in Colorado on Sunday afternoon. The Larkspur Fire Department said the group of eight people were hiking near the Devils Head Lookout at the summit around 3 p.m. when the lightning strike in Pike National Forest occurred. Ryan Smedra, the incident commander for Jackson 105 Fire Protection District, said the strike hit a rock wall near the hikers and the blast knocked many of them violently to the ground.Five of the hikers affected were able to walk out of the area on their own, the fire department said. They were treated for minor injuries. But a couple of them had burns from the strike, Smedra said. Some of the patients also complained of having tingling sensations. Two other adults required assistance. One of them was transported to the hospital for observation. The eighth victim, an adult woman, suffered critical injuries. She had to be carried down from the trail in a stretcher and was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Officials could not say what type of injuries she sustained. However, Smedra said she did not appear to have burns.Douglas County Search and Rescue said the operation was challenging due to the area's terrain. More than 30 people from multiple agencies were involved in rescue efforts. The lookout tower, established in 1912, is used by the U.S. Forest Service to spot fires. It's accessed by the Devils Head National Recreation Trail. 1394
With the election finally over, Congress is about to get back to work. And for many Americans, the first thing they want to know is whether we will now get a second round of ,200 stimulus checks.Negotiations in Congress stalled as the election approached. In the weeks before Election Day:House Democrats last pushed a .2 trillion package with another round of ,200 per-person checks.White House negotiators offered a slightly smaller .9 trillion stimulus, also with checks. But Senate Republicans countered with a 0 billion "skinny bill" that may not include any checks. We will know more in the coming days.Bonanza for YouTubersBut from the "Doesn't That Stink?" file: the hundreds of YouTube videos that make it seem another stimulus check is on the way imminently. Why so many videos? Simple: Because these videos earn money for the YouTubers who make them.We found multiple videos by the same people, some with hundreds of thousands of views, rehashing the same information over and over.In some cases, it's just a guy in a T-shirt sitting in a tiny apartment. But if "stimulus check" is in the headline, it is guaranteed to get views. The king of YouTube stimulus checks videos is a guy known as "It's Jimmy," who posts stimulus videos, with splashy thumbnail photos, every few days."What's up, guys. This is Jimmy with your second stimulus check update," he said in a recent one. 1399
on their walk to school.Terri Johnson is a substitute crossing guard for Tooele City. This week as the weather has cooled down, she noticed some of the kids walking to school without coats. That’s when she came up with a simple idea to help out.“They’re going to school wrapped in blankets and that’s not enough,” Johnson said. This week she decided to do something about it. She posted on Facebook, asking people to donate coats for the kids.“It was just an idea to post it there and see what would happen; it has just been phenomenal,” Johnson said. She’s already seeing some response from the community, getting several small trash bags full of coats. She said there’s still more kids who need help, and she’s hoping the community will come together for not only the kids in Tooele, but those in other cities too.“I can’t do it by myself, but if you had something in your closet that your kids not wearing anymore, why not help somebody out?" Johnson said.Anyone interested in donating to the cause should 1006
YouTube has suspended monetization on Shane Dawson's three channels indefinitely. The company's action comes after Dawson posted a video titled Taking Accountability, in which he apologizes for his offensive behavior in previous videos uploaded to his channels. In a statement to E.W. Scripps, a YouTube spokesperson said that the company had to take action."We take all allegations seriously and have a responsibility to protect the entire community of creators, viewers, and advertisers from these rare but often damaging situations," the spokesperson said in the statement. "In this case, our review determined that taken in totality, the impact and nature of his previous videos and on- and off-platform behavior warranted action."Dawson said in the apology video that he was sorry for posting videos that he hated."If you've been watching me for a while, then you know that I have done a lot of things in my past that I hate that I wish that I could make it go away that I try to make go away by deleting videos or untagging my Instagram to pretend that those things didn't happen," Dawson said in the 20-minute long YouTube video. "Yes because I apologized for a lot of them, but I'm 31, almost 32, and those apologies suck."Dawson said there was no excuse for him donning blackface in some of his previous videos.“It was wrong and stupid and I put that out onto the internet, as an adult," Dawson said in the video. "That is insane. I am so sorry. I am so sorry to anybody that saw that and also saw that people were lifting me up and saying, 'you're so funny, Shane.' I can't even imagine what it would be like to be Black and see this white guy do blackface."Dawson has over 23 million subscribers on YouTube. 1724
is in jail and being charged with sexual abuse of a minor.Brandon Taulbee pleaded not guilty in Powell County Circuit Court in Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon. Just nine months ago, Taulbee was teaching industrial maintenance to Powell County High School students, until the principal said he resigned. The principal said that he is not able to discuss why Taulbee resigned due to confidentiality. A grand jury recently returned an indictment that reads in that same month, March 2019, Taulbee subjected a child to sexual contact and intentionally abused the child. He pleaded not guilty to both felony charges. In connection to this case, the grand jury also charged Tina Bryant with failure to report child abuse, wanton endangerment and abandoning a child. Both Taulbee and Bryant have the same attorney, which the judge questions, citing a potential conflict of interest. The judge ordered Taulbee to not contact Bryant. Shortly after, he ordered Taulbee to be transferred to the Montgomery County Detention Center.Since the indictment was filed, Taublee was charged with tampering with a witness. The arrest warrant reads that after Taulbee learned he was indicted, he sent a threatening message to a Stanton Police officer who is listed as a witness in his case.Taulbee is due in court for the tampering charge on Friday.Next Wednesday, he returns to Circuit Court for a pre-trial conference concerning the sexual abuse and criminal abuse felony charges. Both Taulbee and Bryant turned down our request for an interview. 1523
