Facebook announced today it is removing hundreds of pages and accounts run by people in the U.S. who are spreading misinformation. The social media platform's staff identified 559 pages and 251 accounts, and among those is Right Wing News, which has more than 3 million followers, the New York Times reports. Left-wing pages identified in the group include the Resistance and Reverb Press (816,000 followers). It's the most domestic accounts and pages Facebook has removed, officials with the platform said. They violate the rules about online spam, and are financially motivated, according to the NY Times report.False narratives on social media were once known as something mostly done by Russian-linked operatives. It's now become something created more in the U.S., the Times said.Researchers said it's harder to root out false information that's from the U.S. than foreign countries. That's because it "mirrors genuine networks of Americans engaging in free speech online," the Times reports. 1003

Even though Jacob Walter Anderson was indicted on four counts of sexual assault, the ex-fraternity president won't spend a single day in prison.Instead, a plea agreement allowed the former Baylor University student to plead no contest to a lesser charge of unlawful restraint. If the 24-year-old successfully completes three years of deferred probation and pays a 0 fine, his criminal record will be wiped clean of the charge, and he won't have to register as a sex offender, CNN affiliate KWKT said. The plea agreement between Anderson's defense team and the McLennan County, Texas, district attorney's office infuriated the victim and her attorney."The evidence is incredible," Vic Feazell, the woman's attorney, told KWKT. "He nearly choked her to death. He raped her violently. He left her passed out in her own vomit -- the rape exam confirmed rape."The incident happened February 21, 2016, the woman said, according her victim impact statement posted on KWKT's website. She lambasted the court for accepting the plea agreement."I am devastated by your decision to let my rapist Jacob Walter Anderson go free without any punishment," the woman said."He is now free to roam society, stalk women and no one will know he is a sex offender. Jacob Anderson and all rapists who get away with their crimes will never be cured, never change. If anything they will be emboldened by their power over women and their ability to escape justice and punishment."Details of the alleged sexual assault were redacted from an arrest warrant affidavit. But shortly after Anderson was charged with sexual assault in 2016, a Waco police spokesman spelled out details from the police reports."The female said that she had been at a party at a fraternity in South Waco. She said she was handed a drink of some kind of punch and was told, 'Here you go. Drink this,' " Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said, according to a March 2016 story in the Waco Tribune-Herald."She said shortly after that she became very disoriented, was taken outside by our suspect, who is Jacob Walter Anderson, and she said when they got outside, Anderson forcibly sexually assaulted her."In her victim impact statement, the woman said Anderson "repeatedly raped me orally and (vaginally).""When he forcefully picked me up and shoved me into a wall to rape me vaginally from behind he calmly and coldly said, 'It's fine. You're fine.' When I tried to pull up my pants or sit he shoved me to the ground and shoved his penis back down my throat and continued to choke me," the woman said."When he forced me up again and started to rape me vaginally again I blacked out permanently. When I was completely unconscious he dumped me face down in the dirt and left me there to die. He had taken what he wanted, had proven his power over my body. He then walked home and went to bed without a second thought to the ravaged, half dead woman he had left behind."As he walked out of the courtroom Monday, Anderson declined to comment to the media.CNN reached out to Anderson's defense team and the victim's attorney Tuesday, but has not received responses. The McLennan County District Attorney's Office said the person handling all media inquiries, Rebecca Akins, is out sick Tuesday. The DA's office said no one else could help with media inquires.Assistant District Attorney Hilary LaBorde issued a statement Monday defending the plea agreement."As I did when this plea agreement was offered, I believe today's sentencing by Judge (Ralph) Strother was the best outcome given the facts of this case," LaBorde said, according to KWKT."Conflicting evidence and statements exist in this case, making the original allegation difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt. As a prosecutor, my goal is no more victims. I believe that is best accomplished when there is a consequence rather than an acquittal.""Given the claims made publicly, I understand why people are upset. However, all of the facts must be considered and there are many facts that the public does not have. In approving this agreement, Judge Strother had access to all the statements that have ever been made by all people involved and agreed that the plea agreement offered was appropriate in this case."The-CNN-Wire 4228

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV)- While many business owners were forced to make the painful decision to shut down during the pandemic, some still took the risk of opening for the first time.Samantha and Weston Nawrocki weren’t going to let the COVID-19 pandemic stop their goal of opening a new café locally.“For coffee, the great thing is most people treat it even non-pandemic as a to go item,” said Weston Nawrocki. The couple has a coffee shop and roasting location in Rancho Bernardo, but their new business is up and running in their own city, Escondido, just six blocks away from their home.Manzanita Roasting Company opened Friday inside The Grand, which is home to the historic Ritz Theater, now newly renovated.“I’ve been a resident since I was a kid,” said Samantha Nawrocki. “I always drove by and said ‘I wish something would go in there’ and now we’re in there.”The City of Escondido shut down a couple of lanes on Grand Avenue and helped businesses transition to provide outdoor services under the current COVID-19 restrictions. Now, more new businesses are opening on busy Grand Avenue.“We have Daydream, which is a lovely gift store, we also have Off The Grid Surplus, let’s say you’re an off-road enthusiast of the jeep crowd, that’s definitely going to be your place,” said Amber Tarrac, the Deputy Director of Economic Development for the City of Escondido. “We also have Good Omen Mead, a meadery which is amazing stuff to try.”Tony Pepperoni Pizzeria and Barrel republic are currently still under construction, but Tarrac said they should be opening on Grand Avenue sometime soon, although a specific date is not clear.“We’re really excited about them, they’ve been under construction for a while,” she said.Tarrac said it’s not just Grand Avenue doing well with new businesses; from March 1st through November 23rd, Tarrac said hundreds of new businesses opened across the city.“We’ve had 696 new businesses; these are new permanent, in city businesses,” she said. “The bulk of those businesses are actually home occupations, so we’ve had quite a few folks that have decided to become entrepreneurs and start different businesses out of their home. We also had a number of retailers and restaurants open up.”The Nawrocki’s say they were able to hire ten new employees right before the holidays. For them, it’s the positivity, help from the city, outpouring of local support, and the love of coffee that’s gotten them through this year.“I feel like there’s more people kind of walking around and excited to support small business,” said Samantha Nawrocki. “We come down here to grand avenue and support local businesses, so it’s really great to be a part of that.”Businesses in historic downtown Escondido will be participating in Small Business Saturday on the 28th, in an effort to get more people to shop local.Discounts and bonuses may be offered at some locations. The City of Escondido is helping small businesses with outdoor moves; to find out more, click here.Complimentary fencing is also available for businesses that want to move services outdoors. Tarrac said business owners can submit an order for a limited supply of fencing by emailing Business@Escondido.org 3195

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Surveillance video captured a man in a truck treating an Escondido neighborhood like a dumping ground. In the video, a white truck pulls up in the 800 block of North Citrus Avenue just before 1 p.m.  The driver goes to the back and casually pulls the couch onto the street, before going back to the truck to toss out a piece of carpet. He then drives off."Just makes our neighborhood look bad and ugly, and we don't want that," said Gil Gomez who lives feet from where the couch was dumped. His frustrations growing every time he watches the video, recorded from his Ring camera. That's because the truck appears to be a newer model Ford F-150."If you can afford to buy a brand new truck, you can afford to get rid of this thing properly," said Gomez.Gomez fears this type thing could attract more dumping."It might happen around the corner next time. That is the type of culture we cannot stand for," said Gomez.Gomez posted the video on the Neighbors by Ring app to track the person down and to send a message to would-be dumpers. "Not in our neighborhood. This is not that type of neighborhood," said Gomez. After 10News contacted Escondido's Public Works Department, the couch was picked up Tuesday afternoon. If you have any information on the case, call Escondido police at 760-839-4722. 1339
