CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista parents who once felt hopeless now feel empowered to care for their children with behavioral challenges. Through the Parent Intervention Program (PIP), parents learn new strategies while their children develop their social-emotional skills and new ways of expressing themselves. PIP is offered free to Chula Vista families through the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD)."We want to do what we can for our families and children when it comes to the whole child, not only cognitively but socially and emotionally," said Rita Palet, the Director of Early Childhood Education Programs for CVESD.Palet says this is now a priority for the district, which is why they're offering the PIP program to families for free."Behaviors take a while to develop, so they do take a while to diminish," said Palet.Through the program, parents meet others dealing with similar struggles. "When you come here it makes you feel safe, I feel safe coming here, even when we had a rough morning getting here, they're so welcoming," said Mina Fagen, who brings her son to the program.Fagen says her son started acting out after changes happened in the family; his sister went to kindergarten and they also had a new baby in the family."I felt overwhelmed, and still at times feel overwhelmed, but this program gives me a safe place to go to," said Fagen.Parents ultimately give back to the program by volunteering their time later as a "payback parent." This means staff members have completed the program with their own child and can support others going through the program. CHICAGO, Illinois (WGN) — Six people were rescued after an elevator suddenly stopped for several hours in the building formerly known as the John Hancock Center.Around 12:30 a.m. local time Friday, the group was leaving the Signature Room and the elevator was near the 95th floor when two cables broke, causing the elevator to stall near the 11th floor of Chicago’s fourth-tallest building.The elevator ride was faster than normal, those on it said. They later learned they fell 84 floors before their rescue, according to a report by The Chicago Tribune.Fire officials said the elevator was in a "blind shaft", which means there were no door openings.At about 3 a.m., firefighters broke through a brick wall in the parking garage to access the elevator and rescue the group, that included a pregnant woman.No one was injured or needed medical treatment.The John Hancock Center is Chicago's fourth-tallest building. 933

(KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is teaming up with local high schools to help beautify one of its most important corridors.Students from High Tech High began painting a mural Tuesday on a business near Broadway and E Street, the first of five new student-painted murals planned along the Broadway corridor this year.Broadway is the highest revenue-producing corridor in the city, said Chula Vista councilmember Jill Galvez, but a 2019 survey by the Institute for Public Strategies highlighted community concerns with graffiti and vandalism. In the survey of 160 businesses along Broadway, more than 70 percent said graffiti and vandalism were a top concern.Galvez challenged high schools to paint city utility boxes last year and says it’s been successful at deterring graffiti.“Artists respect other artists’ work,” she said.“We’ve already seen the delight of people driving by to see beautiful artwork. It brightens your day. This is going to be the first of many projects along Broadway,” she added.In addition to High Tech High, she said Castle Park High School, Chula Vista High School, Hilltop High School and MAAC Community Charter School are working on murals.Two classes of seniors led by art teacher Chelsea Smith. She said students came up with designs then voted on their favorites as a class. Local businesses then voted on the finalists.High Tech High students are covering two sides of Wild Woolly's Saloon, a frequent target for taggers. One side will depict a floral scene, the other will feature beach imagery and a classic car."I think it's great. I hope it puts a stop to the graffiti," said Autumn Hammer, the bar's manager. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A gunman wearing a clown mask robbed a mini-market Saturday, police said.The robbery happened at 1:05 a.m. at an AM/PM convenience store in the 3100 block of Main Street. The suspect entered the store wearing a clown mask, pulled out a gun and demanded cash, beer and cigarettes.The gunman fled the store in an unknown direction.Medics were called to the scene after the clerk complained he was suffering from anxiety because of the robbery, police said. 482

CINCINNATI – Police arrested a Cincinnati woman Tuesday after she left her 7-month-old child in her vehicle while she visited a hair salon, according to court records.Jaimyce McClinton, 37, is charged with one count of endangering a child.An officer found McClinton's baby locked in the vehicle as the temperature outside reached 76 degrees, court records state.The arresting officer noted the “feels like” temperature outside was 84 degrees.Police said the baby was left alone in the locked vehicle for 34 minutes.Court records did not state the baby’s condition or the location of the salon. 611
