ROME, May 26 (Xinhua) -- African swine fever, a viral disease deadly to pigs but harmless to human beings, is spreading beyond Russia and the Caucasus region into Europe, the United Nations' food agency said Thursday."African swine fever is fast becoming a global issue," said Juan Lubroth, chief veterinary officer for the Food and Agriculture Organization."It now poses an immediate threat to Europe and beyond. Countries need to be on the alert and to strengthen their preparedness and contingency plans," he said.The disease, for which there is currently no vaccine, was introduced into Georgia from southern Africa late in 2006. It entered through the Black Sea port of Poti, where garbage from a ship was taken to a dump where pigs came to feed, the FAO said.Strategies to tackle African swine fever include quarantine, on-farm security and other measures aimed at minimizing the risk of introduction and establishing of the disease.

Google chairman Eric Schmidt has promised that the firm will simplify the process by which Android phone users agree to share their data.It follows questions in the US Senate about how much location information is stored by mobile handsets.Speaking in the UK at a conference on privacy, he also revealed that Google plans to offer web users more control over their online profile.Mr Schmidt insisted that the company took the matter "very seriously".He told attendees at the Big Tent debate in Hertfordshire that his firm was working on "a series of projects" aimed at increasing transparency.Those include a revised Google Dashboard, where users can see what data they have shared with the search giant."It is worth stressing that we can only do this with data you have shared with Google. SAN FRANCISCO, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Computer networking equipment giant Cisco Systems Inc. on Tuesday announced the intent to buy privately-held software company newScale Inc., in a move to complement and expand its offerings in cloud computing.Based in San Mateo in the U.S. state of California, newScale provides software that delivers a service catalog and self-service portal for information technology (IT) organizations to select and quickly deploy cloud services within their businesses.Founded in 1999, the company now has more than two million users worldwide, including 20 percent of the Fortune 50 companies, according to information posted on newScale's website."With the acquisition of newScale, Cisco will be able to accelerate the deployment of cloud services through a service catalog and self-service portal that allows customers to easily manage their IT infrastructures," Parvesh Sethi, Cisco's senior vice president, noted in a statement.Cisco said it expects to close the deal in the second half of its fiscal year 2011, without disclosing financial terms.

BRASILIA, March 15 (Xinhua) -- A nationwide program aimed at providing internet access to 80 percent of the country's population by 2014 is forging ahead in Brazil, Communications Minister Paulo Bernardo said on Tuesday.The National Broadband Plan (PNBL), with participation of 13 ministries, is coordinated by Bernardo, who explained details about the project on Tuesday along with Joao Santana, president of Telebras, the state-owned enterprise responsible for managing the project.The authorities have criticized companies that offer internet service for failing to spread internet use in Brazil, offering an expensive service with prices amounting to about 50 U.S. dollars monthly, inaccessible to low-income families."We ended 2010 with 34 percent of Brazilian households with Internet access, and service is also very poor. Almost half of connections are of 256 mbps. We are out-of-date, with the aggravating circumstance that the connections are very expensive," Bernardo said.To speed up the process, the government started negotiating with concessionaire phone companies to improve the service quality and lower the price to about 30 reais (18 dollars), which would allow 80 percent of the population to access internet."During (former president) Lula da Silva's government, we developed a program to interconnect all schools with internet access, but we also want the private sector to do its share," he said.
