MONT BELVIEU, Texas — A Texas judge has ruled a school district’s hair policy is discriminatory after two Black students were suspended for their dreadlocks. According to KTRK-TV, the decision from the judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas came late Monday. The policy was at the center of controversy after a senior at Barbers Hill High School was suspended in January. District officials said it wasn’t about race or that dreadlocks weren’t allowed, just that his in particular were too long. The student was told he could not return to school or walk at graduation unless he cut his hair. He argued that his dreadlocks were part of his Trinidadian heritage. He and another student filed grievances on Jan. 27, followed by a lawsuit. Last month, the school board voted not to change the policy. 833

MISSION BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - After five years of delays and construction, the Plunge Pool in Mission Beach is scheduled to re-open on June 1."There was a lot of I's to dot and T's to cross with this thing, so we've taken our time," explains Belmont Park General Manager Steve Thomas. "We've invested the capital to make sure that things are where we want them to be. It feels good to be involved in a project like that."In addition to rebuilding the pool, the new Plunge will include a state of the art fitness center, run by Fit Athletic Club. The pool, which opened in 1925, closed in 2014 in dire need of repairs. That process didn't begin until January of 2017 because of issues with the Coastal Commission and other government entities.Throughout construction, people in Mission Beach have been wondering when it will reopen while reminiscing of their time spent in the old Plunge."Our kids, we used to bring them here when they were little," says Sharon Delgadillo. She and her husband Henry walk by the Plunge while they exercise in Mission Beach and have stopped frequently to check on its progress. "It will be awesome that another generation can enjoy this pool too.""It's a piece of our history," says Mission Beach Town Council President Matthew Gardner. He says the management from Belmont Park and the Fit Athletic Club has done an excellent job at providing updates to the council at their monthly meetings. He was thrilled to hear they have an opening date set for June 1st."You better believe I'll be first in line to get a membership for the pool," says Gardner. The Fit is already selling memberships to the Club, which will include pool access. A manager says they're offering a /month special through the end of March.Meanwhile, Belmont Park management says the pool will have its own membership that people can buy if they don't want the full athletic club experience. Those will be sold as monthly or daily passes. Belmont Park is still working out the price points for that.Business owners around Mission Beach and Belmont Park also feel the pool will be a catalyst for more economic growth in the area. Gardner owns a beach rental store next to the pool and says he's already seen an increase of customers who ask about the pool."I built my rental shop where it is because of how much effort they put into the pool," he says.Belmont Park officials say the unique mix of a large pool near the beach will bring in locals and tourists."It's going to be right up there next to Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo," says Thomas of how popular he thinks the Plunge will be when it re-opens. "It's a destination that San Diegans will be proud to have in their neighborhood." 2701

MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL, S.D. (AP) — Speaking to a largely maskless crowd at Mount Rushmore, President Donald Trump says protesters have waged “a merciless campaign to wipe out our history” amid demonstrations against racial injustice and police brutality. The sharp rebuke in a pre-holiday address Friday to mark the nation’s independence follows weeks of nationwide protests following the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis. Some demonstrators have also destroyed or damaged Confederate monuments and statues honoring those who have benefited from slavery. Trump says, “This movement is openly attacking the legacies of every person on Mount Rushmore.""The radical ideology attacking our country advances under the banner of 'social justice.' But in truth, it would demolish both justice and society," Trump said. "They want to silence us. But we will not be silenced."Trump says he will establish a “National Garden of American Heroes,” which he is describing as “a vast outdoor park that will feature the statues of the greatest Americans who ever lived.”Trump made the announcement as he opened the Fourth of July weekend with a speech and fireworks at the iconic Mount Rushmore. He led into the announcement by paying tribute to a litany of American icons, from political figures like Ulysses S. Grant and Frederick Douglass to entertainers like Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. The executive order released Friday by the White House says the garden will feature statues of several presidents as well as other historic notables, including Davy Crockett, Amelia Earhart, Billy Graham, Harriet Tubman and Orville and Wilbur Wright. 1664

NEAR CALIENTE, Nevada — Two single-engine planes collided Thursday afternoon while trying to contain a wildfire near Caliente, Nev., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.KTNV in Las Vegas, reports the collision occurred at about 1 p.m. MT between two Air Tractor AT8T airplanes. They were deployed to help battle the Bishop Fire, burning about 17 miles from Caliente and more than two hours northeast of Las Vegas.Officials say one person was aboard each aircraft at the time of the crash, and the Bureau of Land Management later confirmed the pilots died in the collision.“We offer our sincere condolences to the families of the two pilots and to all those working with the BLM Nevada Ely District,” said BLM Nevada State Director Jon Raby.Ground and aerial resources continued to take on the Bishop Fire in Rainbow Canyon as of Thursday afternoon, with the blaze approximately 500 acres. The airplanes involved are used to support firefighters on the ground and can deliver up to 800 gallons of fire retardant and operate in areas where larger air tankers cannot, according to the BLM. 1106

More studies seem to indicate there is some connection between a person’s severity of COVID-19 symptoms and their blood type. However, experts agree more research is needed and these studies do not allow people with certain blood types to disregard pandemic safety precautions. The two latest studies, one from Denmark and one from Canada, both appear to show that people with blood type O may be slightly less vulnerable to COVID-19 and have a reduced chance of getting severely ill.In the Danish study, researchers looked at more than 7,400 people who tested positive for COVID-19. Of those, 38.4 percent had blood type O, while other research indicates that blood type makes up about 41.7 percent of the population. In the Canadian study, they looked at the length of hospital stays for 95 people critically ill with the coronavirus. They found the portion of patients who needed mechanical ventilation was higher in those with blood type A or AB when compared with a group of patients with blood type O or B.Researchers also found the blood type A or AB group had longer stays in the intensive care unit, a median of 13.5 days, compared to the other group with blood type O or B who had a median of 9 days."I don't think this supersedes other risk factors of severity like age and co-morbities and so forth,” Dr. Mypinder Sekhon, who is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Critical Care Medicine and Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia told CNN."If one is blood group A, you don't need to start panicking. And if you're blood group O, you're not free to go to the pubs and bars."Researchers say this information could be used in some way in regard to treatment of COVID-19. Both studies were published in the journal Blood Advances this week.Previous studies have indicated similar results in patients with blood type O.In July, a study looking at 1,600 patients in Spain and Italy showed slightly higher rates of severe respiratory failure in patients with blood type A compared to those with blood type O.Also this summer, the genealogy website 23andMe.com released data they collected from 750,000 participants who identified they have tested positive for COVID-19.“Individuals with O blood type are between 9-18% percent less likely than individuals with other blood types to have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the data,” a company statement said at the time. 2425
