SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans may start to feel meaningful relief from the housing crisis within 10 years, state Assemblyman Todd Gloria said Thursday.Speaking to 10News before a forum on how to create housing for the middle class, Gloria said a series of new laws going into effect Jan. 1, and other efforts, could help bring relief to rising rents and home prices. “I think it’s reasonable within the decade to see change on this, this problem has become so acute that people really are demanding solutions,” Gloria said. “I think a lot of my colleagues in the legislature also understand that they have to do something. What’s been done in recent history is not working.”Gloria pointed to Governor-elect Gavin Newsom’s platform of radically increasing the amount of housing production in California. Gloria said he wants to pursue relaunching the state's redevelopment program, which paves the way for affordable housing.He said a series of new laws will also take effect Jan. 1, including one that provides financial incentives to developers who build housing for middle-income earners near transit centers. "You can pay your fees on a square footage basis rather than a per unit basis, that should result in some savings, and if done correclty at the right price points there can actually be less parking, which also saves costs,” Gloria said.Still, there is a long way to go. The average rent in the county is now about ,850 a month, and the median home price up to 0,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ring video captured a man leaping into action, after an incident at a neighbor's Mira Mesa home.Just off Parkdale Avenue, Rod Hutty ran to the front yard in his sandals and saw some frantic neighbors last Wednesday afternoon."I heard a scream and two women came out. One had a stick and shouted, 'Stop,'" said Hutty. Video shows what happened next. Hutty says he spotted a man in his early 20s, who started running."My adrenaline kicked in. I knew something was wrong. I shouted at him," said Hutty.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodHutty gave chase. He saw another man running in a different direction, causing Hutty to go after him. What isn't seen on camera is Hutty catching up to him."I went like this and he went like this, and grabbed him and almost took him to the ground. Then he got away," said Hutty.Hutty chased them for a bit, before heading back to get his bike. He never saw them again. Witnesses spotted a blue minivan picking up the two men. Hutty later got a visit from the Eggum family, receiving a big "thank you." Hutty's cousin placed the video on the Neighbors by Ring app."Did the best he could ... appreciate neighbors helping out," said Gordon Eggum.Eggum says his wife saw the two men lurking in the backyard after hopping the fence. "I was amazed it was going for that much money," said Joe Moreno, who lives nearby. "Does it have plumbing? I mean, does it have facilities?"The answer is yes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ricardo Silva, a Chula Vista native, has it in his blood to both serve his country and join the medical field.He had multiple family members join the military and as a San Diego local, he grew up around the Navy, so he became a sailor about ten years ago. Growing up with a mother who was a nurse, it makes sense that he and his sister followed her lead. His sister now works for the Public Health Department and he’s working at Naval Hospital Bremerton in Washington with the preventative medicine team as a contact tracer for COVID-19 patients.He and his team have worked days as long as 18 hours since the start of the pandemic, figuring out where patients contracted the virus.“It’s very very detailed, trying to figure out where they got it and how to try to prevent that from happening for the next person,” he said.Naval Hospital Bremerton has screened more than 35,000 patients as of July 30.“As I do this work, as tough as it is, when this is all over I just want to be able to say I did my part to help get through this,” he said. 1067
