At the same time, Walmart raised the age for gun purchases from 18 to 21. Kroger followed suit, ending all sales of guns and ammunition in its 45 Fred Meyer stores in the Pacific Northwest last March, citing declining consumer demand for firearms. The grocer had earlier stopped selling guns to people under 21 and pulled sales of magazines featuring "assault rifles."Over the last month, Walmart in particular has faced pressure to stop selling guns after 22 people were shot and killed by a white supremacist inside a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas.In its statement, Kroger said it would be "respectfully asking" that customers no longer openly carry guns in its stores, except for authorized law enforcement officers. But even with so much responsibility as the newly appointed police chief, Woolford says he couldn’t give up his crossing guard gig after six years. “Evidentially I have a knack for this, and I do it well,” he says. That's why the school got together this year to let Chief Woolford know they appreciate his commitment. They nominated him for a special recognition, and Woolford won! In Aedrin Albright's civics class at Chatham Central High School, the students are getting a real-life lesson in politics.The Bear Creek, North Carolina 10th graders are studying the impeachment process. And as their representatives hear testimony against President Donald Trump in Washington, they are debating whether he should face removal from office."Your job is to try to persuade your classmates in here to come to your side, to your understanding," Albright says to her class. "To see how you see this impeachment process."Earlier this week, the students divided into groups: Pro-impeachment on the right, anti-impeachment on the left, and "I Don't Know" in the middle. The pro-Trump group was by far the largest."I don't think it's my job as a teacher to influence them politically," Albright says. "I think it's my job to teach them the two sides, or the three sides or the four sides. So, it's not my job to say, `Yes, he should be impeached.' I've had them, probably, eight or nine times, 10 times: `What do you think?' And it's like, What do YOU think? And so it's, you know, I want them to tell me instead of me telling them."Bryce Hammer thinks the process is rigged and that Democrats are simply looking for any excuse to oust the Republican president."The Democrats have just been slamming Trump and trying to find every little thing, ever since he got into office," Hammer says. JPMorgan Chase, which is the parent company of Chase Bank, announced this week plans to make it easier for those with criminal pasts to be considered for employment with the company. As part of JPMorgan Chase's new initiative, the company will no longer ask employees to reveal if they have a criminal past during the application process. The company said this initiative allows for those with criminal backgrounds to receive the same consideration as any other applicant, when their background has no bearing on job requirements.The company said that in 2018, the company hired 2,100 people with criminal backgrounds, which represented 10 percent of all new hires for the year. JPMorgan Chase said those hired generally had been charged with low level offenses such as disorderly conduct, personal drug possession and DUI. These applicants were hired for positions in entry-levels jobs such as transaction processing, and lending and account servicing.“Business has a responsibility to partner with policy, business and community leaders to create an economy that works for more people. When someone cannot get their foot in the door to compete for a job, it is bad for business and bad for communities that need access to economic opportunity,” said JPMorgan Chase Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon in a statement. “Giving more people a second chance allows businesses to step-up and do their part to reduce recidivism, hire talented workers, and strengthen the economy.”The financial services company's decision to ban the box is part of a broader initiative to advocate for reforms to make it easier for those with criminal backgrounds to be part of the workforce.
