Sometimes it takes something physical to overcome an emotional obstacle.For Gabby Hamilton that epiphany happened as she grappled with other girls.“It’s made me who I am,” she said. “You have to fight through frustrating times.”Hamilton is a wrestler at Life University, a private college located just outside of Atlanta, Georgia.She’s participating in one of the fastest growing sports in the country: women’s collegiate wrestling“Back in 1999 there were only three colleges that had women’s wrestling,” said Ashley Sword, Life University women’s wrestling head coach. “Now, there are almost 90 colleges that have women’s wrestling.”Sword is considered a pioneer of the sport. This former Team USA member is now sharing knowledge and helping pave the path for a new generation.“It’s still not completely accepted. It’s still not completely supported,” Sword said of women’s wrestling. “There are people who don’t understand why girls and women would want to wrestle.”Sword’s dedication paid off as Life University recently crowned its first women’s wrestling national champion: Julia Vidallon.“Julia showed that being exactly who you are is enough and I think that’s a great lesson,” Sword said. “It brought this confidence that they can do anything.”That confidence has carried over to other aspects of life.“Wrestling made me love my body actually,” Hamilton said. “It kind of made me more body supportive in how I look at myself.”Hamilton is now entering her sophomore season and believes embracing the grind of wrestling will help her long after she graduates.“There’s no end. there’s no roof,” she said. Some motorcycles for the Tempe Police Department are now equipped with upright mounts for semi-automatic rifles.Sergeant Ronald Elcock said the department tested the mounts last year and decided to install them on eight of its motorcycles.In a high-risk situation, Elcock says motorcycles can usually get to a scene much quicker than patrol cars.However, until now, motorcycle officers were only armed with handguns.Elcock said that's been a growing problem, because criminals are using more high-powered rifles and weaponry."We don’t want to go into those situations where we aren’t able to keep the public safe,” said Elcock.Even though the AR-15s are highly visible on the back of the motorcycles, Elcock says they are secured with special technology.“There's a locking mechanism that would prevent anyone, except for the operator, to be able to get at the equipment,” said Alcock.Some worry about the militaristic look of the AR-15s mounted on the back of the motorcycles.“There are people that may be scared to see it,” said Elcock. Some of the things you buy on eBay or Amazon could be going up in price, but President Donald Trump argues it will be better for American business.President Trump plans to withdraw from an old postal agreement that has allowed Chinese companies to ship small packages to the United States at a discounted price, often cheaper than what it costs for Americans to send things.“Products coming in from China, for instance, can come all the way from Shanghai to L.A. and have to pay a lower cost than if you or I wanted to ship a product across the street,” says Linda Dempsey, the VP of international economic affairs at the National Association of Manufacturers.The National Association of Manufacturers says the move will only impact smaller items, say for example, yoga pants on eBay. This particular example only costs a dollar, plus there’s no charge for shipping, although they’re coming from China. But, while you might not pay for shipping on this particular order, you’re paying for it in other ways you might not know about.“We might not see it in that package, say of yoga pants that's being shipped, but we're paying the subsidy through taxpayer dollars,” explains Dempsey. “We're paying for it as consumers when we go to the postal service and send a small package. We're paying higher rates for that because the postal service is being forced to subsidize these foreign shippers into the United States.”Critics also argue the cheaper rates hurt American businesses, and the president's proposal could help keep or create jobs in the United States.“It gives manufactures a fair chance at competing in the U.S. systems,” says Dempsey.While prices might go up for some products, there could be an upside for consumers.“We'll see how much those packages go up in terms of the foreign packages coming in,” Dempsey says. “We'll also be looking to see if the package prices for U.S. shipments will be going down.” 1925

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. According to American Cancer Society, one out of nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Ted was diagnosed two years ago at the age of 71.“The percentage of men my age that do come down with it is quite high, so I was startled – obviously nobody wants to find out they have cancer – but I wasn’t shocked,” prostate cancer patient Ted said.However, Ted found out he was a prime candidate for a type of treatment called HIFU, which stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The procedure has been around for quite a while, but it wasn’t approved for use on prostate cancer in the U.S. until 2015.“The HIFU procedure is basically a high-intensity focused ultrasound beam that oblates the cancer cells – basically blasts the cells away,” Ted said.Urologic surgeon Dr. Andre Abreu with Keck Medicine of USC says there’s a spectrum of patients who develop prostate cancer. Some are very low-risk, meaning they have very little cancer. They’re chosen for active surveillance where they are closely watched to make sure they don’t develop more cancer. Others have very advanced forms of cancer and need radical treatment like radiation or removal of the prostate. Then there are patients in the middle who largely benefit from HIFU.“In between, there are some patients with intermediate risk disease that are not the best candidate for us to watch them for active surveillance, however, the radical treatment would probably be associated with side effects,” Dr. Abreu said.Side effects like leaking urine, or issues with erectile dysfunction.“Some of these patients, they would be even willing to trade off some years of life, but having more quality of life,” Dr. Abreu said.A study at Keck Medicine of USC shows focal HIFU ablation carries a low risk of complication and can help preserve quality of life. That was certainly the case for Ted.“I experienced very little pain with the procedure," Ted said. "I took ibuprofen which is an over-the-counter pain reliever. And the only negative thing I did experience was wearing a catheter for a week.”“HIFU is repeatable, HIFU is non-invasive, HIFU is an out-patient procedure,” Dr. Abreu said.An out-patient procedure means the patient can be in and out of the hospital in one day without staying overnight. For Ted, it only took three hours. He says he would recommend the procedure to other men in a similar situation.“As I understand it, it’s been used in Europe for 15 years already with no problems. So, I think to take advantage of the technology that’s there is something the doctors should rely on,” Ted said. 2645
