SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The largest employer in the country is waving away a long standing tradition. Walmart is planning to phase out its greeters at more than 1,000 stores across the country. The retail giant says it is moving forward with a new role called “customer host” that is more physically demanding. The hosts will still greet people but must also be able to pass physical exams including lifting a 25-pound box and climbing ladders. Critics say the move targets their elderly and disabled employees, which make up a significant portion of the company’s greeters. “I can’t do that,” said Adam Catlin, who has cerebral palsy and has worked as a Walmart greeter for a decade. Walmart says it is striving to place greeters in other jobs at the company and the title of greeter will be officially eliminated April 26. “I want to keep my job past April 26 because I have made a lot of good friends and a lot of good memories over the years,” added Catlin. Walmart has not said how many greeters will lose their jobs but adds it is, “extending the current 60-day greeter transition period for associates with disabilities while we explore the circumstances and potential accommodations, for each individual, that can be made within each store.” 1252

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city is running behind on a project to restore an iconic bridge that borders Hillcrest and North Park.Now, people in the area are growing frustrated at the construction on the Georgia St. bridge that's causing traffic delays and drivers to use surrounding neighborhoods as shortcuts."Traffic is very very bad because of te bridge, and I have to go around to buy stuff for my shop, and it's taking me longer to get where I want to go," said Milan Misic, who lives in the area and owns the Balboa Perk coffee and antique shop. The city is restoring the 103-year-old bridge so it can withstand an earthquake. The city broke ground on the million project in July 2016, saying it would take a year. But now it won't be finished until next spring.A city spokesman says the delays are because of weather, and unanticipated cobbles and deposits crews discovered in the bridge walls, making drilling more difficult.He added that there is no threat to public safety and it will not raise the cost.You can track the project on the city's website.   1092

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The future of Horton Plaza was teased in a new set of renderings released by the firm that purchased the aging mall.Stockdale Capital Partners purchased Horton Plaza in June 2018 with the aim of revitalizing the center into a mixed-use high-tech office and retail space. Wednesday, the firm gave a glimpse at The Campus at Horton, showing a completely transformed Nordstrom building from a concrete facade into a glass-covered office space. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community is coming together for the family of a San Diego mother of two who died this week while acting as a surrogate for another family.Michelle Reaves was helping a family have children of their own, according to a GoFundMe set up to help her family. It was her second surrogacy for the same family when complications arose and she died while giving birth, the campaign explained.The baby Reaves was carrying survived.Reaves leaves behind two children, Gage and Monroe, and her husband, Chris.The organizer of the GoFundMe campaign is hoping the community will "be there for Michelle’s family like they would for us.""I can’t even begin to imagine what her husband Chris and her two babies are going through so I want to start this page to help raise money for help with the kids, for Chris as they all adjust, funeral services, or anything at all to make it as easy as we can on them," wrote organizer Jaime Herwehe.
