URUMQI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were racing to evacuate more than 800 people still trapped by rain-triggered mountain torrents in a remote valley in China's far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region late Friday afternoon.Rescuers managed to reach the site in Kuqa County, of Aksu Prefecture, at 1:26 a.m. Friday, about 24 hours after rains and floods stranded more than 1,000 residents, construction workers and tourists in the mountainous area.As of 5 p.m. Friday, more than 170 trapped people, including 120 tourists and some 50 railway construction workers, had been taken to safe places. No casualties had been reported, said a spokesman with the prefecture's committee of the Communist Party of China.The locals dam up at a village of Alaer city in the upper reaches of the Tarim River, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, July 30, 2010. The Tarim River was hit by the largest flood in eight years on Friday.Some 100 more rescuers, carrying drinking water, drugs and food, had been sent to the site. The regional government had dispatched helicopters to drop food and bottled water to the trapped people, said the spokesman.Floods have inundated many roads, as well as damaged three bridges and 12 buildings in the county. More than 13,000 youths from the county were ready to strengthen the dikes to combat flood waters, he said.

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China values its traditional friendship with Zimbabwe and hopes to push forward relations between the two countries as well as the two armed forces, said Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie here on Sunday.Liang made the remarks in a meeting with Zimbabwean Commander of Defence Forces Constantine Guveya Chiwenga.Liang hailed the traditional friendship between the two countries. He spoke of Zimbabwe's defence forces as a "good friend and partner" of People's Liberation Army (PLA).Since the establishment of China-Zimbabwe diplomatic ties 30 years ago, cooperation between the two nations had continuously deepened in the areas of politics, economics and trade, culture, education and health, Liang said.China expressed appreciation for Zimbabwe's firm adherence to the one-China policy and its support to China's peaceful reunification, said Liang. He also thanked Zimbabwe for support on issues concerning China's core and major interests.Chiwenga expressed appreciation for China's long-standing support to Zimbabwe in various areas. YICHANG, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam was tested for the second time this month when the swiftest water flow of the year hurtled down the swollen Yangtze River on Wednesday morning.Flow rates as high as 56,000 cubic meters per second were recorded at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, dam engineers said.The dam withstood the flow with a water discharge rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, meaning 16,000 cubic meters of water per second accumulated in the reservoir behind the dam.The safety monitoring results of the dam during the second flood peak have met engineers' predictions to prove its ability to contain flood waters, said Cao Guangjing, chairman of the China Three Gorges Corporation.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 158 meters at 8 a.m.Wednesday, about 17 meters below its maximum capacity of 175 meters.Officials expect the water level to rise to 161.5 meters Friday, a spokesman with the Yangtze River hydrology bureau said Wednesday.Continuous downpours in recent weeks have raised water levels in the upper reaches of the Yangtze.Water flows on the river's upper reaches reached 70,000 cubic meters per second on July 20 -- the highest level since the dam was completed last year and 20,000 cubic meters more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people.Ship traffic through the dam resumed last Thursday after the first peak flow passed. But shipping was halted again at 10 p.m. Tuesday as the second round of floodwaters approached.After shipping service was suspended, a road near the dam was opened for vehicles to transport goods and people across the dam.
