TIANJIN, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A subway train of six cars being assembled rolled off a production line Friday at a production base in north China's Tianjin Municipality, according to China South Locomotive & Rolling Stock Corporation (CSR).The subway train is the first of the kind ever produced at the CSR Tianjin Industrial Park, said CSR's chairman, Zhao Xiaogang.The train, designed to run at a speed of 80 km per hour, has a holding capacity of 1,800 passengers. It will will be used in Tianjin's Subway Line 3, which will begin service in 2011.The production base, with an initial investment of 3 billion yuan (455 million U.S. dollars), can produce 100 to 200 trains a year. It will attain a capacity of producing 500 trains annually in the next five years, according to Zhao.Analysts say the base's first product marked Tianjin's efforts to encourage the development of modern and more advanced industries in the city.The production base will boost the development of emerging industries in Tianjin and contribute to China's economic transformation, Zhao said.CSR, a state-owned company with more than 80,000 employees, produces about 70 percent of all high-speed trains China.
GUANGZHOU, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- China will increasingly promote the use of clean energy, since the country's energy needs are expected to increase by an equivalent of 2 billion tonnes of coal in the next decade, said Dai Yande, an official of the National Development and Reform Commission Tuesday during the 2010 Asia Energy Forum in Guangzhou City."China will use the lever of price to increase the demand for new energy," Dai said, "We will increase the share of non-fossil fuels in energy consumption to 15 percent by 2020.""We will increase the installed capacity of nuclear power to 80 million kilowatts and hydroelectric power to 400 million kilowatts by the end of 2020," Dai added.Further, China's major export hub Guangdong Province will invest 10 billion yuan (1.5 billion U. S. dollars) in green energy development in the next five years, said Li Chunhong, an official from the local government of Guangdong.By 2010, the capacity of nuclear power in Guangdong will reach 24 million kilowatts, and new energy will account for 30 percent of the total energy consumed, Li said.Opened on Dec. 13 in Guangzhou City, capitial of Guangdong Province in south China, the two-day forum provides a platform for experts and officials from around Asia to discuss regional cooperation in developing green energy.The first Asia Energy Forum was successfully held in Guangzhou in August 2009, and the forum is to be held annually in Guangzhou.
BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's welfare lottery has raised over seven billion yuan (about 1 billion U.S. dollar) for the country' s quake-stricken area in its southwest since 2008.The preliminary count was announced by China's Welfare Lottery Distribution and Management Center on Monday, a few weeks before the deadline for the fund-raising project.The project was initiated shortly after an 8.0 magnitude earthquake devastated China's southwestern region in May 2008, which left more than 87,000 people dead or missing.Designed to last for a 30-month period starting on July 1, 2008, the special fund-raising project will conclude on the last day of this month.This was the second major fund-raising effort dedicated for relief work following natural disasters.The first one was initiated after disastrous floods along the Yangtze, China' s longest river, in 1998. About 1.5 billion yuan was raised then.China's welfare lottery started in 1987.
