Larry Scott, the commissioner of the Pac-12 Conference, said Thursday that a new coronavirus test that claims to provide fast and accurate results is a “major step” when it comes to allowing a football season.Last month, the Pac-12, along with the Big Ten and several other Division 1 FBS conference, decided to postpone the college football season. Meanwhile, two Division 1 FBS games were played on Thursday.Of the Power 5 conference, the ACC, SEC and Big 12 are all moving forward with a fall football season. The decision not to have a fall football season for the Big Ten and Pac-12 amid the coronavirus pandemic came with some backlash as parents, players and even President Donald Trump have pushed for the Pac-12 and Big Ten to change their decisions. And now they have a reason to change their mind.“This is a major step toward the safe resumption of Pac-12 sport competitions,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott. “The availability of a reliable test that can be administered daily, with almost immediate results, addresses one of the key concerns that was expressed by our medical advisory committee, as well as by student-athletes, coaches and others. At the same time, our partnership with Quidel, the industry leader in point-of-care antigen testing, will provide crucial research data that will benefit our members’ communities as well as the entire country.”The Pac-12 said that the Quidel tests are expected to reach Pac-12 athletic departments by the end of the fall. The conference says that having a reliable rapid coronavirus test was a key reason why the conference postponed the fall football season. The company claims to have results within 15 minutes and to be 96.7% accurate.According to The Athletic reporter Nicole Auerbach, Scott said he is hopeful that the Pac-12 could resume and align its football calendar with the Big Ten. The two conferences have long held a symbolic relationship through the Rose Bowl, although in recent years, the Rose Bowl is no longer exclusively held between the champions of the Big Ten and Pac-12. 2066

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV)-- A new article shows that wearing masks is even more critical than previously thought. UC San Diego researchers compiled several global studies that looked into how the coronavirus spreads and found that masks can help stop the spread of many aerosol particles. The idea of wearing masks has become a polarized issue in America. But Dr. Kim Prather, a distinguished professor at the UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography, says the science is clear."Masks do filter things, and filtering does reduce the spread of disease. That we know," Dr. Prather said. She and her colleagues released a new article compiling the latest COVID-19 studies around the world. Sneezing and coughing release large spit particles up to 26 feet, so that is clearly a point of concern. But Dr. Prather says we also need to focus on the invisible aerosols that can float around for hours, from asymptomatic virus carriers. "They don't have a fever, they're not coughing, they're not sneezing," Dr. Prather said. "But when they're talking, they can produce thousands of aerosols out in their breath, and infect people for days."That is why she reiterates that wearing masks is imperative."You wear a mask not to protect yourself. You wear a mask because you're being thoughtful and protecting other people," Dr. Prather said. One of the studies compares COVID-19 numbers between Taiwan and New York, which share a similar population. While New York had more than 353,000 positive cases and 24,000 deaths by the time Dr. Prather's paper was published, Taiwan only saw around 440 cases and seven deaths. Dr. Prather attributes Taiwan's drastically low numbers, partly to the quickly enacted masking orders. "Taiwan never shut down. They just wore masks," Dr. Prather said. So what kind of facial masks are most efficient? Dr. Prather says one that fits your face properly would protect you the best. Tightly knit, multi-layered cloth masks are good to rewash and reuse. Bandanas can leave many gaps between the contours of your face, which is why it may not be as effective in blocking out particles. Whatever the style, Dr. Prather says that you see the mask moving up and down while breathing, it is a sign that it is working. The more we protect ourselves now, the quicker we can return to normal. "We can get back to a functioning society if we wear masks," Dr. Prather said. "Until tests come in to play or a vaccine comes into place, it'll buy us time, and we can reduce the spread if we take this seriously."Dr. Prather says that while masks do not block 100% of aerosol particles, it is much better to block some than none. 2638

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. "The extreme beauty of our hillsides that drew attention from around the world is now diminishing quickly, and our residents sure are eager for things to get back to normal."The season was highlighted by beautiful photos of flowers, but marred with reports of tourists destroying foliage and trails and clogging roadways to see the spectacle. Leaders of the world’s most powerful nations wrapped up the Group of 20 summit on Sunday, vowing to spare no effort to protect lives and ensure affordable access to COVID-19 vaccines for all people. The two-day summit of heads of state was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed at least 1.38 million people globally, with the world’s highest death tolls recorded in seven of the G-20 countries. The virus has wiped out hundreds of millions of jobs globally and plunged millions into extreme poverty. The virus “revealed vulnerabilities in our preparedness and response and underscored our common challenges,” the G-20 said in a final statement that focused heavily on battling the coronavirus, enhancing environmental protections and supporting the global economy. The group vowed “to spare no effort to protect lives.”The G-20, which includes the U.S., India, China, the U.K., France, Germany, Japan and others, also stressed the importance of global access to COVID-19 vaccines, drugs and tests.“We will spare no effort to ensure their affordable and equitable access for all people, consistent with members’ commitments to incentivize innovation,” the statement said. The G-20 expressed support for efforts like COVAX, an international initiative to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to countries worldwide. The U.S., however, has declined to join under President Donald Trump.German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters Sunday in Berlin after the virtual summit that Germany had given financial support to the COVAX initiative, but that more money was needed. The G-20 statement did not directly address an urgent appeal by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who said billion in additional investment is needed for mass manufacturing, procurement and delivery of new COVID-19 vaccines around the world, including billion immediately. There is also concern that countries such as Britain, the U.S., France and Germany have directly negotiated deals with pharmaceutical companies, meaning that the vast majority of the world’s vaccine supply next year is already reserved.“Fortunately, there’s now hope for vaccines,” Merkel said, adding that “it is important that not only Europe secures vaccines, as the European Union is doing now, but ... that it is important for the entire world” to have access to vaccines. She said it is important that COVAX starts negotiating with the producers of potential vaccines based on the money it already has, but that she was somewhat worried those negotiations had not happened yet.Saudi Arabia’s King Salman rounded out the summit, saying the G-20′s final statement “succeeded in sending out a message of hope and reassurance to our citizens and all people around the world.”“This is what the world has been expecting from us. This achievement today is a culmination of our joint efforts throughout this challenge-fraught year,” the Saudi monarch said.Saudi Arabia presided over the G-20 this year and was host of the virtual summit, which was originally intended to be held in-person in Riyadh before the pandemic. During the Saudi king’s speech, small video squares showed the leaders of Germany, France, the U.K., Canada, South Korea, China, India and South Africa watching the final remarks. Trump participated in the summit with prerecorded speeches, but was not in attendance for the virtual summit’s conclusion. It appeared all G-20 countries agreed to the full content of the final statement, with the exception of Turkey, which was due to give a press conference later Sunday explaining further.Delegates from the G-20 had convened virtually throughout the year to discuss the coronavirus, agreeing to suspend debt payments for the world’s poorest nations until mid-2021 to allow those countries to focus their spending on health care and social support programs. The G-20 called on private lenders to join the effort.Already, 46 countries have requested to benefit from the debt suspension initiative, amounting to .7 billion in debt referral. The U.N. secretary general, however, has called on the G-20 to extend debt repayments through the end of 2021 and expand the scope to middle-income countries in need.G-20 countries are allowing low-income countries with unsustainable debts to apply for permanent debt relief on a case-by-case basis. In final remarks at the summit, Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte laid out his country’s objectives for the G-20 next year as it assumes the rotating presidency from Saudi Arabia.“The existential threat, represented by climate change, soil degradation and by the decline of global biodiversity, has brought us to a crossroads, which will determine if we are able to save our planet and construct a sustainable future,” Conte said.Conte said the pandemic will continue to be at the top of the group’s agenda and reiterated his support for universal access to vaccines.___Associated Press writers Kirsten Grieshaber in Berlin and Frances D’Emilio in Rome contributed to this report. 5010
