OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A fire that broke out Friday afternoon in Oceanside burned one victim, fire officials said.The flames were reported about 3 p.m. in the 600 block of Sleeping Indian Road. Oceanside Fire reported the "main fire has been knocked down" by 4:15 p.m., however crews expected to be on scene for several more hours.One person was burned and is being taken to the hospital, according to Oceanside Fire.Officials said the fire started in an area of RVs and spread to mulch. A neighbor told 10News the mobile homes belong to people who work in the area. Hazmat crews were called in after firefighters learned of previous drug activity on the property. There was also a concern about fuel and propane on site. However, Hazmat crews did not find any hazardous materials present. Five brush rigs and four engines were sent to the scene, fire officials said. One inmate was shot and at least five others were injured during a riot at Tehachapi Prison on Sunday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed.According to CDCR, six inmates were hurt during a riot that broke out at the facility Sunday afternoon at about 1:33 p.m. Five were injured during the riot itself and another was shot by an officer "in the buttocks area," CDCR said.The inmate who was shot was transported with non-life threatening injuries. The condition of the other five injured inmates is unclear at this time. No guards or staff were hurt.CDCR says three shots were fired during the incident. It's unknown how the riot started, and a portion of the prison was on lockdown as the investigation is ongoing. 796

(KGTV) — Police Saturday released a sketch of man who they say grabbed a 16-year-old in a "bear hug" and tried to kidnap her on her way to school.The teenager was walking to El Camino High School on Thursday just before 7:30 a.m. when the suspect walked past her on Mesa Drive, Oceanside Police say. As the two crossed paths, the suspect turned around and grabbed her in a "bear hug." During the struggle, the suspect fell to the ground and the teen was able to escape and make it to school, where she told campus security about the incident.RELATED: Man tries to grab 16-year-old girl walking to school in OceansideOceanside Police searched the surrounding area with a drone, but didn't find the suspect.The suspect was described as a Caucasian male, in his 50s, standing about 5-foot-9, and weighing 150 pounds, and with a bald head and light brown hair on both sides.Police added he's very thin and may be homeless. He also has a scab on the right side of his neck. The suspect was last seen wearing a tan pullover sweatshirt and black baggy, dirty jeans. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A state-wide program to help community college students transfer to 4-year schools has found increased success at Mira Costa College.The Puente Program helps educationally disadvantaged students navigate the complicated process of applying to 4-year schools, while also bringing them up to speed with other students who start their college careers at universities."They would transfer, but they were not ready," says Mira Costa Puente Counseling Coordinator Sinar Lomeli. "They didn't have the reading or writing comprehension skills. So they couldn't compete with students who were already there."The Puente Program began in 1981 at Chabot College in Hayward. It's now in 64 community colleges around the state. The students take two semesters of English reading and writing classes, and also get mentoring and counseling to guide them towards a 4-year degree."When I got to school, I was like a dog chasing a car," says Mira Costa Sophomore Manny Ramirez. "Getting into the Puente program gave me a sense of belonging. I could say I belong at college, and I can do whatever I set my mind to."Mira Costa's Puente Program is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2019. This year they're expanding to let current Puente students volunteer at elementary schools around Oceanside and Vista. That helps them get public service hours they can put on a college application. It also helps inspire the next generation to see college as a possibility."It gives us hope that we're leaving behind something for them to build on," says Ramirez.Results of the Puente Program have been well documented. Between 2013 and 2016, Puente student enrollment at UC schools has increased by 59%. OCEANSIDE, Calif. - A U.S. Border Patrol agent was arrested in North San Diego County on suspicion of possessing heroin and a short-barrel rifle, Oceanside Police reported Tuesday.Officers were patrolling an apartment complex on Los Arbolitos Blvd. where a suspicious person had been reported last week. That's when they reportedly found Brandon Herrera. He was passed out in the driver’s seat of a Ford pickup truck parked on a nearby street, police said.Oceanside Police said they found more than five grams of heroin and a weapon at the scene.The U.S. Border Patrol confirmed with Scripps station KGTV in San Diego it is gathering information about the report.Herrera is due in court April 17. 719
