More companies are trying four-day work weeks.Some are doing it to avoid laying people off during the pandemic. Others say it creates a better work-life-balance with employees at home.Elephant Ventures is a software company that started testing employees working four 10-hour days. It's a move to help employee morale and parents dealing with childcare and remote learning.“I think you still have the age-old conversation of if it's 40 hours compressed into four days, you still have how much productivity are you actually getting in a 10-hour workday,” said Barb Holland, an Human Resources Knowledge Advisor with SHRM.Productivity has gone up in other countries, like at Microsoft in Japan, when they tried a four-day work-week last year.Zip Recruiter has seen an increase in job postings that mention four-day work weeks this year.“If you're not wanting to lose your good workers or you're wanting to make sure they're not looking elsewhere for those places that are hiring, you have to be thinking about, ‘how do I retain my good staff,’” said Holland. “I don't want to lose them and flexibility I think is going to be a key piece of retaining staff in the future.”That HR expert says flexibility could be key to attracting new workers in the future.Elephant Ventures plans to test its new work week this month. Mortgage rates are likely to set record lows in August for the third month in a row.The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.18% APR in July, a record low in NerdWallet’s mortgage rate survey. And the economy has been sputtering for months as the COVID-19 pandemic sent millions of people to the ranks of the unemployed.The U.S. economy shrank at a 32.9% annual rate from April through June, the Commerce Department reported July 30. The slowdown happened because businesses, state and local governments, and consumers cut their spending. Consumers cut way back on clothing and footwear purchases, among other items.? They have met the qualifications to refinance their mortgages at record-low interest rates.Home sellers have thrived in many housing markets, as home prices have risen despite surging unemployment, an unusual combination. Home resale prices were up 3.5% in June, compared with a year before, according to the National Association of Realtors. One reason for the increase in prices: Fewer homes were for sale because of social distancing. The reduced supply of for-sale houses led to increased competition among buyers, pushing prices upward.Homeowners must catch up on missed paymentsBut the COVID-19 recession may end up harming more homeowners than it helps.In late July, 3.9 million homeowners were using mortgage relief plans that allow borrowers to miss payments or make partial payments if they have been affected by COVID-19, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Eventually, those homeowners will be expected to catch up on their missed payments. Some homeowners’ incomes were permanently reduced. They may find it difficult to make good on their past-due payments.Renters could be out in the coldRenters could end up suffering the most. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey, 18% of renters, or 13.3 million households, didn’t pay their full rent in June. And in mid-July, one-third of renters surveyed, representing 23.8 million households, told the bureau that they had no confidence or slight confidence that they would make their next rent payment.Congress, along with state and local governments, imposed limits on evictions early in the pandemic, but some of those protections have expired. On top of that, 0 extra weekly unemployment insurance payments were set to expire at the end of July, and as the clock ticked down to the August recess, Congress was still negotiating an extension.Even with tenant protections in place, about 4% of renters have received an eviction notice or have been threatened with eviction since March, according to data from the Urban Institute’s Coronavirus Tracking Survey.When eviction bans expire, tenants have few options:Apply for emergency rental assistance, if the state or city offers it and still has money.Reach a repayment agreement with the landlord. Under such an agreement, tenants pay extra each month until they catch up with the past-due rent. But a repayment plan requires the tenant to have the money and the landlord to be willing to make a deal. Neither of those is a sure thing.If it’s not swamped with similar requests, the local legal aid service might be able to step in and help negotiate a deal with the landlord.? MLB and the league’s player union held negotiations this week, days after a contentious series of statements between the league and union indicated the 2020 season is in peril.The league and players are working on a plan to begin the 2020 season after it was postponed by the spread of the coronavirus. With most professional sports leagues coming back this summer, MLB has yet to formalize a plan for resumption.MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said that a new set of proposals have been forwarded to the players.The tone from Manfred on Wednesday differed from earlier in the week.“We left that meeting with a jointly developed framework that we agreed could form the basis of an agreement and subject to conversations with our respective constituents,” Manfred said. “I summarized that framework numerous times in the meeting and sent Tony a written summary today. Consistent with our conversations yesterday, I am encouraging the Clubs to move forward and I trust Tony is doing the same.”Earlier on Wednesday, reports surfaced that the league and players have finalized a deal, but those reports appeared to be premature as the MLBPA said that no agreement has been made.At odds is the number of games to be played, and whether players will be paid a full prorated amount for those games. MLB said that based on an agreement between the leagues and players days after the league suspended Spring Training, players would only be paid a full prorated salary if games were held in front of fans. The explosion, which was felt across much of Middle Tennessee, injured at least three and caused extensive damage to multiple buildings.The CFMT said grants from the Nashville Neighbors Fund will be made to nonprofits providing services for both the immediate and long-term needs arising from the explosion.“Our work helps free nonprofits up to concentrate on delivering vital services while we 'connect generosity with need' and our community sets out to rebuild.
