President Donald Trump falsely claimed Saturday that the New York Stock Exchange re-opened the day after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in an effort to justify holding a rally on the same day that a mass shooting occurred at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.Speaking at a planned campaign rally in Illinois, Trump said he had weighed whether to cancel his rally as well as a speech at an agricultural convention earlier in the day in Indianapolis, Indiana, but ultimately decided against it, saying such a move would amount to giving the killer an edge. He compared his decision to continue with the rally to reopening the NYSE after the September 11 attacks, something that did not happen."And with what happened early today -- that horrible, horrible attack in Pittsburgh -- I was saying maybe I should cancel both this and that," Trump said, referring to the rally and his earlier appearance at the agricultural convention. "And then I said to myself, I remember Dick Grasso, a friend of mine, great guy. He headed up the New York Stock Exchange on September 11. And the New York Stock Exchange was open the following day. He said -- and what they had to do to open it you wouldn't believe. We won't even talk to you about it. But he got that exchange open." 1273

President Donald Trump refuted a report from The Atlantic on Thursday that claimed he called Sen. John McCain and U.S. soldiers who died fighting for their country "losers" and "suckers."According to The Atlantic, in the days after McCain's death in August 2018, Trump told senior staff members that he did not want to support that "loser's" funeral and became "furious" that flags at the White House had been lowered to half-staff in McCain's honor.McCain spent more than five years in a Vietnamese war camp after his plane was shot down during the Vietnam war. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump responded to criticism from McCain by saying he liked soldiers who "weren't captured."The outlet also reported that Trump made similar comments during a trip to Paris in 2018, when a visit to nearby Aisne-Marne American Cemetery was canceled due to rain. While officials at the time claimed the Secret Service was unable to fly a helicopter due to the weather, senior staff members who were in Paris claim the trip was canceled because Trump believed his hair would be ruined in the rain.Trump also reportedly claimed the cemetery — a memorial site to hundreds of American soldiers who were killed during World War I — was "filled with losers" and "suckers."Much of the reporting was further confirmed in reports by The Washington Post and The Associated Press. In a series of tweets on Thursday evening, Trump denied the accusations, calling them "fake news." He claimed he called for flags at the White House to be flown at half-staff "without hesitation or complaint" following McCain's death."I never called John a loser and swear on whatever, or whoever, I was asked to swear on, that I never called our great fallen soldiers anything other than HEROES," Trump tweeted on Thursday. 1801

President Donald Trump is asking the Supreme Court to put on hold an appeals court ruling that Trump’s accountant must immediately turn over tax records to a New York state prosecutor. The move on Tuesday sets up a decision from the high court that could come before Election Day. The court could allow the immediate enforcement of a subpoena issued by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. or block it temporarily. Even if the court rules against Trump, however, the records would normally not be made public but rather turned over to Vance’s office. This is the second time the records issue has reached the high court.Unlike most presidential candidates, Trump has opted not to release his tax returns to the public. Although details of Trump's taxes have largely been a mystery, a September New York Times report shed some light on Trump's finances. The president reportedly did not pay federal income taxes for 10 out of a period of 15 years. He also reportedly paid 0 in federal taxes in 2016 and 2017, an amount far lower than most would expect for a billionaire real estate mogul. 1106

President Donald Trump has been nominated a third time for the Nobel Peace Prize, this time by a group of Australian lawyers who praised his role in brokering a peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).“What he has done with the Trump Doctrine is that he has decided he would no longer have America involved in endless wars, wars which achieve nothing but the killing of thousands of young Americans and enormous debts imposed on America," Australian legal scholar David Flint told Sky News Australia on Sunday.President Trump was first nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize by a Norwegian Parliament member for his role in the UAE-Israel peace deal early in September. Then, a Swedish Parliament member nominated Trump after he helped secure a deal for normalized economic relations between Serbia and Kosovo. Also this week, former Vice President Joe Biden was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by a member of the British Parliament.“When others have resorted to violent solutions, he has argued that the best force is the force of argument,” Chris Bryant told the Evening Standard. “Because guns can stop a heart but well-placed words can change many hearts, and many hearts can change a world.”The Norwegian Nobel Committee begins accepting nominations in September for the following year. The deadline to submit a nomination is February 1 for the year of the award. Winners are then announced in early October. Both Trump and Biden’s nominations will be considered for the 2021 prize. There is no minimum or maximum number of nominations a person or group needs in order to be considered for the Nobel awards. The Nobel Committee has a 50-year secrecy rule on naming nominees. The group will not release the name of any nominee to the media, to the nominee themselves, or anyone until after 50 years.“In so far as certain names crop up in the advance speculations as to who will be awarded any given year’s Prize, this is either sheer guesswork or information put out by the person or persons behind the nomination,” the committee states on their website.According to Alfred Nobel’s will, the prize recognizes someone who has "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". 2334
