XUZHOU, Jiangsu, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao congratulates Sunday on the 100th founding anniversary of the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) in a letter, urging more talents in the country's energy resource industries.     Hu said in the letter that energy resources are the basis and guarantee of the country's economic and social development.     As a key base for the country's education on the science and technology of energy resources, the university shoulders great responsibilities and has a bright future, Hu said. Hu called upon the university to stick to the Scientific Outlook on Development and foster more talents to achieve more research fruits and contribute to the sound and fast development of the country.     In his reply to a letter from the university's new graduates who are working in the country's western regions, Premier Wen Jiabao encouraged them to devote themselves to the development of the regions where they work.     State Councilor Liu Yandong Sunday attended the celebration that marked the university's founding anniversary. She noted that the scientific exploitation and clean use of energy resources is a major issue for countries across the world and is also a key factor that is restricting China's modernization.     She called on teachers and students to attach individual values to the country's construction and go to the places where they are most needed.     The CUMT, one of the key national universities under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education, is based in Xuzhou of east China's Jiangsu Province.     In 1997, the university's second campus was established in Beijing.

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to advance cooperation with Turkey in combating terrorism to better fulfill the common task of safeguarding national unification and territorial integrity and opposing separatism, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Sunday.     Yang made the remarks when meeting in Beijing with Turkish State Minister Zafer Caglayan, who paid the visit to China as special envoy of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The visit "indicated Turkey's political will to further its relationship with China," Yang said during the one-hour meeting, adding China attached great importance to promoting the ties with Turkey.     China was ready to strengthen the bilateral relations on the basis of universally recognized norms of international relations, he said. It had a profound political background.     The riot, taking place on July 5 in capital of the northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left 197 people dead and more than 1,600 others injured.     Yang said the "East Turkestan" separatist forces' nature and harm was disclosed in the riot as it seriously jeopardized the lives, property of the Chinese people of various ethnic groups, and the local stability.     The measures taken by the Chinese government to deal with the incident according to law won wholehearted support of the local people of all ethnic groups, Yang said.     Caglayan reiterated Turkey's adherence to the one-China policy and its respect for China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.     The two peoples had a long history of friendship, and the two countries enjoyed "sound cooperation" in areas such as fighting terrorism, Caglayan said, adding Turkey would like to keep close contact with China in this area.     "Turkey will endeavor to develop a strong relationship with China, through deepening bilateral cooperation," he said.     Caglayan, who arrived in Beijing Saturday, also said the success of Turkish President Abdullah Gul's visit to China in June had exerted profound influence on the bilateral relations.     During his four-day stay in China, Caglayan was also scheduled to meet Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and visit Xinjiang, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry.

URUMQI, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Diplomatic envoys from 26 countries and regions in China began a five-day visit to northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Monday, about a month after the deadly riot in the regional capital of Urumqi.     At the invitation of the autonomous regional government, they are expected to -- through the visit -- acquire a better understanding of Xinjiang's development over the past several decades in various respects, including its politics, economy, ethnic and religious policies, preservation of cultural relics and the livelihood of local residents. "Violence is not allowed in any sovereignty and law-ruled nation." 

WASHINGTON, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Holding an umber basketball in his hand, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan became the center of attention at the end of the first round of the China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue on Tuesday. The basketball, with Barack Obama's autograph, is a gift from the U.S. president to Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan who is the co-host of the "Economic Track" of the dialogue.     The basketball is considered a symbol of the U.S. government's hospitality and gratitude to Chinese officials for their efforts in making this dialogue a success. BUDAPEST, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai has expressed optimism in having a better future in ties with China upon the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Bajnai described China as a reliable international partner in a recent interview with Xinhua, saying that Hungary was one of the first to establish diplomatic ties with the fledgling country.     Having visited China in November 2008, he said he has been deeply impressed with the country's dynamic development.     "The high-standard professional exchange of views with Chinese negotiation partners in the central and local governments and withbusiness leaders have already yielded concrete results in the Hungarian-Chinese economic relations, to the benefit of both countries," said the prime minister.     He welcomed the forthcoming visit of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, saying the visit will offer an opportunity for the two sides to talk about "further significant advances in bilateral economic cooperation."     The past decade has witnessed a 17-fold rise in trade between Hungary and China, he said, adding that there had also been extensive growth in their cultural, educational, scientific and tourism cooperation.     Noting that China is one of Hungary's most significant Asian trade partners and Hungary one of China's most prominent in central and eastern Europe, Bajnai said further improvement of the relations with China has been a priority of the Hungarian foreign policy.     "Mutual investment and technological cooperation are important not only because they are profitable for businesses of both countries, but also because in hard economic times they create jobs, " he said.     He noted that China has been doing a splendid job in facing up to the challenges of the world economic depression. Hungary also did everything in its power to alleviate its impact, he said.     Both countries should "take full advantage of their cooperation in continuing to combat the crisis," he said.     Referring to the 60 years China has gone through, Bajnai said China's development, especially in the past three decades, has set an example for the world.     "My personal opinion is that China's greatest achievement has been its huge economic advances, which made it possible to significantly raise the living standards of the 1.3 billion Chinese people," he said.
