SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eve Ramirez made the difficult decision to close her City Heights taco shop when the coronavirus outbreak hit. She says she did it to protect her eight-month-old son. "I got scared to death," she said. "I was like, you know what, I had my baby boy in January, imagine something were to happen to me. I'm a single mom. I can't risk my baby's life. I immediately shut down without thinking twice."Ramirez, who owns Mexicali Street Tacos, is one of a large number of San Diegans now struggling to pay for basic necessities amid the pandemic. A San Diego Association of Governments study released Thursday says 71% of respondents reported not being able to pay for rent, food, and utilities, while two-thirds said the pandemic has negatively impacted their employment. Ramirez said she has received donated diapers from friends, is on Medi-Cal and is receiving government food allowances. "I had no choice but to apply for help," she said. More than 3,500 San Diego households responded to the survey, conducted via 23 community-based organizations. San Ysidro Health surveyed 300 families about the impact of the virus. Ana Melgoza, the organization's vice president of external affairs, says the virus has hit South Bay families particularly hard. She says many live in overcrowded homes due to high rent, and are forced to work in jobs that require interaction with the public such as in grocery stores and retail. "When you have people literally dying to go to work and provide for their families, we need to make sure health care is a priority for people so that when they do feel sick or are infected they have the right follow up care to manage and survive this deadly virus," Melgoza said. Melgoza said one potential solution is to provide hotel vouchers so people in overcrowded homes can quarantine safely. The study also says 60% of parents with school-aged children reported distance learning challenges during the school year. It calls for exploring new ways to provide direct monetary assistance to families in need, new partnerships between governments and community-based organizations, and new paid training and internship opportunities for underserved areas. 2201

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — FBI investigators are searching for a yellow Chevrolet Camaro in connection with an incident at a local park in May.Investigators say the individuals associated with the vehicle may have been a witness to the incident on May 31, 2020, at Kenmore Terrace Mini Park. The FBI did not elaborate on the incident.The Camaro is described as a two-door coupe with bright yellow paint and is believed to be a fifth-generation model year (2010-2015). In contrast to the yellow paint on the body of the Camaro, the hood, trunk, and spoiler are black. The vehicle also has a sunroof. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Despite criticism, a spokesperson for the California Republican Party told ABC 10News on Tuesday that the party will continue placing unofficial ballot drop boxes around communities.They've popped up in Orange, Los Angeles, and Fresno counties, but so far none have been reported in San Diego. Several have been labeled "official", as confirmed by CA GOP spokesperson Hector Barajas. “We could've had better wording on the ballot boxes and so we changed some of the wording around already on the ballot boxes but the important thing to remember is that these ballot boxes are inside our campaign headquarters or inside of businesses or other organizations. It's not as though they're outside in front of a mailbox or outside a library or a secondhand store or another place of business,” he told ABC 10News.On Monday, California's Secretary of State and the State Attorney General sent a cease and desist to the GOP, calling the boxes illegal. Some argue that the boxes are deceptive and could lead to tampering. “These boxes are not the same as county election drop boxes that are required to meet state security standards,” said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.Barajas told ABC 10News, “What is happening right now is the Secretary of State -- with this cease and desist -- is basically looking to engage in voter suppression [by] eliminating more options for individuals to be able to drop off their ballot.”Barajas said that "ballot harvesting" is a practice that allows a third party to collect voters' completed ballots and was legalized four years ago in a bill authored by San Diego Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez.A tweet Tuesday from one of Gonzalez’s accounts reads, "Apparently, Republicans in our legislature think that when I wrote that a voter could designate a 'person' to turn in their ballot, they thought I meant a fraudulently labeled box.
