(KGTV) - When it comes to lifting up someone in need and changing lives, it only takes one person to make a difference. Owning a busy auto repair shop in Vista isn’t enough for TJ Crossman. Life hasn’t always been easy for him as a cancer survivor, widower and single dad. Four years ago, Crossman discovered ‘Wheels to Prosper’, a nationwide collective of independently owned auto shops that fix up cars and give them away to people in need. Crossman put out the word on social media and applications came pouring in. “I’ve heard about people with cancer, elderly, homeless and want to live in the car,” Crossman said. Applications came pouring in. “It catches on; it’s infectious,” said Crossman. Last year a car was awarded to 19-year-old Matthew Haynes, a heart transplant recipient who spent months in the hospital. “When I learned i won, it was overwhelming. It was great,” said Haynes. “I loved the stereo, the trunk, the seats; I love the whole car.” Two years ago the Tapia family was selected. Their daughter has a rare genetic disorder and needs to be driven to Rady Children’s Hospital on a regular basis. The family car had broken down and ignited on the side of the road. “When we were blessed with this it was an amazing feeling. I know I broke down and cried,” said Michelle Tapia. Haynes and Tapia are grateful to Crossman, who they describe as thoughtful and caring. “It’s just a blessing that a guy like him is around to give reassurance to those who have lost hope,” said Haynes. 1507

(KGTV) - There is a hit-and-run crash every minute in the United States, according to a new report from the American Automobile Association.And in 2016, a record 2,049 people died in one of them - mainly bicyclists and pedestrians. The figure is a 60 percent increase since 2009, according to AAA."Whether you're a bicyclist or a pedestrian, and a vehicle comes out of nowhere and you're involved in an incident with it, and then for the driver to take off. It's not only frustrating, it's very sad that people will do this," said Doug Shupe, a spokesman for the AAA. RELATED: California has the most aggressive drivers, study saysThe Auto Club is once again calling for drivers to be alert on the road - especially with distractions and more people out during the summer months.Hit-and-runs range from fender benders in a parking lot to fatal crashes. The penalties for not stopping are stiff. In California, drivers who don't pull over to report property damage face up to six months in jail and a one thousand dollar fine. And it goes up from there. Shupe warned that it's hard to get away these days with so many smartphones and surveillance cameras around. (KGTV) -  The safety driver behind the wheel of an autonomous Uber vehicle that struck and killed a woman in Arizona is a convicted felon, according to ABC affiliate KABC.The driver, identified as 44-year-old Rafael Vasquez, was in the self-driving car when it fatally hit 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she crossed an unlit Tempe, Ariz., roadway outside of a crosswalk with her bicycle.Court documents showed someone with the same name and birthdate served more than four years for two felony convictions: One for making false statement when obtaining unemployment benefits and the other for armed robbery, according to KABC.RELATED: Police release video after Uber self-driving car hits, kills womanWhile the crash has raised concerns over Uber's driver screening policy, the company states "everyone deserves a fair chance" in regards to employing those with a criminal record.Uber said Vasquez met the company's hiring requirements, KABC reported.
