The lawsuit, filed by the family of Earl McNeil, names National City as well as several officers and deputies. McNeil showed up at the National City Police Department in 2018 seeking help. According to the medical examiner, McNeil had high levels of methamphetamine in his system when he died. The lawsuit claims officers used excessive force and failed to give him proper medical care. Nationally, the number of people filing for new unemployment benefits is still historically high. It rose last week to 898,000.This comes as the number of people experiencing long-term unemployment is growing too. The number of people out of work for more than 27 weeks increased by 781,000 in September. More than 200 small earthquakes peppered California's Imperial Valley on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.The USGS reports that 240 small earthquakes occurred near Westmorland, California, between 4 p.m. local time Wednesday evening into 8 p.m. local time Thursday morning. Most of the quakes measure about magnitude 3.0, with the largest being a magnitude 4.9 quake.The seismic activity continued into Thursday morning, as dozens more small earthquakes occurred in what the USGS calls the "Brawley seismic zone." Dr. Lucy Jones, a seismologist, founder & chief scientist at her center, said it is one of the largest swarms ever seen in the Imperial Valley — and it is historically one of the most active swarms in Southern California. According to the USGS, the area also saw earthquake swarms in 1981 (which included a magnitude 5.8 quake) and in 2012 (which included a magnitude 5.4 quake).The USGS reports that the earthquake swarm will continue to produce small earthquakes over the next seven days, and while there may be a few moderately-sized earthquakes up to magnitude 5.4, the system will eventually peter out.A second less likely scenario laid out by the USGS indicates that a large earthquake between magnitudes 5.5 and 6.9 is possible. A third — and least likely — scenario indicates that an enormous earthquake of magnitude 7.0+ could happen, which would cause "serious" impacts on nearby communities.Luckily, Jones said the earthquake swarm is too far away to have an impact on the dangerous San Andreas."The swarm happening now south of the Salton Sea, near Westmorland is over 30 km south of the end of the San Andreas," she tweeted. "It is in the Brawley seismic zone, a common source of swarms. So far largest is M4.4. Too far from the San Andreas to change the probability of a quake on it." 1828

Mosquitos are known for spreading a number of infectious diseases through their bites. But a trial set to begin in 2021 hopes to slow the spread of these diseases, such as West Nile and Zika.A plan approved for the Florida Keys will release millions of genetically modified mosquitoes, known as Aedes aegypti, in hopes of reducing the number of bites. The genetically modified mosquitoes are all males, which, unlike female mosquitoes, do not bite humans.The trial is being conducted by Oxitec, which is based in the UK. Earlier in 2020, the EPA gave Oxitec approval to move forward with the trial.“To meet today’s public health challenges head-on, the nation needs to facilitate innovation and advance the science around new tools and approaches to better protect the health of all Americans,” the EPA said earlier this year. “After all appropriate approvals are garnered, EPA looks forward to receiving field test results regarding the effectiveness of this promising new tool that could help combat the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like the Zika virus.The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District say that the male mosquitoes have been genetically modified to only provide live male offspring when mating with a female.The experimental use permit begins in 2021, and the trial must conclude by 2022.Some environmental groups and residents have expressed opposition to the plan. A group opposing the plan said that 2,000 letters were sent to officials requesting the plan be put on hold.Some are concerned that timing of the trial during a pandemic is not a good policy."The release of genetically engineered mosquitoes will needlessly put Floridians, the environment and endangered species at risk in the midst of a pandemic," said Dana Perls, food and technology Program Manager at Friends of the Earth. "This approval is about maximizing Oxitec's profits, not about the pressing need to address mosquito-borne diseases."Others say the plan is ‘risky.’"The Mosquito Control Board has an obligation to our community, not a vendor that's products are risky and untrustworthy. FKMCD wants to proceed with an experiment that may be damaging to public and environmental health and our local economy," said Barry Wray, Executive Director of the Florida Keys Environmental Coalition. EDEN, the Bronx — Police arrested three people Thursday in connection with the shooting death of a dad gunned down as he crossed a Bronx street with his daughter.Davon Delks, 21, Laquan Heyward, 25 and Devon Vines, 27, were all arrested on murder charges.Anthony Robinson, 29, was holding his 6-year-old daughter's hand when he was fatally shot on July 6. Video showed Robinson, hand in hand with his 6-year-old daughter, look to his left at a Bronx intersection and cross when a car paused to let them go. The driver then pulled up and someone in the vehicle opened fire, striking Robinson repeatedly.Robinson collapsed to the ground at East 170th Street and Sheridan Avenue.
