LANZHOU, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Nitric acid that spilled from a crashed truck in a northwest Chinese city Monday has caused no contamination of the Yellow River -- China's second longest river, local officials said.Workers had cleaned up tons of acid that entered a roadside drain in a four-hour operation after the accident in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, said a spokesman of a work crew tasked to clean up the chemical.Tests show the spill did not pollute the environment near the Yellow River, he said.Officials with the city environmental protection bureau said they would keep monitoring the water quality of the Yellow River.A truck carrying 14 tonnes of nitric acid overturned and caught fire on Liuzhong Highway near Lanzhou at noon on Monday. One driver was killed while the other was seriously injured.

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- China exported 16,000 tonnes of rare earth to Japan in the first nine months of the year, equivalent to 49.8 percent of its total rare earth exports, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Tuesday.The figure was a 167-percent year-on-year rise, MOC spokesman Yao Jian said at a press conference.Exports to the United States increased 5.5 percent year on year to 62 million tonnes during the same period, equivalent to 19 percent of China's total rare earth exports.China exported 32,200 tonnes of rare earth in the first nine months of the year at an average price of 14,800 U.S. dollars per tonne.Yao said the Chinese government has tightened regulations concerning the development, production and export of rare earth out of concern for the environment.China cut its 2010 rare earth export quota 39 percent year on year while rare earth development and production capacities were reduced by 25 percent and 23 percent, respectively, he said.In addition, China has added a 15- to 25-percent export duty on rare earth exports while banning the export of 41 rare earth-related processed products.China's restrictive policies have been criticized by Japan, the United States and European countries. They said China's restrictions on rare earth exports violate World Trade Organization rules. China refutes such claims."China's restrictive measures comply with WTO rules, as the steps were taken in the whole process of exploitation, production and export," Yao said.China continued to export rare earth in recent years even as environmental pressures grew and resource-depletion approached, he added.He said China hopes other rare earth-rich nations will develop their own resources while adding that China is ready to cooperate with other nations to mine and process rare earth in an environmentally-friendly way.Rare earth is a key component in the manufacture of high-tech products ranging from computers to airplanes. But mining rare earth is a highly-polluting process.With a 90 percent share of the world rare earth trade, China's export quotas are a sensitive issue. In early November, the MOC denied suggestions there would be a drastic reduction in 2011 rare earth export quotas.

MANILA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- A cargo ship with 24 Chinese crew aboard sank off the waters of the Philippines' Batanes province on Friday afternoon, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Saturday.Quoting a report from the Batanes provincial police office, PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz said Saturday the Panama cargo vessel MV Hong Wei met the incident about 120 nautical miles (222 kilometers) off Itbayat island around 3:22 p.m. Friday.Cruz could not immediately say what caused the vessel to sink or the vessel's destination.A passing vessel, MV Shun Tong, and a ship from China's Taiwan region's coast guard rescued 12 crew and two passengers, respectively, said Cruz, adding that at least three ships from Taiwan region's coast guard are currently at the scene to conduct search and rescue operations for the 10 still missing crew members.A rescue vessel from the Chinese mainland is expected to arrive at the site anytime Saturday to join the search and rescue operations, said Cruz.Wang Ben, police attache of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Philippines, told Xinhua that the embassy has confirmed the incident with China's Ministry of Transport. HANGZHOU, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Fire engulfed an electric appliance store in east China's Zhejiang Province Friday night, local police said.Flames broke out at around 8:30 p.m. at a store of GOME, China's leading electric appliance franchiser, in downtown Jinhua City, Zhejiang, according to the police.The store occupies the first three floors of a 13-storey residential building. The store was in business when the fire broke out."The fire has engulfed six floors of the building so far. At least 10 people from the upper residential apartments have been transferred to safer places by firefighters as of 9:50 p.m.," said a witness.The witness said there were people trapped on the 12th floor of the building, but the exact number of the trapped remained unknown.Ambulances are waiting on the road. So far, no casualties were reported.Fire fighters continue rescuing people from the upper floors by stairs.
