In order to understand the trade war, it’s important to know what tariffs are.A tariff is basically a tax thrown on something that's being imported. Say a company in Country A really wanted to sell shoes in Country B. Country B could throw a tariff on those sweet sneakers, meaning it would cost the company in Country A more money to sell them. There are essentially two types of tariffs: specific and ad valorem. The latter is a flat tax on one unit of some imported good; like a 0 tariff on each bushel of wheat. Ad valorem, which means "according to value" in Latin, is a tax based on the percentage of that good's value.So, if there's a 15 percent tariff on a type of car, the money that tariff is bringing in would rise and fall with the car's market price, but the percentage would stay the same. Nowadays, tariffs can be implemented to protect domestic companies from worldwide competition and to protect consumers for national security reasons, or in retaliation for the actions of another country.But using tariffs come with a risk. If two countries start slapping punitive tariffs on each other, it could spark a tit for tat trade war, which almost no one wants.   1523

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Deborah Birx is warning Americans who traveled for Thanksgiving and attended a large gathering that they should assume they were infected with the coronavirus.The coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force is advising those who gathered with numerous loved ones for the holiday to get tested in next few days.“If your family traveled, you have to assume that you are exposed and you became infected and you really need to get tested in the next week and you need to avoid anyone in your family with comorbidities or (who is) over 65,” Birx told “Face the Nation” on Sunday.Birx also says the task force is even asking families to mask indoors if they chose to gather during Thanksgiving and others went across the country or even into the next state.“And if you're over 65 or you have comorbidities and you gathered at Thanksgiving, if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately because we know that our therapeutics work best, both our antivirals and our monoclonal antibodies, work best very early in disease,” said Birx.During her interview, Birx referred to the current spike in COVID-19 cases as the nation’s “third wave” and compared it to second wave we saw over the summer.“We saw what happened post Memorial Day,” said Birx. “Now we are deeply worried about what could happen post-Thanksgiving because the number of cases, 25,000 versus 180,000 a day, that's why we are deeply concerned.”Birx says she’s worried about how last week’s holiday gatherings may increase the case count even more, especially in states with fewer COVID-19 restrictions. He said the heavy holiday travel could make the current surge in COVID-19 cases even worse as we head into the winter months."What we expect, unfortunately, as we go for the next couple of weeks into December is that we might see a surge superimposed on the surge we are already in," said Fauci.Unless something changes dramatically, Fauci predicts health officials will advise against travel for the end of the year holidays and New Year’s Eve, like they did for Thanksgiving.“We’re going to have to make decisions as a nation, state, city and family, that we’re in a very difficult time and we’re going to have to do the kinds of restrictions of things we would have liked to have done, particularly in this holiday season. WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden will nominate Pete Buttigieg to be his secretary of transportation, the campaign confirmed on Tuesday.Biden formally introduced Buttigieg as his pick to run the agency at an event on Wednesday. According to Biden, if confirmed, Buttigieg would become the first openly gay person to serve in a cabinet position.In his remarks, Buttigieg said he would strive to improve America's crumbling infrastructure and shared stories of growing up in Indiana with ambitions to be an airline pilot."Travel in my mind is synonymous with growth, with adventure — even love. So much so that I proposed to my husband Chasten in an airport terminal. Don't let anybody tell you that O'Hare isn't romantic," Buttigieg said. At 38, Buttigieg falls under the "millennial" generation and would also be the first person of that generation to serve in the cabinet. As head of the Department of Transportation, the 38-year-old would likely play a large role in accomplishing Biden’s goal of passing a sweeping infrastructure bill, which has been pitched as a major job-creator.“Mayor Pete Buttigieg is a patriot and a problem-solver who speaks to the best of who we are as a nation. I am nominating him for Secretary of Transportation because this position stands at the nexus of so many of the interlocking challenges and opportunities ahead of us. Jobs, infrastructure, equity, and climate all come together at the DOT, the site of some of our most ambitious plans to build back better," Biden said.Buttigieg has already made history. During his recent run for president, he became the first openly gay major party candidate to win delegates.The former presidential candidate helped Biden solidify the Democratic nomination when he dropped out of the race before Super Tuesday and endorsed the former vice president, consolidating the moderate vote against progressive Sens.
