The bill "gives people access to justice in a fair and impartial way."The bill would not prevent existing arbitration or nondisclosure agreements from being enforced.Republican Sen. Jeff Stone of Temecula, the only senator who spoke in opposition, called the bill "another job killer" that can drive companies out of California and mainly benefits trial lawyers by forcing more disputes into already overwhelmed courts.Most workers can often get a better and quicker resolution through arbitration than by filing a lawsuit, he said.That may be true for unionized employees whose unions can help choose arbitrators, said Democratic Sen. Connie Leyva of Chino, but she said companies have an unfair advantage over non-union employees because the employer then controls the arbitration process.The measure was approved by the state Senate, 25-12. It was one of a number of bills introduced after dozens of women went public with stories of sexual misconduct.Carlson, who spoke in favor of the bill in May, sued Fox News Channel CEO Roger Ailes in 2016, alleging she was fired for rejecting his sexual advances. Ailes, who died last year, said Carlson's contract prohibited her from going public until both sides first tried closed-door arbitration. RICHMOND, Va. — Crews have arrived to remove a statue of Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart from Richmond's Monument Avenue — an area of the city that contains several Confederate statues that Mayor Levar Stoney has promised to remove.The J.E.B. Stuart monument is one of about a dozen statues Stoney has ordered be removed from city property.Statues of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson and Confederate Naval Commander Matthew Fontaine Maury were removed from Monument Avenue last week and taken to an undisclosed location. A statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis was toppled by protesters last month.A statue to Confederate General Robert E. Lee is located on state-owned property and could be removed once legal challenges to its removal make their way through court.The Stuart statue, erected in 1907, is the first monument Stoney promised would be removed following the holiday weekend.The mayor said it would cost .8 million to remove the statues. He said the money would come from the Department of Public Works and be reimbursed by a private fund.While city attorney Haskell Brown told Richmond City Council that Stoney did not have the power to remove statues, Stoney said he believed he is on sound legal ground to remove the statues using his emergency powers as the Emergency Management Director."That's in our Emergency Operations Plan. Gavin Newsom has signed a law intended to counter Trump administration plans to increase oil and gas production on protected public land.The measure bars any California leasing authority from allowing pipelines or other oil and gas infrastructure to be built on state property. Newsom on Friday said he'll work with the Legislature to expand protections against evictions and expand workers compensation and paid sick leave. He enacted similar policies through executive order earlier this year but many expired or will soon. Latinos make up 39% of California’s population but 55% of confirmed positive coronavirus cases, according to state data.
