CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - After hundreds of signs and fences along the trails at the Carlsbad Ecological Reserve are ripped from the ground, Fish and Wildlife is now setting up a specialized enforcement team. Secret cameras set up around the 500 acre reserve caught dozens of bikers ripping up signs, cutting fence wire and vandalizing property.Fish and Wildlife representative Peter Tira told 10News this is nothing new."We're not dealing with recreational mountain bikers, we're dealing with folks who disregard the law and believe the law doesn't apply to them," said Tira.Starting Saturday, April 6, Fish and Wildlife enforcement officers will hand out citations to all bikers who are caught riding the trails. Each citation comes with a 0 fine. "We've installed about 500 signs on this property almost all of which have been taken down or vandalized. On each of the signs it says 'No Bicycles'," said Tira. However, many mountain bikers who showed up to the trails Wednesday told 10News this is a popular spot for many in the Carlsbad area. Ivan Sekanovich comes to ride these trails at least once a week and is disappointed that Fish and Wildlife are letting the actions of a small group of bikers ruin it for the rest of them."For the most part, people know where they're supposed to hike and the bikers know where to bike," Sekanovich said. 1358
CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — Legoland California's massive "Star Wars" section of the park's Miniland area will depart for a galaxy far, far away next year. The park said the area will make way for something new eventually, but is tight-lipped on what guests can expect to take the attraction's place. Guests have until Jan. 6, 2020 to visit the themed display."We’re always creating new adventures for our guests and excited to bring new experiences in the upcoming years. We haven’t announced yet what will take the place of LEGO Star Wars Miniland but know it’s been a popular area which is why we wanted to give our guests a heads up to come visit before it’s gone," a park spokesperson said.RELATED: German father and son visit every Legoland park in the world in 13 daysKids and adults have visited Legoland's "Star Wars" Miniland for almost a decade now. More than 1.5 million Lego bricks make up seven scenes from the franchise's first six films, including displays of the Millennium Falcon on Tatooine, a battle on the frozen planet Hoth, and an imposing Death Star surrounded by X-Wings and TIE Fighters. The area's last major addition came in 2017 with the opening of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in 2017. A 16-foot-long Star Destroyer Finalizer made of more than 350,000 Lego bricks was installed as the Miniland's longest Lego model ever created. The park did not say what would happen to the gigantic models displayed throughout the land or what prompted the decision to close the area.RELATED: Groundbreaking held for SeaWorld's Sesame Place San Diego theme park in Chula VistaBut the closing comes as Star Wars takes a larger place in the Disney realm, with the opening of "Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge" at Disneyland and Disney World this past year.Legoland is busy developing its latest expansion as well. The "Lego Movie World" will be Legoland's largest addition to date, bringing characters from "The Lego Movie" to the park with new rides and attractions, and character meet-and-greets. CAMPO, Calif. — Campo Elementary School students were forced off a school bus after a man stormed onto the bus armed with two knives.Matthew Barker, 37, of Campo, was arrested by the San Diego Sheriff's Department after he boarded the bus packed with students at an apartment complex on Friday around 8:30 a.m., according to Mountain Empire Unified School District superintendent Kathy Granger.Officials said Barker entered the bus and was immediately told by the driver to leave. Barker ignored the driver and continued up the stairs and toward students before the driver got in front of him.As Barker tried to push past the driver, a grandmother of one of the students saw what was happening and got onto the bus to help the driver, officials said. That's when Barker reportedly pulled out a knife and swung at the driver. As the driver and grandmother struggled with Barker, an older student ushered students to the back exit of the school bus and called to nearby parents for help. The students were able to exit out of the bus unharmed.Another good Samaritan then got on the bus, at which point Barker turned the knife on himself, according to the Sheriff's Department. The Samaritan pried the knife away from Barker and pulled him off the bus as deputies arrived.Barker has been charged with felony assault. Authorities are investigating the incident and believes drugs were a factor in the attack. The bus driver and Samaritans were not injured."We take safety very seriously and want to assure you our buses remain a safe form of transportation for getting children to and from school," Granger said in a statement. 1669
