Doctors warn that a measles outbreak could occur following the COVID-19 pandemic due to a persistent decline in regular doctor's visits.Doctors at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, have noticed that many families are not bringing children in for regular checkups during the pandemic. "That puts us all at risk of having an outbreak of that illness when we get back together again."According to the World Health Organization, at least 93% of the population needs to get the measles vaccine to reach herd immunity.Researchers have found that vaccine rates have dropped as low as 70% in some places in Ohio, which raises concern for a potential measles outbreak.Typically, kids follow a type of "vaccine schedule" throughout their childhood. But many families have put vaccines for their children off amid the COVID-19 pandemic.Doctors say it's not too late to get those shots."If you're delayed in getting the measles vaccine, that's OK," Bode said. "Still come in and get it because it will protect you from the day you start to get it. So really, the only consequence would be that time that you are unprotected."Anyone who is uncomfortable about stepping into a doctor's office should know that efforts are in place to make it a safe space for everyone. Dr. Christina Blasey Ford has been nominated for a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Distinguished Alumna Award for "speaking truth to power" by going public with sexual assault allegations against then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh."What Dr. Blasey Ford did on September 27, 2018 was something that was extraordinary in how ordinary it was: she told the truth about a sexual assault she experienced when she was fifteen years old at the hands of Judge Brett Kavanaugh," wrote UNC English professor Dr. Jennifer Ho in the letter nominating Ford, speaking about the California professor's testimony last month in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.Ford, who graduated from UNC with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1988, accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a house party when the two were in high school. Kavanaugh has denied all allegations against him.Both Ford and Kavanaugh testified before the committee, prompting a weeklong FBI investigation and hundreds of activist protesters on Capitol Hillbefore the Senate confirmed Kavanaugh by?a 50-48 vote Saturday afternoon."Dr. Blasey Ford giving her testimony, speaking truth to power, was an inspiration for so many of us," Ho wrote. Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit confirmed on his Facebook page on Monday that he was rescued as Hurricane Maria hit his small island nation.  Hurricane Maria made landfall just before 10 p.m. ET on the island of Dominica with top winds of 160 MPH. Skerrit's roof was one of many that were ripped off as Maria came on shore. "My roof is gone. I am at the complete mercy of the hurricane. House is flooding," Skerrit said just before being rescued. Hurricane Maria is the second Category 5 hurricane to strike the Caribbean in the last two weeks. Hurricane Maria is following a similar path as Hurricane Irma, which devastated parts of the Caribbean before coming on shore in Florida on Sept. 10.Local radio reports said that parts of Dominica are flooded, and there has been roof failure at a local hospital. Dominica has a total population of 73,000 residents.  934

During an interview with ABC News on Thursday, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that wearing goggles can offer an additional layer of protection against the coronavirus.Fauci’s suggestion was not an official recommendation, but the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, explained why eyes can also be responsible for coronavirus infections."You have mucosa in the nose, mucosa in the mouth, but you also have mucosa in the eye," Fauci said. "Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces. So if you have goggles or an eye shield you should use it."Fauci said his suggestion might become an official recommendation for the public at some point, much how like masks became an official recommendation in April. The CDC, however, has included eye protection in some of its sets of guidance for healthcare workers, depending on the circumstance.Last month, the Lancet published a study funded by the World Health Organization that indicated that wearing eye protection decreases the risk of catching the virus. The study suggests that wearing eye protection resulted in a 78% reduction in infection; infection via the ocular route might occur by aerosol transmission or self-inoculation, the study said. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- El Cajon could become the first city in San Diego County to ban the sale of vaping products. That comes as the CDC investigated hundreds of vaping-related illness. In total, there have been 22 vaping-related deaths confirmed across the U.S., including two in California. Public health officials have been asking people to stop vaping until they get answers. Tuesday, the City Council will vote to decide if vaping will be banned in the city of El Cajon. Some councilmembers say they want a complete ban on the sale of vaping products and flavored juices. Investigators still haven’t found the root cause of the illnesses, but did find that 78 percent of people injured reported using THC containing products. 744
