SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up to walk in the annual Friendship Walk at Liberty Station on Sunday. This year, the walk was also in honor of Lori Kaye, the only fatal victim in the Poway Synagogue shooting in April. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Major changes are proposed to an exemption in state law that allows for a person under 21 to buy an assault-style rifle with a state-issued hunting license. The senator pushing behind the legislation also says he could author bring about more changes next year, including addressing an issue 10News uncovered in the wake of the Poway synagogue shooting in April. On Jan. 1, the state of California raised the legal age to buy all firearms - including long-guns - to 21. There were, however, exceptions for those over 18 who are military, law enforcement, or possess a valid, state-issued hunting license. Accused Poway synagogue shooter John Earnest, 19, purchased an AR-15 style weapon from a dealer in San Diego. State Sen. Anthony Portantino, a Democrat from the Los Angeles area, has amended current legislation, Senate Bill 61, to eliminate the hunting license exemption for "semiautomatic center-fire" rifles for those under 21."This is the weapon of choice that is finding itself into the wrong hands and, frankly, killing children,” Portantino said in an interview. "From our perspective we want to make sure we have a bill that gets signed into law that solves a problem.” Gov. Gavin Newsom has expressed support for this change.Portantino also said he would continue to seek out changes during next year's legislative. That includes potentially installing better verification practices when it comes to exemptions. That's because Earnest, a college student, did not have a valid hunting license when he purchased the firearm allegedly used in the attack, Fish and Wildlife has confirmed. 10News reported that under current law, the Justice Department leaves the responsibility to individual gun shops to verify hunting licenses. It does not verify them again with state Fish and Wildlife during the 10-day mandatory background check. Portantino said this is on his radar for the 2020 session. "This issue certainly highlights these legitimate questions," he said. "So yes that’s one of the things we’re looking into for next year is ensuring that when you collect data you want to make sure it’s used for the right purpose. We're definitely looking to make that system better without a doubt."The gun dealer, San Diego Guns, has insisted it did everything properly in the transaction. Earnest is accused of fatally shooting Chabad of Poway congregant Lori Kaye and injuring three others on April 27. He is now facing more than 100 federal hate crime charges. 2496

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local, independently owned grocery stores are keeping an eye on a potential grocery worker strike in Southern California. On Monday, UFCW Local 135 will vote to authorize strikes at Albertsons, Vons and Ralphs. Union representatives say employees have been working without a contract since March. Union president, Todd Walters, says they've met 17 times with the companies asking for better wages, health benefits and pensions. In South Park, the owner of a small grocery store says he hopes the bigger retailers don't enter a strike. David Halabo owns Food Bowl Market with his wife. During the last strike in 2003, Halabo says his business saw an increase in customers for specific items like bread, milk and eggs. Halabo says he's keeping an eye on the negotiations, but says he'll only stock up on extra items if the workers do go on strike. The small business owner says, although is business would benefit, he doesn't want to see a strike happen.Ralphs spokesperson John Votava sent 10News a statement from the company, saying:"We are negotiating in good faith with the union for a fair and balanced contract that is good for our associates, as well as our company. As you know, negotiations are about finding compromise, and this can take time. Throughout the negotiations, it's business as usual in our stores and Ralphs is extremely proud of our associates who remain focused on serving our customers, communities and each other."Vons/Albertson's spokesperson Melissa Hill sent this statement as well, saying:"We are committed to working collaboratively with the unions to ensure that we reach an agreement that is fair to our employees, good for our customers and allows Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions to remain competitive in the Southern California market. We feel the strike authorization vote is premature and will cause our employees and customers undue concern; nevertheless, we will be back at the bargaining table on July 10 and hope to reach an agreement soon."The vote doesn't mean employees will go on strike immediately, but it does give the union the ability to call for one at any time. Grocery workers will have three opportunities to vote on Monday, at 9 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 6 p.m. 2237

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of a City Heights man and longtime professional wrestler to COVID-19.In the wrestling ring, Martin Rodriguez was known as "Espantito," or "The Terror." He donned a mask and black-and-white tights and had a knack for performing seamless moves. In early September, the man known for his strength felt tired and then developed a cough and fever. A few weeks later, he was having trouble breathing and was taken to the ER."He went in with pneumonia and was then diagnosed with COVID-19," said his daughter Barbara Rodriguez.Barbara says a few days later, he was placed on a ventilator. About three weeks later, Martin, a husband and father of two, died at the age of 53."He gave me strength, gave me guidance, and helped me become the person I am today. Knowing I won't have him for the future is painful," said Barbara. The man she knew as her loving, caring father stood in contrast to the character inside the ring. After several years in Mexico's famed AAA Lucha Libre in the early 90s, Rodriguez moved to San Diego and became a freelancer, wrestling in leagues in Southern California, Canada, and Mexico. He was always the bad guy and he loved it."Hyped him up even more. He loved entertaining people, making them laugh and feeling emotion," said Barbara.Since the pandemic began, his matches had been canceled. He owns a landscaping business and was taking all the COVID-19 precautions. Barbara doesn't know how he contracted the virus."I just want people to be safe. Wear a mask. I don't want this to happen to any other families," said Barbara.A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1675
