SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Documents show the man accused of pummeling a teenage Syrian refugee on a trolley car has a history of run-ins with authorities. On Oct. 15, Adrian Vergara was accused of the crime after approaching the teen and asking him if he's Mexican."He responded, no I am Arab. He does not speak a lot of English, and with that response the person began to pummel him in the face," Geneviéve Jones-Wright, Legal Director, Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans, said.Tuesday, San Diego Police said they had arrested Vergara on suspicion of assault with force and violation of civil rights.RELATED: Man accused of attacking Syrian refugee aboard trolley car arrested10News dug into Vergara's background and found a history of violent incidents. In 2012, court documents say Vergara threatened a man with a billy club. He did community service in the South Metro Career Center. A letter says he worked well there with special needs students as well as general students. A certificate also showed he completed a 12-hour anger management program in 2013 and was called an outstanding professional candidate.RELATED: Teen attacked on trolley in possible hate crimeIn 2015, a case was dismissed accusing Vergara of attacking another man. And in 2016, he was charged with grand theft and burglary for breaking into the Central Library.Later that year, documents say Vergara violated a restraining order against his ex-girlfriend, kicking her front door, texting her and in a phone call, cursing at her and saying, "if you don't talk to me I'm going to go to your job and cause a scene. I don't care about my life." Documents show he called her 20 times in 30 minutes.Court documents also show a carjacking charge at the beginning of 2017.In October 2017, Vergara was charged for beating up a man and given a stay away order from the MTS Imperial Transit Center. The most recent document shows he violated a court order, put in place to prevent domestic violence in January 2019. 1996

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Governor Gavin Newsom's announcement Friday on the fall school year left many parents unsure what to expect.Schools have a list of guidelines they must comply with to open in person classes. The most difficult guideline, potentially, is to stay off the state's watch list for 14 consecutive days. This leaves parents in limbo.Tancy Campbell has been juggling a 9-year-old, 5-year-old with special needs, and an Esty shop while her husband is deployed with the Navy. "I'm overwhelmed right now," she said.RELATED: Newsom: Counties on state watch list won't start fall school year in personWhen it comes to the school year she has mixed feelings. She is less nervous about her 9-year-old who understands social distancing and mask etiquette, but her 5-year-old son hasn't reached that level yet."I'm worried about him going but I'm worried about him staying as well so it's like a double-edged sword," Campbell said. She said he has autism and is regressing without social interaction, but if he were to go to school right now she's worried he could catch coronavirus. These stresses piling up over the past four months.Licensed Psychologist Dr. Michelle Carcel said she's heard from a lot of exhausted parents and has this advice, "all of us need to take a step back and realize this is an imperfect situation and mistakes will be made and that's okay."She said it's important to create a routine to set barriers with the kids. "Also putting signs in different places where there's play area time and where there's school time. So that way you're making a division with work and play," Carcel added.Post a schedule somewhere that everyone can read, so the kids know when parents are busy and when they can have their attention. She suggests dividing and conquering if possible. Enlist help from your partner, or family members to divvy up the childcare responsibilities. She also said if you aren't happy about the decisions being made, let your representatives know. "You're not helpless, you're not alone, make sure you advocate for you and your family," Carcel said. Most importantly, don't forget to take care of yourself."I would just like to tell all the mommas and the daddies to stay strong if they're at home with their kids, it's a lot," Campbell said.A lot to handle, but a labor of love. 2320

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hepatitis A is a microscopic killer that is very hard to kill. The virus can last weeks, even months, on a dry surface, according to the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention.“The majority of infected individuals will not have symptoms, but few will have symptoms,” Dr. Tarek Hassanein, professor of medicine at UCSD, said.San Diego County is in the midst of a Hepatitis A epidemic. The virus is known to have sickened 421 people and killed 16 in San Diego County.RELATED: Customers at San Diego restaurant may have been exposed to hepatitis AThe outbreak started with the homeless and drug using population. Now it has spread to the general population, with nearly 50 documented cases of people becoming sick, who have no ties to homeless or drug users, according to the San Diego County Public Health Department.Epidemiologists are still trying to find anything the people may have in common, but so far have not found any link.Crews are power-washing sidewalks with a bleach solution in East Village downtown.RELATED:  1057

y have, be grateful for the fact that we exist," says Chopra. For those who have lost a loved one: "Grief is something we must embrace. You can't bypass...If you resist grief you get worse, it causes more stress," Chopra added. But for everyone else, the worst use of our imagination is fear."That fearful thought is recycling through social media, through television, through everything that we see ... So first recognize that 99% of your thoughts is just recycling of everyone else's fear. So why do you take ownership of thoughts that didn't come from you?" asked Chopra. Professional and personal change, forced on so many now, is a moment to look inside. It's time for self-care and it starts with our thoughts."Ask yourself who am I? Want do I really want? What's my purpose? What am I grateful for? And you'll pivot," says Chopra. "So, mindfulness is nothing more than being aware of the choices you're making, and the experiences you're having right now, and if your experiences are not pleasant."The world in crisis, can also be inside us as hostility, resentment, and grievances — all toxic."So, get rid of toxicity in your life, this is the opportunity ... Toxic emotions, toxic relationships, toxic environments, toxic food...Time to detox," Chopra said.Chopra is blunt about the turmoil in the world. But as we rely on science and technology to find a creative response to COVID, we can lessen exhaustion by not living in the future. We must right now confront that reality. Strident, extreme atmosphere, politically, racially. What's it doing? Creating a world that frankly speaking is idiotic," Chopra said. "If you live in the present, then all you do is say: I want today, my body to be joyful and energetic, my emotions to be loving, have empathy and compassion ... My mind to clear and my soul to be light, today. That's it." 3011
