But is it too early to get the shot?Nikki Price, director of pharmacy operations at Safeway grocery stores, says they’ve been offering the flu vaccine to customers for nearly two weeks now.In fact, Price says the vaccine is available around this time of year, every year. However, with flu season peaking in January, Price admits it’s still pretty early on in the season.So, does getting the shot early have benefits? We asked a doctor.“If you're over the age of 65, I don't recommend getting the flu shot right now,” says Dr. Lela Mansoori, with Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center. “I would recommend waiting until after September.”Dr. Mansoori says that's because the elderly, and babies under 6 months old, don’t have as strong an immune response to the vaccine, compared to younger people.“The protective effects imparted by the vaccine may not actually last as long and carry them out throughout the entire flu season,” says Dr. Mansoori.If you're under 65 years old, Dr. Mansoori says getting your flu vaccine now won't make much of a difference, because the vaccine should cover you all year.But no matter when you get the shot, just make sure you get it.“The flu shot will protect not only you, but your parents, your grandparents, your children, and it can prevent death,” says Dr. Mansoori. “So, I think it's very important to get the flu vaccine.”The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting your flu shot by the end of October. 1542

But the bill left some with a new concern.Black and Hispanic Democrats joined civil rights groups in warning that part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act could have deadly unintended consequences for students of color.The provision establishes a voluntary "guardian" program that allows personnel who meet certain criteria to carry firearms in schools?.Democrats in the Republican-controlled House and Senate fought unsuccessfully to remove the controversial provision from the bill, also known as SB 2076. In Louisiana, which the highest-ranked state for food insecurity for children and the fourth-ranked state in food insecurity for seniors, food banks are becoming more important than ever before.For grandmother Mary O'Neal, she's raising her 8-year-old grandson on her own. Without help from her local food bank, she said she doesn't know how they would get by.Her husband passed away a couple of years ago, which cut their fixed income in half. Since then, O'Neal said she's really had to save."I had to pick up, and we had to start doing things different," said O'Neal. That loss was made worse when a tornado ripped through their northeast Louisiana home."I said, 'You know, Lord, you’ve sent me through the biggest storm of my life. This is just another storm. You brought me through the other one, and you’re going to bring me through this one,'" she said.But O'Neal said she never imagined the storm coronavirus would bring right into her kitchen. Food was running short—not only for her, but for her diabetic grandson, so she visited The Care and Hope Ministry, a small church turned community food bank, for some help."For us, it’s more than just than a box of food," said Pam Walker, who runs the food distribution. "It’s relationships, it’s loving on people, it’s hope, hope in a time of despair."Hope is just what O'Neal needed, especially after her grandson's school, and several in the area, stopped sending home-packed lunches while students were doing remote learning."That was all cut out the last of June. They didn’t give any more lunches," said O'Neal. FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WCPO) -- A firefighter in Franklin Township, Ohio who posted a racial slur on his Facebook page saying he'd save a dog over a black person has resigned, according to The Journal-News.Tyler Roysdon submitted his resignation late Monday night, township officials told the newspaper, after his racially charged comment got him suspended on Sept. 12.Roysdon’s since-deleted Facebook post has made national news. He purportedly stated that, given the choice, he would save a dog before a black person -- posting “one dog is worth a million” and then using the N-word.Before his resignation, Middletown NAACP chapter president Dora Bronston called for Roysdon to be fired, saying a firefighter's job is "to be there for every person that calls on your help.""This person is 20 years old - apparently not mature enough to be a firefighter," Bronston said. "We trust those people with our lives to protect us, to keep us safe our families safe, and we don't want them to put us in harm's way."Without authority to fire Roysdon, Township Fire Chief Steve Bishop had placed Roysdon on indefinite suspension pending a disciplinary hearing. Township trustees had scheduled a disciplinary hearing for Roysdon for Sept. 27. 1297

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Florida appeals court has ruled that police violated the rights of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and others when they secretly video recorded them paying for massage parlor sex acts.The decision Wednesday by the 4th District Court of Appeal bars the tapes' use at trial and could deal a potentially deadly blow to the prosecution.The court decided that Kraft’s rights were violated under the 4th Amendment to the Constitution, which protects against unreasonable searches and seizures.
