TAMPA, Fla. — Air conditioning units may be contributing to the spread of COVID-19, especially in the southern part of the United States, according to a Harvard epidemiologist.Dr. Edward Nardell is a professor in the Departments of Environmental Health and Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He's done in-depth research on how air conditioning units contribute to the spread of airborne infections.Nardell said air conditioning can help airborne viruses spread in three ways.First, people go inside to cool down, when you are much safer outdoors, Nardell said. Now, we're seeing more people indoors because of the high heat and humidity, specifically in the southern states like Florida.The second problem is that air conditioning brings in very little outside air, according to Nardell. While this isn't a major problem inside your own home, it can be especially problematic in corporate settings."It just isn't economically possible to bring in outside air, recirculate it and dehumidify it," he said.Lastly, he said when people are indoors, you're often not spaced out safely as you would be outdoors."You are not socially distanced as much, but you're re-breathing the same air that someone else just exhaled," Nardell said. "We call it rebreathed air fraction, and if someone is infectious, often asymptomatic, you're going to be rebreathing their small particles."Nardell also said air conditioning units can generate air currents that can carry large particles even further, similar to what researchers found contributed to the spread of the novel coronavirus disease in an air-conditioned restaurant in Guangzhou, China, involving three family clusters.On the Department of Homeland Security's website, this tool can be used to estimate how long the virus would be expected to remain stable while airborne.Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending restaurants increasing the distance between tables and improving ventilation.The use of germicidal lamps, a technology that Nardell said is almost 100 years old, has been proven effective in protecting against tuberculosis infection and is already in use in some settings to fight COVID-19.The lamps are set up to shine horizontally, high in the room where sterilization is needed. TEMECULA, Calif. (KGTV) - U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a man Sunday on suspicion of smuggling more than 143 pounds of methamphetamine on Interstate 15 in Temecula. Agents pulled over the Ford F-150 near the Border Patrol checkpoint at 9:15 p.m. A K-9 unit alerted agents during an exterior search. A secondary inspection led to the discovery of 33 bundles of meth inside the wood paneling, officials said. The drugs had an estimated street value of 0,640. TAMPA, Fla. — George Streets, Jr., is just 10-years-old and he’s somewhat of a boxing phenom.“When I was little, I always wanted to box,” George, Jr. said.His trainer Malcolm Peck has been working with George for about a year.“The determination, the way he processes things, the energy he has is different,” Peck said. “It’s definitely different.”When George was a 2-year-old, he would walk around the house punching everything in his path.“T trained by punching the couch,” he said. “My dad would be asking me what I was doing. I’d be ‘ha, ha, ha, ha’ punching the couch.”“He punched a hole in the side of that couch,” his father George, Sr. added.And, that’s how he got the nickname — Lil Savage. He’s mildly autistic and diagnosed with an extreme case of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Boxing has improved his focus.“Boxing allows you to utilize that energy, stay focused, if you’re not focused and you look to your left or right, you’re going to get hit in the face,” George, Sr. said. “It’s going to hurt pretty bad."“It helps him with his attention span tremendously. His grades have improved. He went from being a D-F student to an A-B student.”Lil Savage trains for about four hours each day. He wakes up a 5 a.m. for conditioning drills and goes to the boxing gym after school.The hardest part for him getting into the ring was finding a trainer willing to work with such a young boxer.“No one wanted to train me because I was a little kid,” George, Jr. said. “But when I showed them I could spar, then they really wanted to train me.”He knows the stakes are high with gloves on in the ring, and he wants to be on top.“My goal is to be the best boxer and be myself.”You can see Lil Savage in action later this month.
