A Tennessee man was arrested after watching ISIS videos, and then lying about his stay at a mental institution when he tried to buy a sniper rifle, according to federal officials.According to a federal indictment, federal agents began looking into Khari Malik Whitehead last year, after they talked to someone who knew him. That person told Metro Nashville Police they were concerned Whitehead was watching ISIS propaganda videos on the internet.They also told the ATF Whitehead may have possibly been radicalized, and that they were afraid that he may commit a mass murder one day.The indictment said Whitehead was committed to a mental institution late last year, but he lied about that in February on a background check form he filled out at the Walmart in La Vergne as he tried to buy a semi-automatic rifle. He asked to purchase a rifle that could "hold a lot of bullets"However, the purchase didn't go through. His stay at the mental institution was picked up by the background check, and Whitehead was denied the purchase.Whitehead's lie on the background check form was enough for federal prosecutors to file charges against him. 1175

A New York appeals court has denied a motion by President Donald Trump's attorney to stay the Summer Zervos defamation case pending appeal, meaning the gathering of evidence known as "discovery" can move forward as both parties await a ruling on the appeal.Zervos, a former "Apprentice" contestant, filed a lawsuit against Trump in January 2017 in which she alleged that Trump defamed her in 2016 after she said he sexually assaulted her in 2007.Trump's lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, is appealing the March 20 ruling by New York Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Schecter, who allowed the case to go forward. He wants the appellate court to revisit the matter of whether the Constitution's Supremacy Clause bars a state court from hearing an action against a sitting president -- what would be considered immunity, because it would make the President immune from suit. Schecter ruled it does not. Kasowitz also argues that Schecter erred in denying the President's motion to dismiss or delay the case on First Amendment grounds.Kasowitz said his motion should be granted on the grounds that New York and federal law both mandate a stay pending appeal, that proceeding with the case could irreparably harm Trump, and that the temporary suspension being sought was not designed to delay the case. But the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court denied his motion in a one-page ruling."We look forward to proving Ms. Zervos's claim that defendant lied when he maliciously attacked her for reporting his sexually abusive behavior," said Zervos' attorney, Mariann Meier Wang. A new report from the CDC and Rhode Island shows COVID-19 rates below one percent in childcare facilities with young children this summer. They also found a low rate of secondary transmission among these facilities, with 15 percent of coronavirus cases resulting in transmission to at least one other person.“The critical thing here is to build the confidence of teachers, the confidence of parents,” said Dr. Robert Redfield, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “This study provides data, that when things are done with vigilance in partnership with the public health community, you can, in fact, in a complex situation like child care ... you can reopen child care" and have low rates of secondary transmission. The study tracked coronavirus cases at childcare facilities in Rhode Island this summer. On June 1, the state was seeing a decline in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, and allowed childcare programs to re-open after a 3-month closure.In order to reopen, the facility had to submit a plan to the state for approval that included reduced enrollment, a cohort of no more than 20 people including kids and staff, universal use of masks for adults, and daily symptom screening of adults and kids.Roughly 75 percent of licensed center and home-based childcare facilities were approved to reopen, caring for 18,945 children.Between June 1 and July 31, there were 101 possible child care-associated COVID-19 cases identified at the facility level; among those, 49 were excluded because they had a negative COVID-19 test.Of the remaining 52 confirmed and probable cases, 30 were children; that is roughly .16 percent of the 18,945 children in childcare in Rhode Island this summer. There were 20 teachers and 2 parents who are among the confirmed or probable cases.Cases were confirmed an average of two days after specimen collection.Contact tracing led to the quarantine of 687 children and 166 staff members; that’s roughly 3.6 percent of the total children in Rhode Island care facilities this summer being impacted by quarantine efforts.The cases happened at 29 of the 666 childcare facilities, in 20 of the facilities, there was a single coronavirus case and no transmission. Five of the 29 programs, 15 percent, had two to five cases.The remaining four coronavirus cases may or may not have had secondary transmission. Health officials state those facilities were breaking protocol by moving members of a cohort around to other classrooms, delayed reporting of symptoms, etc. that made it difficult to track.The CDC warns these results were only possible because of decreasing COVID-19 rates in the state, and the community effort to slow the spread of coronavirus. This includes wearing masks and practicing social distancing when around other people.“I understand masks can be uncomfortable to wear and hard to remember to bring when you go out,” Dr. Redfield said. “Schools are not islands in and of themselves, they are connected to the communities around them.”The study says maintaining stable staffing was one of the most difficult things; needing to cover teacher breaks, vacations, etc. while still maintaining the smaller cohort sizes.They recommend additional funding to continue with the smaller class sizes. 3271

A man was arrested for battery and disorderly conduct for allegedly spitting on a boy and telling him he “now has coronavirus.”Jason Copenhaver, 47, walked up to the boy on Sunday at a restaurant in Treasure Island, Florida. He asked the boy if he was wearing a face mask, according to the police report. The boy said yes, and Copenhaver told him to take it off and asked to shake his hand.The boy refused, according to police, then Copenhaver grabbed the boy’s hand and said “you now have coronavirus” while standing close enough to the boy for spit to land on his face.The police report also notes that Copenhaver was believed to be under the influence of alcohol, and tried to hit an employee at the restaurant who asked him to sit down. Staff was able to walk him outside and hold him on the ground until police arrived.Once in custody, Copenhaver told police he doesn’t know if he has coronavirus and has never been tested. 936

A social media post crediting a Nashville man for stepping in to comfort a flight passenger who was body-shamed has gained plenty of attention.Savannah Phillips wrote on Facebook about her experience after being called "a smelly fatty" on board a United flight from Oklahoma to Illinois on Monday. The mother said she always preferred to sit by herself in flights because she was self-conscious about her weight, and feared others would feel uncomfortable sitting next to her.A man she described to be in his 60s with yellow sunglasses who claimed to be a comedian sat next right next to her.Her post stated,"As soon as I got buckled, he sat back down...his phone was maybe 12 inches from my face and he proceeded to text someone that he was sitting next to a "smelly fatty." I don’t even know what the rest of his text said. I turned my head away as fast as I could. I was shocked and it was like confirmation of the negative things I think about myself on a daily basis. Before I knew it, I could feel hot, salty tears coming down my face."Phillips told Scripps station WTVF in Nashville she began to cry and even prayed for the man. Unbeknownst to her, another passenger sitting in the row behind them across the aisle also happened to see the message on his phone."He tapped him on the shoulder and said, 'I need to talk to you'" she recalled. "The guy took his earphones out and turned around and he said, 'We're switching seats right now.'" Phillips remembered the passenger saying he was not going to put up with what the man said. They eventually switched seats, and an unlikely and pleasant encounter ensued."When he sat down he saw me crying and asked why I was crying." Phillips said. "He said to not let it get to me and not to worry about it, and we started making small talk which made me feel better." She learned the passenger who helped comfort her was Chase Irwin, a father and manager at Dierks Bentley's Whiskey Row Nashville on Broadway.Phillips shared her experience on social media in hopes he would be recognized, and within half an hour, he acknowledged reading the post.Irwin emphasized to WTVF on the phone that he did not intervene for publicity. He described feeling infuriated once seeing the message from the man's phone after he further said he was going to vomit. "I was going to wait until the end of the flight to say something but I could not have this guy sit next to her this whole flight and her thinking he's making fun of her," Irwin said. "It really gets to me deep down when I see someone crying, and when I saw her crying it really hit me hard and actually got sick to my stomach.""I was so blessed and happy he was there," Phillips added.
