SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Former San Diego City Councilman and Reform California Chairman Carl DeMaio announced his intent Monday to enter the race for the only Republican-held congressional seat in San Diego County. In a statement announcing his candidacy for the 50th Congressional District seat, DeMaio framed the decision to run as one of ``fight or flight.'' He also lambasted the state's Democratic dominance, arguing the state has shifted to the left in an untenable way. ``Too many Californians are fleeing our state because of the extreme socialist agenda being imposed on us by Democrat politicians, but I refuse to flee: I choose to stand and fight,'' DeMaio said. ``In California, voters have mostly only been given two choices: socialists or ineffective cowards.'' The 50th District seat is currently represented by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, who was indicted last August, along with his wife, on five dozen criminal charges, including conspiracy, wire fraud and record falsification, for allegedly misusing campaign funds. Margaret Hunter has since pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with prosecutors. Her husband maintains his innocence. Hunter won a sixth term last November, defeating Democratic candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar with 51.7% of the vote. The path to a seventh term appears more fraught for Hunter, whose trial is slated to begin Sept. 10 in federal court. With rumors of a possible resignation swirling, a cluster of Republican politicians have announced plans to run for the seat in the event Hunter foregoes a run or cannot legally run in 2020. El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, Temecula Mayor Matt Rahn, former Escondido Mayor Sam Abed and former U.S. Navy SEAL Larry Wilske have all joined the race as Republicans. Former Rep. Darrell Issa, who declined a re-election run in the 49th District in 2018, could also join the race. Campa-Najjar, meanwhile, essentially never stopped campaigning after losing last year and is likely to have a war chest prepared for another attempt to flip the seat. ``More than half a dozen Republicans are now eyeing a challenge against me for CA-50,'' the Campa-Najjar campaign said in a statement last Friday. ``This is an internal battle that party elites will have to figure out amongst themselves.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A study released Monday by the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative found that more than one-third of fifth-, seventh- and ninth-graders in public schools around the county are obese or overweight. The study found that 34% of students in the examined grades were overweight or obese during the 2017-2018 school year, using data from the California Department of Education. The county had a lower obesity rate than California's 39% and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention's 2015-2016 national estimate of 40.7% for youth aged 2-19. The study found disparities in obesity among ethnic and economic groups, with 24% of white students classified as obese, compared to 49% for native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander youths and 43% of Hispanic or Latino children. In addition, 42% of students facing disadvantages like homelessness, being in the foster care system, meal scarcity and having parents without a high school diploma were found to be obese or overweight. Only 24% of students who were not deemed socioeconomically disadvantaged were found to be overweight or obese. ``Childhood obesity remains a pervasive challenge, and sadly current rates have not changed much from the previous report released for the 2014-2015 school year,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. ``This indicates a need for new and continued investment in our communities to address the root causes and environments that hinder children's health.'' According to the Childhood Obesity Initiative, students who face challenges like food scarcity are often more likely to face issues with obesity because they don't have easy access to healthier and more affordable food options. Within the county, higher levels of obesity in children roughly correlated with census tracts in which higher levels of the population had an income of 200% of the federal poverty level or less. In addition, school districts with a higher rate of students in the Federal Reduced Price Meals Program tended to have higher rates of overweight or obese students. ``As a nation, we struggle with the idea that a child can be both overweight and not have enough to eat,'' said San Diego Hunger Coalition Executive Director Anahid Brakke. ``But these are two sides of the same coin. Families struggling to make ends meet must often sacrifice buying healthy food for cheaper, nutrient-poor options that are filling but high in calories, fat and sugar.'' The Childhood Obesity Initiative and the YMCA of San Diego County plan to tackle the problem of childhood obesity by promoting the ``5-2-1-0 Every Day!'' campaign, which encourages children to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables, spend fewer than two hours on recreational screen time, be physically active for an hour or more and avoid sugary beverages like soda. All YMCA branches in the county will have free Sept. 14 open houses offering information to families on the campaign and how to combat childhood obesity. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego woman who falsely claimed to have two employees on the payroll of her marketing company in order to obtain a CARES Act loan pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Wednesday.Nikole L. Edwards, 40, the founder of Social Savvy Marketing, admitted to submitting fake tax records and payroll information to receive a loan through the Paycheck Protection Program.The U.S. Attorney's Office said that in April and May, she applied for "tens of thousands of dollars of PPP loans" with three financial institutions, claiming in applications that Social Savvy Marketing had two employees who earned annual salaries of ,000 and ,000, when the company actually had no employees.Edwards provided fake addresses, Social Security numbers and W-2 forms for the nonexistent employees, according to prosecutors, who said that upon being rejected for a loan, she claimed, "This is a lifeline for my employees and my business and we won't survive without it."She was able to obtain a ,583 PPP loan, but will have to repay the entire amount as part of the plea agreement.Edwards entered her plea Tuesday in San Diego federal court and is slated to be sentenced Nov. 18. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities put out a call today for any additional alleged victims of a mortuary services worker accused of looting a recently deceased Spring Valley man's home, carrying away valuables with a gurney and a body bag.Sammy Willie Gates, 49, allegedly ransacked the 60-year-old man's house late on the night of Aug. 31, about 11 hours after deputies conducting a welfare check found the resident dead of natural causes, according to sheriff's officials.On Sept. 2, one of the victim's relatives reported discovering items, including a firearm and safe, missing from the residence, Sgt. Karen Bloch said. Two days later, the family reported that reviews of surveillance camera footage had revealed that the home of the victim, whose name has not been released, had been burglarized.The video clips showed a man -- later identified by investigators as Gates, owner of independently operated Mortuary Transportation Services -- arriving at the man's house in a white utility van, the sergeant said.Gates allegedly entered the home and exited shortly thereafter with two bags filled with stolen property, then returned with a gurney and an empty body bag that he used to haul away more property.On Sept. 9, detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station served a search warrant at Gates' El Cajon-area home, where the deceased man's safe and gun allegedly were recovered, along with 16 additional firearms, many believed to be war relics dating back to the early 1900s.``Two additional safes, multiple personal identifying documents, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books and several thousand dollars in collectable coins were also recovered from Gates' residence,'' the sergeant alleged. ``A gurney and body bags matching (those seen in) the surveillance video (from) the victim's residence were recovered from Gates' white utility van.''Gates was jailed on suspicion of residential burglary and being a felon in possession of a firearm. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - According to a San Diego County prescription drug abuse report released Thursday, local opioid and prescription drug overdose deaths have increased significantly in recent years.The 2020 San Diego County Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force Report Card found that between 2018 and 2019, the number of unintentional fentanyl deaths increased by 64% and prescription drug deaths rose nearly 12%.The report card provides a variety of data to measure the prescription drug misuse problem in the region by looking at multiple factors and data points over the last five years in San Diego County.In 2019, 645 people died of an unintentional overdose caused by prescription and illicit drugs, as well as alcohol.Those include:151 fentanyl deaths compared to the 92 reported the previous year. The number continued to increase in 2020. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid primarily coming from Mexico that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and 25 to 50 times stronger than heroin;275 deaths due to prescription drugs -- opioids and non-opioids -- up from 245 in 2018; and124 heroin deaths, up from the 105 reported the year before.In addition to deaths, the report card tracks additional key indicators of opioid misuse in the region.The report also found 6,162 visits to local emergency rooms in 2018, compared to 6,607 in 2017. Data for last year won't be available until 2021.Additionally, nearly half of adults arrested reported misusing prescription drugs in 2019. One silver lining is that fewer 11th graders reported prescription drug use in 2019 than in 2015.San Diego County funds prevention and treatment services throughout the region.
