SINGAPORE, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew met with visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong here on Saturday.     During the meeting, Liu said that China-Singapore relations have developed rapidly, and cooperations in various fields between the two countries have made great achievements.     She said that the friendly and mutually beneficial cooperations between the two countries have shown great foresight and have been advancing with times.     "The Suzhou Industrial Park has set a successful example for economic and technological cooperations between China and foreign countries. The Tianjin Eco-City, construction of which started last year, unveiled a new chapter for bilateral cooperations in sustainable development and environmental protection fields. The bilateral trade and economy relations have entered a new stage with the China-Singapore Free Trade Agreement coming into effect this year," Liu said.     Liu noted that the all-round development of the China-Singapore relationship is conducive to the two peoples and promoting prosperity and stability in the region.     "Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who is a key founder of the China-Singapore relationship, has devoted enduring effort for the friendship between the two countries." Liu said.     China highly values its ties with Singapore, and is willing to push bilateral cooperations in all fields and of various levels into a new stage, Liu added.     Lee Kuan Yew said that the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries is beneficial to both countries and their peoples.     Singapore hopes that China will continue to prosper and develop, Lee said, adding that Singapore will join hands with China to boost bilateral relations.     Liu also met on Saturday with officials of the Chinese Embassy in Singapore, and representatives of Chinese students and scholars in the city state.     Liu started the three-day official visit to Singapore on Thursday at the invitation of the Singapore government.     During her stay here, Liu also met with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and witnessed the signing of a revised government-to-government Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on education cooperation between China and Singapore.

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China's political advisors were urged to brainstorm on economic development and offer suggestions as the nation copes with the impact of the global downturn.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), a political advisory body, made the call as the standing committee of the 11thCPPCC National Committee kicked off its sixth meeting Tuesday.     Jia said maintaining steady, relatively fast economic development and safeguarding social stability and harmony were the foremost tasks facing the government. He called on the participants to focus their four-day discussions on these themes and make valuable suggestions. BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-nine large and medium-sized Chinese steel producers reported 5.18 billion yuan (762.46 million U.S. dollars) in aggregate losses in the first four months, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said here Friday.     The 29 producers were among 72 surveyed by CISA, the association's vice chairman, Luo Bingsheng, said.     The 72 companies reported 575.59 billion yuan in revenue, down 18.9 percent year on year, Luo said. They paid 15.42 billion yuan in taxes, down 85.07 percent year on year, Luo said.     Losses were mainly caused by slumping domestic steel prices, Luo said.     Many producers have cut costs, and the production cost of steel dropped 13.75 percent in the first quarter, Luo said.

BRUSSELS, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The number of civilian deaths in Afghanistan went down by 39 percent in the first three months of 2009 compared to the same period a year before, NATO said on Wednesday.     NATO spokesman James Appathurai said 81 percent of the civilian deaths were caused by the Talilban-led insurgents and 19 percent by international troops in the first three months of 2009. He did not give the overall number of civilian deaths in this period.     A total of 1,240 civilians were killed in 2008 in Afghanistan and the Taliban and other militant groups were responsible for 80 percent of them, according to NATO counts. But the UN mission in Afghanistan said more than 2,100 civilians were killed last year.     "It is important to note that despite the increase in (the numbers of) international forces, efforts to reduce the numbers of civilian casualties are having an effect," said Appathurai.     He said NATO and the Afghan security forces will establish about three dozen joint coordination centers throughout the country by mid-summer to coordinate military support and security support for the presidential and provincial elections in August.     Four battalions of extra troops will be deployed by mid-summer to help secure the elections. The extra troops will stay long enough in case a presidential run-off is needed in early October, he said.
