SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heat wave expected to bring record high temperatures to San Diego County this weekend will also bring a double whammy of wildfire danger and energy concerns to the area."We ramp up. We get ready," said Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser. "We'll have extra engines in place and extra personnel on duty."Cal Fire is already stretched thin, as they continue to help with wildfire efforts across the state. Already in 2020 there have been around 7,400 fires with 1.8 million acres burned so far.Last year at the same time, California had only seen 4,500 fires, burning 63,000 acres.Bortisser said prolonged drought created excess fuel."We're starting to see fires get into those areas where dead trees are, and we're seeing these huge fires burning throughout the state,” Bortisser said. There haven't been any major fires in San Diego County this year. Bortisser said people in San Diego can help lower the fire risk this weekend by putting off any activities that could create sparks."We want you do the right thing, but we want you do the right thing at the right time," said Bortisser. "This weekend is not the time to be out there with the power tools trying to clear weeds, chainsaws and things like that."Bortisser added that there is still some time Friday to clear defensible space around your home, so firefighters can protect it if a wildfire starts.Meanwhile, San Diego Gas & Electric is preparing for the surge of energy demand that comes with high temperatures. The California Independent Systems Operator (CAISO), which manages the state's electric grid, issued a Flex Alert for the weekend. They're telling people to avoid heavy energy usage between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. from Friday through Monday.SDG&E officials say that means San Diegans should not run major appliances like dishwashers or laundry machines during those hours. They also suggest setting air conditioners to 78 degrees to conserve energy."We are staying in very close touch with CAISO," said SDG&E spokesperson Helen Gao. "We're monitoring the weather and grid conditions, so we are ready to respond."At CAISO's command, SDG&E did temporary blackouts for some customers in August during the last heat wave. It was the first time in 20 years that CAISO implemented statewide rolling blackouts. If that needs to happen again this weekend, SDG&E says they'll spread the blackouts across the county so no one area is affected more than another."We'll go by group," said Gao. "You go through the first group, move to the second group, and after you've exhausted the entire list you go back to the top." 2617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new SANDAG report found that when it compared to the region's Caucasian population, Black and Hispanic communities are more than four times as likely to live in an area impacted by COVID-19 and unemployment. The report says more than two-thirds of the county's Black (67%) and Hispanic (70%) populations live in zip codes with higher than average unemployment rates. About half of Black (52%) and Hispanic (49%) San Diegans live in zip codes with higher than average COVID-19 cases as well.In comparison, the study says Caucasian (14%) and Asian (24%) populations are less impacted in both cases."As regional elected officials and leaders, it is important for us to think strategically about how to coordinate with the Black and Hispanic communities – and all communities in need – to determine which programs and policies can put in place to guide an equitable recovery as businesses begin to reopen and as people return to work or look for new jobs," said SANDAG Chair and Poway Mayor Steve Vaus.SANDAG says the most affected areas reside in the southern part of the county. The following zip codes have been most affected by COVID-19:91910 (Chula Vista N)91911 (Chula Vista S)91917 (Dulzura)91932 (Imperial Beach)91950 (National City)91977 (Spring Valley)91978 (Rancho San Diego)92020 (El Cajon)92021 (El Cajon)92102 (Golden Hill)92105 (City Heights)92113 (Logan Heights)92114 (Encanto)92115 (College)92139 (Paradise Hills)92154 (Nestor)92173 (San Ysidro)As of June 7, SANDAG reported the region's unemployment rate at 28.5%, or about 480,000 residents.SANDAG found that unemployment and the effect on industries have hit populations differently:Hispanic employees make up the largest percentage of the essential workforce in building cleaning services (65%), grocery and drug stores (44%), and childcare and social services (39%).Black employees account for more than 7% of the childcare and social services; 9% in trucking, warehouse, and postal service; and nearly 20% of public transit workers.Asian employees represent 22% of those working in the health care sector.White employees account for only 40% of the pool of workers in high-contact and essential occupations. To read SANDAG's full report, click here. 2245

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy sailor appeared in court Tuesday after authorities say he stole 20 hand grenades from a San Diego-based guided missile destroyer.Authorities say Gunner’s Mate Second Class Aaron Booker was taken into custody in Illinois.According to court documents, personnel assigned to the USS Pinckney discovered that 20 grenades disappeared from their storage crates in 2017.In April 2017, an off-duty law enforcement officer noticed a black backpack leaning against a guardrail on the side of the road along Interstate 15 in northwest Arizona. The bag was standard military issue with “GM2 BOOKER” handwritten on a tag inside the bag. The bag contained 18 of the grenades that were missing from the USS Pinckney.According to authorities, law enforcement is still searching for the two missing grenades. The complaint states that Booker acknowledged to investigators that he drove the same route before reporting to his duty station in March.“A backpack full of grenades on the side of the road is obviously extremely dangerous and could have had resulted in injuries or death,” said U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman said. “The theft of explosives is a very serious offense, particularly if it is carried out by an insider with access to military weapons and secrets.”Booker will appear for a detention hearing before being transferred to San Diego. The maximum penalty for the crime is 10 years in prison and a 0,000 fine.  1462
