PHOENIX (KNXV) - Imagine getting the greatest gift of your life and then suddenly having it ripped away. It's what the Gateway Academy in Phoenix is feeling right now. The K-12 school for high functioning students with autism just had an important gift taken away. It's an empty field right now but the plan was for Gateway Academy to remove all of the bushes and gravel to make room for a brand new adaptive playground. The cost of entire project would be picked up by a very generous donor."We thought we had found an angel who understood the population and who's ready to give generously," said Robin Sweet, the school's executive director. "Not so much."That donation, ,000. How much the school has seen of that money? Nothing."Before I signed the purchase order I called him again just to make sure," said Sweet. That donor backed out. Now the school is left with a massive bill, a playground that's sitting in storage on pallets and students who are disappointed."Guess what,  don't see anything out here," said Joseph, an eighth grader at Gateway.  "It's not just to have fun. It would really help us," said Joseph."It's instrumental in their well-being and mental and physical health and then to say, sorry - just kidding?" said Sweet. The school won't identify the donor but Sweet does have a message for the man. "Shame on you. It's not about me but it's about the kids. That's terrible."The school has its hands tied and can't take legal action against the donor. The school is holding a fundraiser at a trampoline park and a?GoFundMe page has also been set up to help the school.  1615

Passengers might be allowed to keep liquids and laptops in their carry-on bags at airport security checkpoints in the United States if screening technology being tested at select airports is widely adopted. The Transportation Security Administration announced plans Monday to test computed tomography (CT) scanners for carry-on bags, with up to 40 units expected to be in place at US airports by the end of 2018.The X-ray scanning equipment creates 3D images that can be analyzed on three axes for explosives and other threats. The CT technology is similar to that used for medical imaging. Current screening machines for carry-on bags generate 2D images."Use of CT technology substantially improves TSA's threat detection capability at the checkpoint," said TSA Administrator David Pekoske in a statement.CT technology testing started in 2017 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Boston's Logan International Airport. John F. Kennedy International Airport has also received a scanner.London's Heathrow is among international airports testing the 3D technology. An initial 15 units will be deployed within the next few months at the following US airports:Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI)Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)Houston Hobby Airport (HOU)Indianapolis International Airport (IND)John F. Police in Illinois have deemed a local man a hero after he raced to rescue a man from a burning vehicle on Sunday evening.According to the Aurora Police Department's Facebook page, a 57-year-old man rushed to the rescue after a single-car crash just after midnight on Saturday. Dash cam video from the crash shows the man dragging the driver away from the car by his legs as flames shoot out of the driver's side window.According to Aurora police, it was 58-year-old Jose Martinez who rushed out of his home to save the driver, a 34-year-old man. A second man, 29-year-old Devin Johnson, also helped by pulling the man away from the car.  "To say Jose's actions were heroic and brave are an understatement. Had he not taken immediate action, the driver would not have lived," the department wrote on Facebook. " Devin should also be commended for assuring the man was out of harm's way. Outstanding job, gentlemen." Patch Aurora reports that the driver was treated for burns and other non-life threatening injuries. He was charged with a DUI.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - R.J. Donovan State Prison houses some of California’s most infamous inmates but is now getting attention for testing innovative rehabilitation methods. One of the projects is an ambitious, 1,000-foot long mural scaling the concrete walls of part of the prison known as Echo Yard. It’s being spearheaded by inmates Erik and Lyle Menendez. The two gained notoriety in the 1990s for their highly publicized murder trial, when they were convicted of killing their wealthy parents in their Beverly Hills home. At trial, they told jurors it was motivated by years of sexual abuse from their father.READ: Donovan State Prison's 'Echo Yard' takes innovative approach to rehabilitation, reduce recidivismAfter being convicted, they spent 20 years apart in separate prisons. But in April of 2018, they were reunited at Donovan State Prison in Echo Yard. 10News got a glimpse at their life together behind bars. Lyle and Erik declined to be interviewed but showed off part of the mural project they’ve been involved in.The mural depicts landmarks across San Diego including Balboa Park, the Point Cabrillo lighthouse and the historic Mission San Diego de Alcala. The project came about thanks to help from Brahman Kyrie, a volunteer who had been running yoga and meditation classes in the prison. “There’s got to be consequences but there also has to be the love,” said Kyrie. She said the idea of the murals came from a conversation with the Menendez brothers.“I spoke to Lyle and Erik who had been thinking about the beautification,” she recalled.WATCH: WHAT IS THE ECHO YARDWith the help of volunteers from SDSU and with outside donations from Visions Quality Coatings and Encore Art Paint, they began the project in 2019.Echo Yard is classified as a “mixed” yard, bringing together inmates of different security levels on the premise that they will coexist peacefully in exchange for some freedoms.“I do it for therapy, it keeps me grounded,” said inmate David Armstrong about the mural project.“It’s giving me a peace of mind,” echoed Ruben Radillo, an inmate who will be getting out of prison at the end of February after a 25-year sentence.“Don’t be afraid of me,” he said. “I’m going to be a good neighbor, thanks to projects like this. Absolutely.” 2277
