SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Air & Space Museum will hold an induction ceremony for its Air & Space Hall of Fame 2019 class Saturday, which includes Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos.In addition to Bezos, the 2019 class includes former Lockheed Martin Corporation Chairman Vance Coffman, MedAire founder Joan Sullivan Garrett, Apollo 12 command module pilot Dick Gordon, D-Day Pathfinder pilot Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's Air Pollution Control District selected projects from 49 organizations Wednesday to receive .3 million in grants for projects designed to keep 692 tons of greenhouse gas and pollution out of the skies.The grants, part of the county's Clean Air for All campaign, will reimburse the selected businesses, local governments, schools and utilities for swapping out high-polluting, heavy-duty equipment for low-polluting or zero- polluting vehicles, boats and machinery.The district has notified all the organizations that their projects have been selected to receive the grants funded by California's Air Resources Board and Department of Motor Vehicles.All the organizations must sign contracts to start their projects; seven of the projects must still receive final approval from the California Air Resources Board. The organizations are reimbursed once their projects are completed.District officials estimate that if all 138 selected projects are completed they would improve local air quality over their lifetime by preventing the emission of 562.5 tons of nitrogen engine emissions, 103.5 tons of reactive organic gases that affect ozone production and 26.1 tons of diesel particulate matter -- small particles of carbon like soot. All told, the weight is roughly equal to six space shuttles.The majority of the grant money, roughly .3 million, is targeted to help the county's portside environmental justice neighborhood communities and projects from other state-designated disadvantaged communities. Those include the portside communities of Barrio Logan, Logan Heights, Sherman Heights and western National City as well as El Cajon and San Ysidro.The state Air Resources Board selected those portside neighborhoods as part of its Community Air Protection Program. That program provides special funding for neighborhoods that are disproportionately harmed by air pollution because they're near ports, shipping, freeways, rail yards, freight, warehouses and industries. The board created its program in response to California's 2017 passage of Assembly Bill 617, which aimed to help local communities threatened the most by air pollution.Some of the selected portside and disadvantaged communities' projects include truck, school bus, port equipment and marine replacements.The remaining money comes from a mixture of state air quality improvement funds and will primarily be spent to upgrade off-road vehicles, agricultural equipment and marine equipment for 36 organizations. 2530

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved spending million in federal pandemic-related funding to help child care providers, testing in schools and meals for senior citizens.The board directed million to child care providers, who have been struggling to stay afloat since March, in the form of grants.The county will also spend .8 million on senior food programs -- including an expanded Great Plates program that involves prepared meals delivered to the elderly -- while also supporting participating restaurants.The board voted to spend million to support the county Department of Public Health's testing, tracing and treatment strategy dedicated for kindergarten through 12th-grade schools.Last month, the board directed the county's chief administrative officer to make recommendations on how to spend the money.To implement the child care grants, CAO Helen Robbins-Meyer will negotiate agreements with The San Diego Foundation, the YMCA of San Diego County and Child Development Associates, Inc.Supervisor Jim Desmond said while he has been critical of Great Plates program, based on the costs per meal, he understands it helps restaurants while also helping shut-in seniors who may not have any social interaction otherwise.Desmond added that if there's money left over from the program or school testing, it should go towards area food banks.In related actions following an update on county COVID-19 prevention efforts, the board approved Desmond's motion for a waiver to the school- closures mandate.The board also approved a separate motion allowing county enforcement of businesses -- in terms of complying with reopening requirements -- based on Phase 2 mandates. 1741

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Parole was granted Wednesday for the man who killed a 20-year-old college student and pizza deliveryman in 1995 when he was a 14-year-old gang member.Tony Hicks, now 37, was the first youth in California to be tried as an adult under a law adopted in 1995 that allowed juveniles as young as 14 to be tried as adults for murder. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Tariq Khamisa and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. He has served 23 years behind bars.Wednesday's decision, made by the state parole board, now goes to the governor's office for possible approval.Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed Senate Bill 1391, which eliminates the ability to try a defendant under the age of 16 as an adult for any violent crime. Those convicted under the new law will be held in locked juvenile facilities instead of adult prisons."If this law (SB 1391) had been in effect in 1995, Tony (Hicks) would have been prosecuted in Juvenile Court and paroled many years ago,'' said Azim Khamisa, the victim's father. ``The other two individuals involved in the crime were sentenced in Juvenile Court. Tony made a mistake. He has atoned for it in many ways. He has paid his debt to society. It is time for him to be it in many ways. He has paid his debt to society. District Attorney Summer Stephan has the option of taking a position at the hearing, which she is scheduled to attend, along with Deputy District Attorney Richard Sachs, Sierra said.In the wake of his son's murder, Azim Khamisa reached out to Hicks' grandfather in the spirit of forgiveness and founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation, which ``is dedicated to teaching and inspiring forgiveness, hope and peace in youth and setting them on a path towards opportunity,'' according to the San Diego nonprofit's mission statement.``We plan to bring Tony on to the staff at TKF where he can share his powerful message about the consequences of violence and the benefits of restorative justice with thousands of youth,'' Tasreen Khamisa said. ``The bottom line is that our kids need Tony. He will have a powerful voice in helping stop youth violence.''In preparation for his second chance at freedom, Hicks has earned his GED and college credits toward an associate's degree, according to the foundation. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The entire passenger and freight rail line between Oceanside and San Diego will be closed at midnight and remain shut down all weekend for improvements, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.Crews will shut down the lines just after midnight Saturday through 5 a.m. Monday, according to SANDAG, which will make several improvements, including work on the Mid-Coast Trolley project, extending the UC San Diego blue line trolley from the Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego north toward UC San Diego.Four rail services use the San Diego segment of the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo coastal rail corridor: North County Transit District, Metrolink, Amtrak and the BNSF freight line.Passengers using the Coaster train line are advised to use the BREEZE Route 101 or local buses. Amtrak will offer bus connections from Oceanside to San Diego for passengers with reservations.Crews working on the Mid-Coast Trolley project will remove temporary support structures, build retaining walls, protect slopes and install fencing and cable railing, as well as sewer, water, and drainage pipes.The entire project is expected to be completed late next year.Near the San Diego River Bridge, crews will add nearly a mile of double track across the river to create a continuous 7-mile stretch of double track in the southernmost portion of the coastal rail corridor.During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent noise and lights.Passenger rail service is scheduled to resume for the Monday morning commute. 1569
