Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao presides over the second plenary meeting of the State Council, or the Cabinet, in Beijing, capital of China, Jan. 19, 2009Last year was an unusual year for the country, especially the second half of 2008 when the government unveiled a series of measures to counter the negative impacts of the global financial crisis.     "These measures have been proved prompt, correct and effective," Wen said.     "This year is the most difficult year for China's economic development so far this century," he said.     Efforts should be made to enhance the implementation of the government's economic stimulus package and measures announced to boost the country's major industries, he said.     The Chinese government has announced boosting measures for the steel and auto industries, and is planning measures for eight other major industries.     Wen urged departments concerned to speed up work on the making of these boosting measures.     He called for more efforts on agricultural production during the winter and the coming spring, and said favorable policies for farmers should be firmly implemented.     He also called for efforts to promote stable and relatively fast industrial development.     Enterprises should be encouraged to intensify internal management, reduce operating cost, expand markets and stabilize employment, he said, and small and medium-sized enterprises should be given more support.     Work should be done to ensure service and commodity supply during the upcoming Spring Festival as well as boost consumption in both rural and urban regions, he said.     The government should work to maintain stable growth in trade, Wen said, underlining the need to expand emerging markets and improve the quality of exported goods.     Wen also stressed the need for work to ensure the country's financial stability and safety. The government should properly deal with changes brought about by the global financial crisis and maintain sound operation of the banking sector, he said.     More attention should be given to implement the central government's policy to improve people's living standards and solve problems concerning people's interests, he said.     He urged governments at all levels to attach great importance to boosting employment, help people who had difficulties in life, and ensure production safety and social stability.

 CAIRO, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Mahmoud Mohamed Nazef, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang arrived here on Wednesday afternoon for an official visit to Egypt.     "I believe my visit will promote the China-Egypt strategic partnership of cooperation to a higher level," Li said in a written speech upon arrival at the airport.     He noted that China attaches great importance to developing relations with Egypt and is ready to make joint efforts with the Egyptian side to consolidate the traditional friendship, deepen the strategic partnership of cooperation and enhance coordination in international and regional issues with Egypt. BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- China had "unprecedented dynamic interaction" with the rest of the world in 2008, receiving some 180 heads of state or government, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Sunday.     Yang made the remarks when addressing a new year reception in the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. State Councilor Dai Bingguo and more than 400 foreign diplomats and Chinese officials were also present.     Yang said the cooperation between China and the rest of the world was further consolidated and enhanced amid the natural disasters, Beijing Olympics as well as the international financial turmoil.     The year 2008 marks the 30th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up. UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, met with Susan Rice, the new U.S. ambassador to the world body, here on Monday afternoon, and they exchanged views on the Sino-U.S. relations and other world and regional issues of common concern, diplomatic sources said here Tuesday.     During the meeting, Rice briefed Zhang on the key points of the foreign policy of the Barack Obama administration, the sources said.     The two sides also exchanged views on the Sino-U.S. relations, and other international and regional issues of common concern. They agreed to strengthen their consultation on and cooperation in the affairs of the United Nations, the sources said.     The new U.S. ambassador made her UN debut on Monday by presenting her credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said Friday he hoped the United States and China would deepen mutually beneficial financial interdependence.     Carter said the financial crisis enabled closer ties between the United States and China and he hoped China would continue to buy U.S. government debt.     Carter, in China to attend events to mark the 30th anniversary of Sino-U.S. diplomatic ties, conveyed President-elect Barack Obama's message of his resolve to maintain sound bilateral relations.     Although China and the U.S. had different cultures, histories and political systems, they had much more in common, said Carter at a symposium marking the anniversary.     The United States attached great importance to U.S.-China relations, especially in coping with the challenge of global climate change and the financial crisis, he said.     He believed bilateral relations would continue to develop and improve in the next 30 years.     In Shanghai, Carter also attended the opening of a photo exhibition which showcased the 30-year course of China-U.S. relations.     The former president also voiced his confidence in the strong U.S. participation in the Shanghai World Expo to be held in 2010.
