move forward with these holiday traditions, and to bring some sense of normalcy to these trying times,” Parker said, according to WSAV.Parker added that Santa and Mrs. Claus would "never knowingly" have participated if they knew they had the virus.“They have both filled these roles for many years, and bringing joy to children during the holidays is one of the most important parts of their lives,” Parker said.The Long County School District has asked that children who may have been exposed to the virus to stay home until after winter break, and has already instituted an option "learn-at-home" option due to the increase in quarantined students. 1810

EL CAJON (KGTV): It's become as much a back-to-school tradition as new pencils and notebooks; new buildings and construction at Grossmont Union High School District campuses."We're bringing everything up," says Mount Miguel Principal Jake Gaier. "These students will walk in the door and have access to things that we just haven't had access to before."His school is set to open a new Student Services Center, where state of the art facilities await students and parents as they register for class or meet with guidance counselors. They're also getting a new public events center and turning the old administration building into a STEM complex.The work at Mount Miguel is part of 9 million worth of upgrades that have been underway in the district since 2004. Since then, a trio of voter-approved bonds has helped GUHSD upgrade their aging campuses, some of which date back to the 1950s.In 2004, Proposition H gave the district 4 million. Proposition U in 2008 added another 7 million. And Measure BB in 2016 gave the district 8 million. To date, the district has spent 1 million of that money.Every school has benefited from the bonds, with some campuses getting work done on every single building.At Santana High School, a new PE building will open this spring. They also renovated STEM labs, giving their award-winning robotics program its own space, and adding an observation balcony for visitors to watch the kids work without disrupting them.Principal Tim Schwuchow requires that every student join an extracurricular activity. He says the new facilities reinforce the connection between academics and electives."The kids will really feel they're valued and their extracurricular activities are important to the school," he says.Granite Hills is also getting a new PE Building. It will be combined with a new Food Services building."We serve 700 meals a day," says Principal Mike Fowler. "The kitchen we use was built in 1960. It's too slow."Construction crews started pouring the concrete foundation earlier this month. Fowler says the new facility will be a game changer for his students, allowing the building to keep pace with changing curriculum.It can also be used in case of emergency as a community evacuation center.Those three schools have been the focus on construction this summer. EL CAJON (KGTV) -- A motorcyclist who crashed into a parked truck on a residential street in Fletcher Hills has died, El Cajon police said Tuesday.Shortly after the crash, some off-duty nurses rushed to help the critically injured motorcyclist, identified Wednesday as 36-year-old Julian Garcia, allowing emergency crews to rush him to the hospital.Jennifer Lepari said she heard a “loud boom” on Valley Lake Drive near Valley Mill Road around 8:30 p.m. Monday. “It almost shook the house. It was really, really loud,” she said.Lepari and her husband Jerome are both nurses. Jerome quickly used his belt as a tourniquet on the rider’s leg to staunch the bleeding while Jennifer applied pressure and spoke with dispatchers, according to neighbors.“With the amount of blood he lost and the time it took [for emergency crews to arrive], even the cops said [the rider] wouldn’t have lasted if [Jerome] hadn’t done that,” Lepari said.El Cajon police say the motorcyclist struck a parked work truck on Valley Mill Road for unknown reasons. Investigators believe speed may have been a factor but the crash is still under investigation, Lt. Randy Soulard said.A third off-duty nurse who lives around the block also tended to the badly injured rider, neighbors said.“It was awesome to see the people with that sort of medical experience jump in and not hesitate,” said a neighbor named Lisa.Once police arrived, an officer applied a second tourniquet to the rider’s leg, Lt.
