(KGTV) — Saturday, President Donald Trump signed a law approving the use of 9-8-8 as the universal telephone number to reach the National Suicide Prevention Hotline starting in 2022.The National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, which was passed by the U.S. House in September after being approved by the Senate and Federal Communications Commission, will allow individuals to dial the three digits 9-8-8 as opposed to the previous 10-digit hotline number, which is currently 1-800-273-8255 (TALK), CNN reported.The new number will take effect in July 2022.The bill allows states to collect fees aimed at ensuring local crisis centers can support increased volume and directs federal health agencies to submit a report to Congress on strategies to improve support services for LGBTQ youth, minorities, and individuals in rural counties, who are at a higher risk for suicide.In 2019, the FCC estimated that the costs of implementing a three-digit hotline for the first year would be about 0 million and 5 million in the second year, which includes costs for call-center capacity and public awareness campaign. (KGTV) - Sentencing will continue next week for the man convicted of killing his former business partner along with the man’s wife and two young sons. A San Bernardino County jury recommended the death penalty in June 2019 for Charles “Chase” Merritt. The recommendation came after Merritt was found guilty in the deaths of Joseph McStay, his wife Summer, and their two sons, Gianni and Joey Jr. A sentence was expected to be delivered Friday. The hearing will now resume on Tuesday.The family was last seen at a Fallbrook home in February 2010. Investigators had few leads in the case, at one point believing the McStays had crossed the border into Mexico voluntarily. Merritt alerted authorities to the disappearance and filed a missing persons report. During Friday's sentencing, Merritt tried to fire his attorney, Rajan Maline, after returning from the court's lunch break. The prosecution had yet to have the chance to argue against the motions before Merritt moved to fire Maline mid-trial. There is concern he could head back to the brig before his May 28th trial, even after the President intervened. Representative Duncan Hunter’s team was under the impression that his March 31 meeting with Chief Eddie Gallagher would have major consequences. "I am going to see why they are going to put him back in the brig if my staff goes and talks to Eddie Gallagher,” Representative Hunter said in a Twitter video. He told his followers he was going to meet with the Navy Liaison to get answers. Navy Commander Tamara Lawrence told 10News Gallagher now lives in another San Diego base, which they cannot disclose. She said his current pre-trial restrictions allow for "significant freedom of movement." Gallagher is allowed to walk anywhere inside the building and around the sidewalk. For anything outside that immediate area, he must be with an escort. She said Gallagher has unlimited access to his legal team and medical care. While he cannot have a cellphone or computer, he is allowed visitors and to make calls from a community phone.
