SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirteen people overcoming a unique set of obstacles plan to conquer a 13.1-mile marathon this weekend.They're called the Lucky 13."It takes a lot of courage, and you've got to be really brave, even just to apply," said Paul Carey, the Lucky 13 Coordinator, and Head Coach.The Tri-City Medical Center program assists those who have had or are currently overcoming health obstacles to achieve their fitness goals. For six months, they're professionally trained and receive wellness support ahead of the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half-Marathon."Everything good I have in my life can be traced back to Lucky 13 and being part of that," said Carey, who was a participant years ago.For 30 years Carey felt trapped in his bipolar diagnosis.During that time, he was on heavy medications, had several psychiatric hospital stays, and underwent 50 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.Then he found the Lucky 13 program."It's an endless foundation of support that's just something really remarkable," said Carey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Postal Service will dedicate the Sally Ride Forever stamp to America’s first woman in space.The first-day-of-issue dedication ceremony will take place Wednesday at the University of California San Diego, where Dr. Sally Ride taught.After the ceremony, Sally Ride Science at UC San Diego will honor her with a 6:30 p.m. panel discussion on women in leadership.Ride dazzled the nation as a trailblazing astronaut, brilliant scientist, and dedicated educator.Her journey to space began in 1977 while she was finishing her Ph.D. in physics at Stanford University. She saw an article in the student newspaper saying NASA was seeking astronaut candidates, and for the first time, women were allowed to apply.Five years later, Ride became the first American woman to reach space when she launched in the Challenger for a six-day expedition.She was 32 at the time, making her the youngest American to go to space.After retiring from NASA in 1989, she took a job as a physics professor at UC San Diego and became the director of the university’s California Space Institute.Ride used her experiences in space to explain difficult physics concepts to her students.In 2001, she co-founded Sally Ride Science, a company dedicated to fostering interest in STEM fields among children, especially girls.Ride was honored for her contributions to science and space exploration with the NASA Space Flight Medal and the NCAA's Theodore Roosevelt Award. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted in favor of a proposal to purchase two city hotels and used them to help hundreds of homeless San Diegans.City leaders want to turn the Residence Inn hotels in Kearny Mesa and Mission Valley to be turned into permanent housing. The proposal was approved in a 9-0 vote.The hotels are price tagged at a combined 6.5 million. The hotels can house 400 people experiencing homelessness; residences of the properties would include people staying at the Convention Center as part of the Operation Shelter to Home, which started in April due to the coronavirus pandemic.Father Joe’s Villages will be providing services for the Kearny Mesa location, while People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) will provide services at the Mission Valley location. The services provided will include mental and behavioral health services, healthcare services, substance use services, and employment assistance.City leaders hope to get people moved in and the services running by the end of the year. 1058

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The woman killed after a loose dog on State Route 94 caused a chain-reaction crash has been identified.Grace Villar, 53, died Saturday after the Toyota Camry she was in was hit from behind by a Dodge pickup truck, according to a report by San Diego's Medical Examiner. Traffic in front of the Camry was stopped due to a loose dog in the highway.Villar was one of three people in the vehicle taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital following the crash.According to the California Highway Patrol, a Ford F-150 owned by the San Diego Humane Society was parked in the median of the highway to wrangle a loose dog, when the dog ran into traffic.Cars were forced to stop and some swerved in the process, including the car Villar was traveling in. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The wife of ex-NFL tight end Kellen Winslow II has filed for divorce, months after the former footballer was convicted of rape.Janelle Winslow filed documents for divorce on Aug. 30 in San Diego, according to records. The couple has been married for 13 years and have two children together.In June, Winslow was found guilty on three counts including rape, lewd conduct, and indecent exposure, stemming from accusations he raped three woman and exposed himself to two others.RELATED: Kellen Winslow Jr. tells 10News he's 'innocent' in rape caseThe jury, however, was deadlocked on eight other charges, including rape and kidnapping in connection with two other women.
