LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who said he was shot in a station parking lot was lying.Assistant Sheriff Robin Limon said at a news conference late Saturday that Wednesday's "reported sniper assault was fabricated" by Angel Reinosa, a 21-year-old deputy.A department statement on Thursday had said a round hit the top of Reinosa's shoulder, damaging his uniform shirt but failing to penetrate his flesh.But Sheriff's Capt. Kent Wegener says no bullets were recovered from the scene and detectives saw "no visible injuries." He says Reinosa eventually admitted making up the story and using a knife to cut the two holes in his shirt.Reinosa has been relieved of his duties and will face a criminal investigation. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Three men were named Wednesday in a Los Angeles federal grand jury indictment that alleges they distributed narcotics, including counterfeit pharmaceutical pills containing fentanyl, that resulted in the overdose death of hip-hop artist Mac Miller.Cameron James Pettit, 28, of West Hollywood; Stephen Andrew Walter, 46, of Westwood; and Ryan Michael Reavis, 36, a former West Los Angeles resident who relocated to Lake Havasu, Arizona, earlier this year, are charged with conspiring to distribute controlled substances resulting in death and distribution of fentanyl resulting in death.Each of those counts carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in federal prison and a potential sentence of life without parole, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Walter alone is additonally charged with being a felon in possession of ammunition, which, if he were to be convicted, would result in a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison.Court documents allege the three defendants distributed narcotics to 26-year-old Malcolm James McCormick -- who recorded and performed under the name Mac Miller -- two days before the entertainer suffered a fatal drug overdose in Studio City on Sept. 7, 2018.The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner later determined that Miller died of mixed drug toxicity involving fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol.According to the indictment, late on the night of Sept. 4, Pettit agreed to supply the rapper with 10 ``blues'' -- a street term for oxycodone pills -- as well as cocaine and the sedative Xanax. But instead of providing Miller with genuine oxycodone when he made the delivery during the early morning hours of Sept. 5, Pettit provided counterfeit oxycodone pills that contained fentanyl -- a powerful synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin, according to the indictment.The indictment alleges that Pettit ordered the fentanyl-laced pills from Walter, and then Reavis delivered the narcotics to Pettit. Investigators believe that Miller died after snorting the counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl allegedly provided by Pettit. While another individual supplied Miller with other drugs prior to his death, those narcotics did not contain fentanyl, prosecutors said.Less than one month after Miller's death, Walter agreed to sell Pettit another 10 blues, according to the indictment, which also alleges other drug deals between the two men, with one as recent as Aug. 30. The indictment further alleges that Reavis was involved in drug trafficking activities in June and quotes a text message he sent after realizing he was negotiating a narcotics transaction with an unknown person that reads, in part: ``People have been dying from fake blues left and right, you better believe law enforcement is using informants and undercover to buy them on the street ... they can start putting (people) in prison for life for selling fake pills.''U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna said it has become ``increasingly common for us to see drug dealers peddling counterfeit pharmaceuticals made with fentanyl. As a consequence, fentanyl is now the number one cause of overdose deaths in the United States.''Hanna alleged that the three defendants continued to sell narcotics after Miller's death, ``with full knowledge of the risks their products posed to human life.''Special Agent in Charge William D. LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s Republican Party has acknowledged owning unofficial ballot drop boxes that state election officials say aren’t allowed. California election officials received reports about the boxes in Fresno, Los Angeles and Orange counties. On Sunday, the secretary of state issued a memo telling county registrars the boxes are illegal and ballots must be mailed or brought to official voting locations. State GOP spokesman Hector Barajas said Monday the party owns the boxes. He declined to say how many exist and where they are located. Barajas said the state’s law governing so-called ballot harvesting allows an organization to collect and return groups of ballots. He said the GOP’s boxes are no different than methods use by Democrats to ensure ballots get returned.Neal Kelley, the Orange County's registrar of voters, said official drop boxes are clearly recognizable and carry the official county elections logo. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A pair of active-duty U.S. Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton were arrested Tuesday morning on a federal grand jury indictment charging one of the Marines and three civilians with conspiring to distribute narcotics -- including oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl -- to civilians and members of the Marine Corps, one of whom suffered a fatal drug overdose in May.Lance Cpls. Anthony Ruben Whisenant, 20, and Ryan Douglas White, 22, were expected to make their initial appearances Tuesday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities are seeking to dismiss roughly 2 million old minor warrants and citations in the hopes of easing legal burdens on the Los Angeles homeless population.The offices of the Los Angeles district attorney, city attorney and police chief announced the filing of the motions Wednesday, saying they are seeking to reduce the court’s backlog and focus on serious offenses.Homelessness rose 16% in LA over the past year, to more than 36,000 people, according to a June report by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.The city and district attorneys are also seeking to dismiss old fines and fees for minor violations.Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore told The Associated Press in July that he considered homelessness to be a “humanitarian crisis of our generation.” 803
