Half of the coral populations in the Great Barrier Reef off Australia’s coast have been killed off because of warming ocean waters, a new study says.Between 25-30 percent of all marine species rely on coral reefs at some point in their life cycle. The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef, covering nearly 133,000 square miles.It has more than 411 species of hard corals documented, as well as 1,500 species of fish and other animals.Researchers looking at coral populations over 30 years starting in 1995 found there was decline in both shallow and deeper water, and across different species. They said two in particular, branching and table-shaped corals, were especially hard hit in 2016 and 2017 because of record-breaking temperatures.The study finds climate change to be a key driver in reef disturbances that disrupt recovery.“The potential for recovery of older fecund corals is uncertain given the increasing frequency and intensity of disturbance events. The systematic decline in smaller colonies across regions, habitats and taxa, suggests that a decline in recruitment has further eroded the recovery potential and resilience of coral populations,” the researchers note.They also say the coral that spawn the larvae that makes more coral have declined dramatically over large stretches of the reef.“Corals are tremendously resilient because of their capacity to produce millions of babies but they/we desperately need a break from disturbances,” Andreas Dietzel, a professor at the ARC Center and a co-author of the paper, said in an email to the Washington Post. 1600

(AP) — Authorities discovered a camel, a cow and a donkey roaming together along a Kansas road in a grouping reminiscent of a Midwestern Christmas Nativity scene.The Goddard Police Department asked for help Sunday in locating the owners of the “three friends traveling together (towards a Northern star).”Police said in a Facebook post that if they couldn’t find the owners, they would be “halfway toward a live Nativity this Christmas season.”Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Meyers says the animals belong to an employee of the nearby Tanganyika Wildlife Park.One person who replied to the Facebook post inquired, “Are there 3 wise looking men near?” Another speculated that they “may lead you to the Second Coming.”Goddard is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of Wichita. 799

Giving back to a city that needs it, William Duhon was born and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana. After Hurricane Laura hit last month, the town was reeling.“This my city man. This is where I’m from. Grew up not even two miles from here. This is it, so this is where I want to give back to,” said William Duhon.“We’ve been here pretty much everyday since like the 30th. I believe, storm happened on the 27th,” Duhon added.He’s sorting through donations at a community resource center that’s doubling as a makeshift food bank. He is joined by his mom Yolanda and his best friend from high school Kendrick Johnson. They say it's not easy to see the people coming by every day.“Some are like, 'We lost everything,'” said Yolanda Duhon.Everything might somehow be an understatement. William says he comes to volunteer after working the night shift and Kendrick called HIS BOSS on the oil platform and said he couldn’t come back while his community was in need.“I was actually, still had like 14 days left to go and report back to work, but I called my company and told them, hey look, I don’t have any damage to my house but my community is damaged and I can’t sit here and go back to work knowing I could be helping,” said Johnson. Johnson is so close to the Duhons, he's considered family.“This is my adopted son,” said Yolanda.“I’ve ate meals at her house, slept at her house, she picked me up from band practice before, I mean the list goes on, basically extended family. Basically they don’t look at me as a best friend, I’m part of their family,” said Johnson. This unconventional family is working hard to make sure people in Lake Charles have what they need to survive. It’s worth every minute for them.“It’s like handing them a box of hope. You know, like even though you may not have a home to go back to, even though a lot of people are still without lights, still with out clean running water, it’s like, here’s what we can do for you, here’s water you can drink, here’s something that you can eat,” said William Duhon. “This is our home, our priority to make sure that we’re straight on this side,” said Johnson. 2828

Homeowners in City Heights say the neighborhood isn't keeping up with the cost of living. While home prices are on the rise, development plans have come to a halt. Paul Smith is trying to transform City Heights. "They're still equating it to a high crime area or a place not worth investing in," said Smith. Like everywhere else in San Diego, the cost of living there is going up. "People are taking advantage of a housing shortage right now," said Smith. "So they can demand top dollar for their house. Because someone's willing to pay for it."He's been remodeling his home for the past 18 months. Many of his neighbors are doing the same. "We're seeing numbers in the 0's range now, 0, and I'd say probably five years ago you could buy a house for under 0,000."But, he says businesses in the area aren't adapting to the change. "It's constantly having to go over to North Park to look for services or South Park, outside the community."While some shops are moving in, he says it's simply not enough. "New businesses are seeming to move in, but there isn't a massive influx of investments like you're seeing in North Park and other areas," said Smith. "So we're seeing a lot of vacancies here."Those businesses would help build an even stronger community. "I don't always want to have to leave my neighborhood and to another area just to go get groceries, or go to a restaurant to eat," said Smith. For him, it can't come soon enough. "Change kind of is coming, but more needs to happen."The city did work on a redevelopment project in City Heights several years ago.
