SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Ex-Poway Unified School District Superintendent John Collins pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor financial disclosure charge and was immediately sentenced to five years probation in a plea deal in a case in which he was accused of misappropriating more than 5,000 in public funds.The Poway Unified School District and Collins also reached a settlement in a civil lawsuit related to the allegations, which is expected to be finalized Wednesday night. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a 6-3 vote, the San Diego City Council today rejected a proposed .5 million sale of the property holding the city's only roller skating rink, Skateworld.The proposal called for the city to sell the parcel of land to big-box store developer Pacifica Companies, much to the chagrin of Skateworld supporters who called on the council to either collect more community feedback before approving the sale or reject it outright in favor of renovating the rink.Skateworld advocates collected thousands of signatures in an effort to save the skating rink, including a change.org petition that garnered more than 19,000 supporters. "I really appreciate that residents of every council district came to speak today about the community that Skateworld fosters,'' said City Councilwoman Barbara Bry. "I think there's so few family friendlyopportunities in that community that it's really essential.''The skating rink was developed under a state redevelopment agency more than 40 years ago. When Gov. Jerry Brown dissolved the redevelopment agencies in 2011, he ordered that their assets be liquidated to the highest bidder.The city put the property up for bid last year and named Pacifica the recommended buyer after three rounds of receiving offers for the site. Supporters of the sale, including City Councilman Scott Sherman, who represents the district Skateworld is in, argued the city's hands were tied and it should honor Pacifica's bid. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was stabbed in the hands and pistol whipped in North Park Saturday after refusing to carry drugs from Mexico into the United States, police said.The victim, 49, was pressured by six friends earlier in the day to transport drugs from Mexico across the border, but he refused, said Officer Tony Martinez of the San Diego Police Department.They saw him later at 3 a.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of 30th Street, Martinez said."They got into a confrontation with him, and during the confrontation the victim was stabbed in both hands and pistol whipped," the officer said.The victim received a laceration to both hands and a laceration to the top of the head from being pistol whipped, Martinez said.The main suspect was a man known to the victim, he said. The other suspects were three men and two women. They all fled in a white Kia SUV with Mexico plates.Mid City Division detectives will be handling the investigation. 950

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman attacked her father with a metal pipe during an argument today, according to police.The attack happened around 1:45 p.m. at a home on Lenox Drive near Elwood Avenue in Emerald Hills, according to San Diego Police Officer Sarah Foster.It started as a verbal altercation before the 31-year-old woman picked up the pipe and hit her father several times in the face and head, Foster said.The man had to be taken to a hospital and his daughter was arrested. 491

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian Friday on Interstate 5 at the southern end of Balboa Park.The traffic fatality occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, near state Route 163 in downtown San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol.It was unclear why the pedestrian, who died at the scene, was on the interstate, CHP public-affairs Officer Salvador Castro said.The fatality left three northbound lanes blocked in the area and tangled traffic for miles through late morning. 544
