LAHAINA, Maui (KGTV) - A wildfire put a twist on the Hurricane Lane response in Maui Friday.California resident Victoria Monroe is visiting Lahaina and posted photos to Twitter showing high winds slamming the Maui coastline. She also captured the brush fire moving toward the coast.The fire grew to 300 acres by Friday morning, with reports of structures lost. One woman suffered burns to her hands and legs.10News received an email from San Diego resident Jodi Vachon who owns a home in the fire area."I'm just worried about not only the hurricane but the fire as well. So, it's coming from both ends," said Vachon.Vachon told 10news her home is all right, but she's heard from neighbors in Maui that at least two homes have been lost.She said they're hoping Hurricane Lane will bring some heavy downpours to the burn area.Meanwhile, travelers at San Diego International Airport are prepared for a bumpy ride as they board flights to Honolulu, where the effects of Lane have yet to interfere with flights."I like a little rock and roll," said Dr. George Pratt, a Clinical Psychologist with Scripps Hospital in La Jolla.  He flew to a lead a seminar on the big island of Hawaii on the subject of success.As for a successful flight for nervous fliers, he said, "Meditate. LA SALLE, Colo. -- Under normal circumstances, most of us wouldn’t choose to get lost, but the growing number of corn mazes across America suggests that may not always be the case.Although corn mazes are a quintessential fall activity, the concept of a corn maze has only been around for several decades.Glen Fritzler is the owner of Fritzler Farm Park. He says he heard about the idea from his cousin in the late 90s. At the time, his crops were really struggling because of hail damage, so he decided it was time to go a different direction with his farm.“I was actually pretty desperate and so I called him up and said ‘hey what was that idea you had’ and he said ‘corn maze, man, you gotta do it,'” Fritzler said.So, he signed the contract and started designing mazes with The Maize company in the year 2000. The Maize was founded by Brett Herbst in 1996. The process is more complicated than people realize.“We have to have the corn maze design figured out by the first of June,” Fritzler said.Fritzler sends his ideas to Herbst who finalizes the concept to something that can work in a corn field.“You can only have so much detail in a certain design and a certain field size without compromising spacing between pathways,” Herbst said.The design is placed over a grid system that is translated onto a cornfield using flags and spray paint.“It takes 24 pages of regular grid paper to map out our corn mazes,” Fritzler said.In the span of one afternoon in early June, people who work for The Maize come out to mark the maze step by step with spray paint. Herbst compares it to connecting the dots on a cereal box.“They visualize us out there when the corn is 8-feet tall and we’re cutting it out with machetes or something. And that’s not how it’s done. We do it when it’s very early,” Fritzler said.Fritzler says each line on the paper represents a row of corn, and wherever there’s a trail, they have to remove the corn. Then they maintain and groom it for months, and make the path flat like a sidewalk.For the past two decades, the Fritzler Farm corn maze has seen many different patterns. Frtizler says they try to pick something fitting for that year in history. In 2020, it’s quite obvious what the design was inspired by.“So, we did a corn maze thanking not just the doctors and nurses, but everybody that sacrificed. The grocery store people, the people at the gas stations… everyone that had to go to work and interact with the public made sacrifices. And then the people that were laid off, they made sacrifices also.”Whether in a corn maze, or in real life, we can get through the twists and turns that come our way together.“I’m just so thankful for the corn maze and the opportunity to get to entertain people like we do,” Fritzler said. 2764

LA MESA, Calif (KGTV) - According to the California Department of Public Health, seven deficiencies were issued after an investigation of Sharp Grossmont Hospital. In April state investigators conducted a survey consisting of 14 closed medical records. According to the investigator's findings documented in a statement of deficiencies and plan of correction report, "Hospital leadership did not provide notification of a potential investigation and the use of video recording during medical treatment without patient's consent." Investigators also noted deficiencies with regulations related to medical staff accountability, patient's rights, and use of restraint or seclusion. According to the state document, "The patient has the right to personal privacy. This Statute is not met as evidenced by: Based on interview and record review, the hospital failed to ensure the privacy of all patients undergoing medical treatment in the WHC (women's health center) ORs (operating rooms) when the hospital's Admission Agreement for Inpatient and Outpatient Services was utilized as consent to allow video recording during medical treatment. Also, the Admission Agreement did not allow the patients' the option to acknowledge and/or decline video recording. As a result, the hospital leadership allowed video recording of patients undergoing medical treatment without knowledge or consent." The deficiencies listed fall under violations to conditions of participation for a hospital as listed in title 42 of the federal code of regulations.   A deficiency is a violation of a federal or state law or regulation that the California Department of Public Health cites during a survey or investigation.Officials with the California Department of Public Health tell 10News issuing deficiencies is a form of enforcement action. It requires the facility to submit a Plans of Correction to fix any violations. According to Sharp officials, in 2012 they were alerted that beginning in 2011, potentially powerful drugs and equipment were missing from the anesthesia cart in each of Sharp Grossmont Hospital's three Women's Center operating rooms. The hospital installed a computer monitor with a motion-activated camera in each of the three Women's Center operating rooms. Between July 2012 and June 2013, the videos were recorded. The hospital says the cameras were intended to record only individuals in front of the anesthesia carts. In a statement to 10News, a spokesperson for Sharp wrote:"In their survey, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) identified areas where opportunities for improvement existed. The hospital addressed each area of concern and created a plan of correction for those findings. Both CDPH and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) accepted Sharp Grossmont’s plan of correction, as confirmed in a follow-up survey. The hospital’s plan of correction provides that:The specific techniques used in the 2012-13 investigation have not been used since and will not be used for any future investigations.Any potential future investigations are required to strictly adhere to Sharp’s policies and procedures;Medical staff will be kept informed of any similar future investigations that may occur;Patients will receive full disclosure of any future investigations that may affect their privacy;The patient grievance practices have been strengthened to ensure patient complaints and grievances are appropriately and efficiently managed; andAdditional measures are in place to safeguard against the inadvertent release of patient information to third parties. Staff and clinicians have been educated on the hospital’s plan of correction and policies. While we are pleased that CDPH and CMS accepted our plan of correction, we regret that the investigation inadvertently recorded patients and may have caused distress to those we serve."More than 400 women who claim they were secretly recorded are suing the hospital.Court records show a hearing is scheduled in September. 4026

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — In the era of the "Me Too" movement and against a backdrop of sexual misconduct in the school district, a YouTube video has some wondering whether a candidate for the Board of Trustees is sending the wrong message on social media. Her video is called "How to Be Sexy."It's been viewed more than a million times, but now it's getting serious scrutiny as the self-described non-traditional candidate is running for school board trustee. Watch the full interview with Danielle Ford in the video player at the end of this story."I initially searched for the videos because I started hearing other employees discussing it and saying they were kind of concerned," said Elena Rodriguez, CCSD Student Services Division. Elena Rodriguez has worked for the district for decades. She's an outspoken advocate for change and accountability and regularly attends and speaks at school board meetings."As difficult as it is for women to climb the ladder of administration and so forth, and the issues that we've had in the past with employees being accused of sexual harassment and discrimination and so forth, I think it sends the wrong message," Rodriguez said.Danielle Ford isn't shying away from her videos, but she does want to explain them. "As far as that particular video and the messaging of sexiness, I very much believe in empowering women to love their bodies and to be proud of who they are."Danielle dropped out of high school when she became pregnant at age 17 and got her G.E.D. She says this video and others posted on her Young Moms Club website are designed to reach out to other teen moms who face the same stigma and challenges she did when she was a CCSD student.Getting that message out is a serious effort for Ford. Drawing from her own personal experience she takes on the meaning of teen motherhood in the TedX talk from 2013."If we can offer support and encouragement to these girls rather than criticism and judgment, then we can all positively affect the lives of over 10 million people."Drawing from her marketing experience, Danielle says she has to be creative to ensure teen moms get her message. "And although I wouldn't use that same tagline and picture if I'm talking to different people, it worked!  Because that video itself has over a million views.  And it brought you here," Ford added.Danielle's message to feel confident and powerful at any age as a woman is strong. But the context of that video ("How to Be Sexy") is how to get and keep a man. Some are questioning if that's a good message to send to young girls. According to Ford, "Girls do want that! We all do! We all want a partner."Though she posted these videos years before knowing she'd run for public office, she stands behind them all. Including a video entitled "Why I Let My 10-Year-Old Daughter Date." But as you'll hear in the video below, that "date" was really just a family outing to Chuck E. Cheese.Ford said, "I feel like it's a really good thing to teach her now what a date is and how to be treated by boys."She also has a video on "How to Get a Boyfriend... It's Seriously Just Like Shopping.""When you watch the videos, the common theme is that we need to empower kids instead of criticizing them for having thoughts or whatever it is," Ford added.But Rodriguez says there's a better way to empower young women. "For example, towards education--higher education--technical schools. There are many other ways to empower women versus just talking about how you can be sexy."Long-time Trustee Carolyn Edwards, who's terming out of the spot Ford is running for, says trustees must live up to a higher standard and that includes social media.Regarding her "How to Be Sexy" video, Danielle told us, "I wouldn't make that video--based on what I've heard--again, but I'm also not going to take it down."In fact, she's got a link to her Young Moms Club videos on her candidate website.
