(KGTV) -- If there’s a dangerous situation unfolding in San Diego the odds are crews with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department are on-scene.Team 10 discovered the number of responses crews make across the City of San Diego are up by tens of thousands from just a few years ago."What used to be a busy station, looking at nine to 10 calls a day, now that's an average station,” said Chris Webber assistant chief over emergency operations. “A busy station is 15, 17, or more calls in a day.”Webber’s been with the department for more than two decades."The things that have changed, the complexity of the calls the quantity of calls and the technical expertise that it takes to manage the calls,” he said.With San Diego's booming downtown area, Team 10 wanted to know just how busy emergency crews are.Team 10 looked at the number of San Diego Fire-Rescue department's responses dating back to 2014.Across the city, responses are up by thousands.In 2014 the numbers showed 153,110 responses across the city. In 2018 that number was up to 175,147. Total responses are down from 2017, but still show a significant increase from just a few years ago.According to the numbers, the stations with the most responses are in the downtown, Lincoln Park and Valencia Park areas. Although, fire crew members say you can’t discount the number of responses made in the South Bay and Center City areas.“EMS calls are the biggest load,” Webber said. “We're running 82 to 85 percent of the calls are EMS."Here's the proof, station four which serves the East Village and its surrounding areas had more than 6,000 responses for medical calls last year. 1657

SAN DIEGO, California — One year ago, life forever changed for Navy EOD technician Kenton Stacy and his family.He was in a Syrian hospital clearing IEDs when one exploded, leaving him with a two percent chance of survival. His comrades fought to save his life and did, but Kenton was left paralyzed and unable to talk.He's now receiving care at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla.“We’re all ready for him to come home, it's just been hard juggling being here, being with the kids," said Lindsey Stacy, Kenton's wife.The couple has four children, one with special needs.As they work through Kenton's recovery, the family was hit with yet another unexpected hardship.They've been renting their Chesapeake, VA home for the last two years, not realizing tenants were destroying the house.The carpet and blinds were destroyed as well as much of the hardwood floors. The tenants also smoked cigarettes in the home."I just couldn't believe that people would destroy someone else’s property like that, shocking and it hurt,” said Lindsey.She shared what happened on their Facebook page #StacyStrong.It didn't take long for the community to step up and help make it right, with members of the EOD community spending hours to repair the house.Real estate agent Julie Fish, wife of an EOD tech, also stepped up to help.She's going to help sell the house without taking a commission and has enlisted help for labor and needed repairs. "The EOD community, they really have made it that they're taking care of it and it's one less thing I have to worry about," said Lindsey. A new study by GasBuddy claims the Golden State also has some of the most aggressive drivers.According to the study, California ranks number one for most aggressive drivers followed by Connecticut and Georgia.The study claims those aggressive habits are also costing Californians cold hard cash. GasBuddy reported aggressive driving habits costs an additional 7 per year in fuel.The habits include hard braking, speeding and rapid acceleration.Further findings indicate that the more heavily populated the city, the more motorists drive aggressively.Check out the chart below:  709

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- One person is confirmed dead after two boats collided nine miles offshore from Imperial Beach. Fishermen on the “Prowler” were on their way back from Mexican Waters when their boat collided with a mega-yacht, the "Attessa IV" Friday night. One of the survivors on the Prowler spoke exclusively with 10News about his experience. It was supposed to be a fun overnight fishing trip for father-son duo Hung and Ken Ngo. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— In the wake of two serious e-scooter accidents over the weekend, San Diego city leaders are working to update e-scooter regulations. While the scooters are off-limits on all city sidewalks, they are allowed on beach boardwalks. While some believe they are instrumental in freeing up car traffic and parking, others believe scooters just bring the congestion straight onto the boardwalks.Chase McKenna enjoys riding e-scooters at Pacific Beach. He says it is the best way to enjoy the boardwalk."Cruise around the strip right here and that's fun,” McKenna said. “They're convenient because down here, they're everywhere."But what is fun and convenient for McKenna, is a total nightmare for Paul Thackery."PB's great. The scooters are out of control,” Thackery said. He says some areas along the boardwalk are beginning to look like a scooter graveyard. He has also been hit by several intoxicated scooterists in the last several months. "I can't stand them. I ride my bike down here every day, and scooters are in the way, it's dangerous,” Thackery said. “I think they should get rid of them all together. "This weekend alone, at least two e-scooterists in San Diego were sent to the hospital for severe injuries. San Diego Police said a 39-year-old man fell off a scooter just before 10 pm Saturday in Mission Beach. He suffered life-threatening head injuries. Then at 12:30 am Sunday, just a mile away, a 62-year-old man lost control of his scooter, and crashed into a sidewalk. He suffered a neck fracture and facial abrasions.Since February 2018, two people in San Diego County have even died in scooter crashes. The city of San Diego is now defending against four e-scooter lawsuits that claim the city needed to enforce stronger regulations to prevent collisions and accidents.But in a crowded place like a boardwalk, McKenna says scooters are not the only issue."A person on their bicycle can be just as inconsiderate,” McKenna said. That is why McKenna says it is vital that each rider regulates themselves. We met Tracy Grimmett, a visitor from Modesto, doing a few practice laps before taking off for the first time. “Yes, without running into all the people around here. Yes, trying!” she laughed. She hopes to have fun while being considerate, as they share the busy boardwalk with thousands of weekenders."Be courteous around people, go slow,” McKenna said. “If there's a lot of people, you have to slow down, and you have to give other people the right of way."The city of San Diego is now considering making companies install “geo-fencing” on the scooters. That would automatically slow down the maximum speed of the scooters to 8mph in designated zones, including Mission Beach and Pacific Beach boardwalks. 2750
