SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego health officials are working with UCSD to notify people who may have been exposed to tuberculosis at the school’s La Jolla campus.According to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, the period of potential exposure was between January 25 through May 15. Those who are known to have been exposed were notified.“Testing is recommended for all those exposed to assure they are not infected, since they may not have symptoms,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. "For anyone infected, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent disease.”Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact. Most people who are exposed do not become infected.Symptoms of TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexpected weight loss.No-cost testing will be provided those identified starting May 30 at the campus Student Health Center on Library Walk. The number of annual cases of TB has decreased since the early 90s and has stabilized in recent years. So far in 2018, 64 cases have been reported. 1124
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Gas & Electric has warned about 2,700 customers in several East County communities of potential public safety power shutoffs starting Friday morning. The utility company said outages may occur due to a red flag warning issued by the National Weather Service and the need to reduce wildfire risk in the areas. The affected communities include:AlpineCampo ReservationCrestwoodDescansoJulianLa Posta ReservationManzanita ReservationPalaSanta YsabelSanta Ysabel ReservationValley CenterViejas Reservation"The last thing we want to be telling any of our customers right now is that we may have to shut off power given the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and the ongoing COVID pandemic," said SDG&E’s Chief Customer Officer Scott Crider. "Public Safety Power Shutoffs are a last resort to prevent wildfires, and our employees are dedicated to doing everything we can to minimize impacts should it come to that. We’re hoping Mother Nature cooperates, but in an abundance of caution we have reached out to our customers so they can be prepared."SDG&E says several hundred linemen, troubleshooters, and support personnel will be working on Thanksgiving Day and through the holiday weekend to monitor the grid. The red flag warning will be in effect from 9 p.m. Thursday through 9 a.m. Saturday for San Diego County's inland valleys and mountains. Moderate strength Santa Ana winds are expected in areas of the backcountry. The strongest winds are forecasted to arrive on Friday. To see what communities may be impacted by any public safety outages, SDG&E has a list online. 1611

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans played the role of Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturday as they delivered some holiday cheer to seniors in need downtown.Volunteers from the non-profits Serving Seniors and Friends of Downtown teamed up to deliver bags filled with essentials to seniors. Bags were filled with items including food, blankets, fresh towels, and other care products.Organizers of the event say that the seniors they serve don't have families or anyone to visit them and, in some cases, this is the only present they receive during the holidays."Serving seniors sent us pictures last year and we got to see seniors receiving them and it brought tears to your eyes," Lori Carpenter, with Friends of Downtown, said.More than 200 bags were handed out during Saturday's event. 786

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego photographers are taking advantage of the serene and luminous glow of the surf this week.Eerie neon blue waves have been seen against San Diego's shore this week, creating some rare photo opportunities for locals. The phenomenon is created when a red tide, which is algae bloom filled with phytoplankton called "dinoflagellates," rolls off waves onto or near the shoreline. The organisms react with a bioluminescent chemical reaction when jostled as a way to warn predators, to lure prey, or communicate within their species. The blue glow can be created by a simple step in the water or crash of a wave.IN SAN DIEGO...The current red tide is being caused by massive numbers of dinoflagellates including "Ceratium falcatiforme" and "Lingulodinium polyedra," according to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.Researchers do not know how long this current red tide will last or "the full spatial range of the bloom." In the past, blooms have lasted anywhere from a week to a month or more.RELATED: 1110
