CHENGDU, July 17 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 people were killed and 23 others remained missing after the worst rainstorm of this year lashed Sichuan Province Thursday night, the provincial flood control authorities said Saturday.The victims were killed by mountain torrents, landslides, house collapses or other rain-triggered disasters, according to Sichuan's flood control and drought relief headquarters.The rain forced the Shuangliu International Airport in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, to close Friday, affecting more than 100 flights and at least 10,000 passengers.The rain stopped in Chengdu Saturday and the airport was working around the clock to handle a record 640 flight landings and takeoffs.Many Chinese regions have reported casualties and losses caused by the rain.Hubei Province has seen 59 people dead and four missing by Saturday since heavy rains began to hit many regions on July 3, which incurred 8.92 billion yuan in economic losses.Shaanxi Province has reported four deaths since Thursday when downpours began to hit 13 counties and forced the evacuation of 260 people.The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River, China's longest, raised water discharge speed again Saturday to save dam space for another round of rainfall coming in two or three days.The Three Gorges navigation administration said Saturday that it will close the ship lock if the floods gush in at a speed of up to 45,000 cubic meters per second.At least 146 people had been confirmed dead and 40 are missing in continuous rainstorms and consequent floods, reportedly worst in years in some regions, according to the Civil Affairs Ministry.
BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China strongly opposes a declaration issued by the European Union on a Chinese human rights case, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here Sunday.Qin made the remarks in response to a question on China's attitude towards the EU declaration.The EU said in its declaration that it regrets the decision of the higher people's court of Sichuan Province to confirm the sentence of Tan Zuoren to five years in prison for "subversion of state power."It also appeals to the Chinese government to release Tan unconditionally.Tan Zuoren, a former magazine editor, was sentenced in February on the charge of inciting subversion of state power. This week, the Sichuan provincial higher people's court upheld Tan's five-year prison term.Qin said, China's justice department handled the case independently according to the Chinese law.The EU declaration has interfered in China's judicial affairs," Qin said. "China firmly opposes and is strongly dissatisfied over it."Qin hoped the EU would respect China's judicial sovereignty and safeguard the overall situation of Sino-EU relations.

URUMQI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 380 Chinese nationals had returned home aboard Chinese chartered flights as of Tuesday night from southern Kyrgyzstan where ethnic clashes have left some 170 people dead.The Chinese government has sent four chartered planes to bring home nationals including business people and students in Kyrgyzstan. Three chartered planes dispatched on Monday and Tuesday have returned and the fourth one left at 9:37 p.m. Tuesday an airport in Urumqi, capital of northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, for Osh of Kyrgyzstan to fly home more Chinese nationals.More than 600 Chinese nationals living around Osh have been sent to the city's airport with help from the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese embassy in Kyrgyzstan. BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of people gathered at the Tian'anmen Square in central Beijing early Sunday morning to watch a national flag hoisted to full height and then lowered to half-mast, mourning victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China's Zhouqu County one week ago.A flag at half-mast is also seen at Xinhuamen, the main entrance of Zhongnanhai, the headquarters of the Communist Party of China and the central government, as part of the one-day national mourning.The State Council announced Saturday that Chinese flags across the country and at overseas embassies and consulates would be lowered to half-mast Sunday to mourn the victims of the devastating mudslide.Public entertainment will be suspended Sunday in a show of mourning, said the announcement by the State Council, China's cabinet.The mudslide hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southern Gansu Province, on Aug. 8, leaving 1,239 people dead and 505 missing.Soon after Sunday midnight, front pages of Chinese websites turned to black and white, in a show of mourning.Public recreational activities, such as movies, karaoke, and on-line entertainment including games and music are set to be suspended Sunday, according to an urgent circular issued by the Ministry of Culture.Mourning ceremonies will also be held Sunday in Zhouqu County and Lanzhou, capital city of Gansu.
