BEIJING, Aug.1 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China, China's central bank, has asked its branches to effectively implement a moderately loose monetary policy in the second half of the year.The bank urged maintaining the continuity and stability of monetary policies while making them more targeted and flexible, according to a statement on the bank's website after a meeting with branch presidents.It also urged adhering to the policy of striking a balance between keeping stable and relatively fast economic growth, adjusting the economic structure and managing inflation expectations.It asked its branches to stick to its annual lending target while maintaining market liquidity at a reasonable level.Housing loan policies should be strictly implemented to ensure the stable and healthy development of China's real estate market, the statement said.h China's monetary policy should be more proactive, targeted and effective, the statement added.The central bank has set a target to keep the country's new bank lending to below 7.5-trillion-yuan (1.1 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2010.In the first half of the year, China's new yuan-denominated lending hit 4.63 trillion yuan, down 2.74 trillion yuan from the same period last year.

BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) - Flooding was temporarily eased on the Yangtze River as the Three Gorges Dam on China's longest river saw water levels slightly down from its crest stage, the nation's flood control authority said Saturday.The water level at the dam fell to 158.54 meters as of 8 a.m. Saturday, 0.32 meters lower than its highest level of 158.86 meters which took place on Friday morning, according to data from the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief HeadquartersThe water was flowing from the upper stream of the river at 31,000 cubic meters per second, said the office in a statement on its website.However, the water level was still 13.54 meters above the alarm level and is expected to increase again due to rainfall and water inflows from tributaries in the upper stream, the statement said.The office warned that the water level at the dam is very likely to exceed the historical level, if it rises again.Some of the country's other major rivers were also witnessing water levels surpassing their warning levels, including the Jialing River, Hanjiang River and Huaihe River, the statement said.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said China was at a "crucial stage" for flood control during an inspection tour in central China's Hubei Province that began July 23.He ordered local governments to adopt scientific measures to be well-prepared for "more serious floods and disasters" .Floods in China this year have left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of Friday, according to the flood control office.

URUMQI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 380 Chinese nationals had returned home aboard Chinese chartered flights as of Tuesday night from southern Kyrgyzstan where ethnic clashes have left some 170 people dead.The Chinese government has sent four chartered planes to bring home nationals including business people and students in Kyrgyzstan. Three chartered planes dispatched on Monday and Tuesday have returned and the fourth one left at 9:37 p.m. Tuesday an airport in Urumqi, capital of northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, for Osh of Kyrgyzstan to fly home more Chinese nationals.More than 600 Chinese nationals living around Osh have been sent to the city's airport with help from the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese embassy in Kyrgyzstan. BRASILIA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Foreign Ministry issued a statement late Tuesday, expressing the government's regret over the tragedy caused by mudslides in northwest China's Gansu province."The Brazilian government learned with deep regret of the avalanches" that killed at least 1,117 people, with 627 missing in China's Gansu province, the statement said.Brazil also expressed its solidarity with the Chinese government and people, offering condolences to the families of the victims.The devastating landslide, which occurred Saturday in Zhouqu City, Gansu province, also destroyed numerous houses and buildings.So far, a total of 567 survivors have received treatment while 64 seriously injured have been hospitalized, according to the provincial civil affairs bureau.
